Ashramam maidan witnessed a historic and glamorous night in Kollam's history

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan inaugurated The Raviz, a five-star hotel with seven-star facilities, on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake in Kollam at a function on Friday evening.

In his inaugural address, Shahrukh Khan said the inauguration of the hotel marked a step forward to make Kollam a tourism hot spot of the globe.

The world deserves to see such a wonderful place, he said. The hotel will showcase the attractions of Kollam.

Shahrukh Khan said whenever he visited Kerala, he had a wonderful time and thrilling moments. In a lighter vein, he said in Kochi he did not have a good time as his cricket team was beaten by the Kochi Tuskers in the IPL edition. “Next time, my team will defeat the Tuskers,” he said.

The Bollywood star it would be a pleasure to do a film in Kollam. “I will definitely come here with my family.”

While dedicating The Raviz property, Union Minister for Tourism Subodh Kant Sahay announced that his Ministry would allocate Rs. 25 lakh for the President's Trophy boat race, to held on the Ashtamudi Lake on August 30.

President Pratibha Patil's visit to Kollam on August 30 would give a boost to promoting Kollam as a tourist destination, he said.

Mr. Sahay said efforts would be taken to ensure that at least half the number of foreign tourists who arrive in the country would visit Kerala too. He called upon the State government to plan its tourism projects accordingly.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the function. Union Minister for Civil Aviation Vayalar Ravi delivered the keynote address.

The logo of the hotel was launched by actor Mohanlal. Kollam MP Peethambara Kurup welcomed the gathering and Chairman and Managing Director of the hotel B. Ravi Pillai proposed a vote of thanks.

Gained tips on acting from Mammooty & Mohan Lal - Sharukh khan

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan has said that the cause behind the agitation launched by Anna Hazare is so fantastic that it is beyond his capacity to comment.

He was addressing a press conference here on Friday. He arrived here to inaugurate a five star hotel, The Raviz.

Mr. Khan said that everyone would agree that there should be no corruption in the country. “Corruption is the worst stigma a country can have. Corruption in the country has become so huge that we all support anti-corruption movements. But then there are so many aspects to it. It involves even Constitutional aspects. Now that the movement is on the streets we should ensure that it does not die.”

He said more than getting involved in any kind of activism, Bollywood and the film industry of the country should involve in entertainment. “Entertainment should be looked upon as enrichment of the mind. Therefore, one needs to entertain people in all possible ways.”

He said the most accomplished and finest film-makers in the country were in the Malayalam film industry. “There is no better film-making State in this country than Kerala.” Actors Mammootty and Mohanlal had given him some fine tips on good acting and he gained a lot through that, Mr. Khan said.

He disagreed to the notion that Bollywood alone represented the Indian film industry abroad. “We speak of producing 900 films in the country annually and not just 200 Hindi films.”

Mr. Khan said that recently he visited Japan and he was tremendously moved to see “people of that country going gaga over Rajinikant Sir.

President's Trophy Boat Race: President to arrive in Kollam on Monday

President's Trophy will be formally brought here tomorrow from the Rashtrapathi Bhavan

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will arrive here on August 29 for a three-day visit to witness the maiden President's Trophy Boat Race to be held on August 30 on the Ashtamudi Lake.

District Collector P.G. Thomas said here on Thursday that the President would arrive at the Asramam helipad at 5.15 p.m. from Thiruvananthapuram.

Kollam Mayor Prasanna Earnest had called on the President at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday and formally invited her to witness the boat race. During the meeting, the Mayor presented a memento to the President on behalf of the people of Kollam city. Deputy Mayor G. Lalu accompanied the Mayor.

On her arrival in Kollam, the President will be formally received at the helipad by Ms. Earnest, N. Peethambara Kurup, MP, Ministers from the district, and the District Collector.

Mr. Thomas said the President would then move by road to ‘The Raviz' where she would stay with her immediate entourage. The Collector said 54 rooms had been booked in the hotel for the purpose.

The President has no engagements on the first day of her arrival. On August 30 morning, the President will leave for Kottayam to address a function there. She will return to Kollam in the afternoon and witness the final of the boat race from the VVIP pavilion close to the finishing point near the KSRTC depot. The President will be at the boat race venue for an hour. She will stay back for the night here and will leave for Thiruvananthapuram by helicopter the next day morning.

The President's Trophy to be given to the winning team will be formally brought here on August 27 from the Rashtrapathi Bhavan by President's secretary Christy Fernandez.

The trophy will be taken around the district in a cultural rally for two days. The rally will begin from Ochira on August 28.

Ashtamudi means eight locks of hair and it symbolises the eight creeks of Ashtamudi Lake. In order to lend colour to the boat race, a fleet of ornamental boats will set sail from each creek on August 28 and will arrive at the boat race course by 4 p.m. The eight creeks are at Thevally, Kandachira, Kureepuzha, Thekkumbhagam, Kallada, Perumon, Kumbalam, and Kanjiracode.

As a prelude to the race, a banana boat ride will be held at the race course on August 28 and 29. These are inflatable boats in the shape of a banana hauled by a motor boat. Adventure riders sit on top of the inflatable boats and sail through the waters experiencing a speed boat effect.

The programme is being organised jointly by Goa-based National Institute of Water Sports and Delhi-based Annals Sports and Leisure Management (ASLM) India Limited. ASLM director Abdulla Maliekkal said the programme was being organised both as a promotion exercise for the boat race and to attract younger generation to water sports.

Curator inspects Kollam Museum works

National Museum, New Delhi, Curator Vijay Kumar Mathur, on Saturday, assessed the preliminary work on the People's Museum being set up in the city.

The museum is among the projects proposed to be implemented using proceeds of the Kollam Fest which will begin here on November 1.

Mayor Prasanna Earnest had called on National Museum Director-General C.V. Ananda Bose in New Delhi recently and discussed the project.

Mr. Bose, who had served as District Collector in Kollam years ago, had reportedly evinced keen interest, provided the civic body found land and buildings for it.

Ms. Earnest said a colonial building near the SMP Palace had been earmarked and the same was inspected by Dr. Mathur.
