GOTHENBURG | Centrala Alvstaden Megathread

Älvstaden/River city is a large sustainable project to be developed in the central area of Gothenburg (the second largest city in Sweden). The main task of this project is to develop a new and exciting city center of Gothenburg by urbanising and converting the harbour area into dynamic and livable public space where the industrial hystory might meet the high-technology future of the city.
Considerable development is already in progress and it is already built up in large parts (namelly: the Southern (Södra) and Northern (Norra) parts of 'Älvstaden'; please, see the map below). However the most exciting and the largest part of the project is set to be 'Centrala Älvstaden'.
In order to achieve a strategic grasp and a shared view of the development that will take place, a vision and a strategy are being prepared.

Vision and strategies

The mandate concerning the development of RiverCity Gothenburg derives from the City Executive Board and includes:
  • Vision and strategy seen from perspective of the city as a whole, based on working out an approach to the social, ecological and economic dimensions of the challenge;
  • Dialogue, characterised by openness with the community of Göteborg;
  • Active contribution to a national and international exchange of experience;
  • A symbol for interdisciplinary interaction and collaboration.
  • The work of drawing up a vision and strategy takes place partly through Citizens’ Dialogues and through workshops.

Ideas from around the world - RiverCity becomes arena for International Workshop

The results from the Workshop will play a key role in developing and expanding the city’s central area to embrace both sides of the river. Those wishing to participate have 40 days to put together a team and appropriate material that will enable assessment of the teams hoping to attend the Workshop. In April, the assessment group starts work on selecting the participating teams. It is expected there will be a total of about 100 contributors at the Workshop which takes place during the period 7-11 June.

Proposal: 'Viking Green City' by Håkan Cullberg

Probably, the best known proposal till now is 'Viking Green City' which has been created and presented to the public earlier by the Swedish architect Håkan Cullberg. The architect sees the center of the city of Gothenburg as a dynamic space where a cluster of differently sized buildings is formed. The main symbol of a new city center may be a new 'Viking museum', which would be placed on a platform on the water. The project in short:

Country: Sweden;
Place: Göteborg (Gothenburg), Frihamnen;
Name of the project: 'Viking green city';
Architect: Håkan Cullberg;
Purpose: the conversion of the harbour area Frihamnen; a formation of a new, diverse, city center of Gothenburg as a part of the large sustainable development 'Älvstaden';
Internals: the average height of the buildings would be 200 m. (according to a primary suggestion); all the buildings are supposed to be environment-friendly;
Status: vision (proposed);
Price: -;
Begining of contruction: -;
End of construction: -;
More information: www.cullberg.se, www.vikinggreen.se.

There are two versions of the proposal:

1) a primary proposal with the normal height of the buildings:

2) a proposal with the reduced height of the higher buildings:

Please note that the folowing visions are volume study; the design of the buildings is not detailed yet.

but where would all the people come from? is the city growing that much? btw i love it too, wish something like that gets realized soon in switzerland too, but we rather like to stick with our little and boring architecture and urban planing. if you would propose something like this lets say for zurich, everyone would laugth at you or even get totally serously angry and say its totally out of place and think your mentally ill.

This looks beyond sweet like something out of China or Dubai.. seriously owns the Fjord-city project in Oslo.

I hope Viking Green City will be built!

Well, if there won't be any better projects presented by foreign architects, probably, 'Viking Green City' will be the future landmark of Gothenburg.

It is a great project for sure. Maybe it will be a great start of a new tendency in the architecture of Sweden and whole Scandinavia.

Well, you used to have much different system in Zurich, where high-rises above 40 meters weren't allowed. Your city broke this rule 2 years ago, so this is why they can build the 124 m high Prime Tower there now. Since Zurich is an important financial center in Europe I'm pretty sure there will be more skyscrapers under construction soon. It is inevitable in our modern world.

As for Gothenburg and other Swedish cities, I hope that we'll break out of our corrupt political system when it comes to urban planning soon aswell.

It's NIMBY'ism that usually destroys most of the urban plans. However the tendency is changing and there are more and more highrises approved both in Sweden and whole the region.

Adjacent project: renewal of arena 'Scandinavium'

Scandinavium is the primary indoor sports and event arena in Gothenburg, Sweden, which has been opened in 1971. It has been selected as a championship arena at least fifty times, hosting events such as World Championships in ice hockey, figure skating, and swimming, European championships, Davis Cup finals, and in 1985 the Eurovision Song Contest and is the home arena for Frölunda HC of Elitserien, and venue for the annual Göteborg Horse Show. Nowaays the arena is slightly overshadowed by the large stadiums called 'Ullevi' that are neaby. As the area building is not new and its capacty is uqite low (max. 14.000 people), it was decided to reconstruct the building and change the surrounding environment in a modern way. The three projects of a new 'Scandinavium' are listed below:

@ Kanozi arkitekter

(c) kanozi.se

(c) kanozi.se

(c) kanozi.se

(c) kanozi.se

@ White arkitekter

(c) white.se

(c) white.se

@ Okidoki

The area with an amusement park 'Liseberg', one of the largest hotel complexes i Europe 'Gothia Triple Towers', stadiums 'Ullevi' and a new 'Scandiavium' might become a large area of attraction with many venues.
