All - Is there any further updates about western bypass? Has actual land acquisition started or markings being done? Also is detailed map published in the local revenue department offices at least or online somewhere?

Do anybody know the actual plan for center median in Mettupalayam Road. Now it is filled with sand. Whether they will cover it with cement or lamp post will be installed or grills will be installed. Any idea or any source.
Where can we get the detailed project report for this? |

4-laning of NH-209 polarises traders, activists
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/14577625.cms
COIMBATORE: The four-laning of the National Highway-209 from Coimbatore to Pollachi has polarised public opinion. Despite repeated denials from authorities, the project seems destined for a long delay and traders, especially in Ukkadam, Athupalam and Karumbukadai, are opposing the widening of the road as it will affect their business. But activists, politicians and environmentalists welcome the project, even as they raise sharp questions about the way it is being executed. While traders whose shops are located close to the highway will lose valuable store space when the road is widened, activists point to the urgent need to regulate traffic and ensure its smooth flow. S Abbas of Karumbukadai All Traders' Association said the highways department was demolishing buildings every two years to expand the road. "The Karumbukadai to Athupalam road needs no widening. It is enough if the road is cleared at both ends. The highways department has to realise that our business is getting affected by its activities," he said. But traders like OPM Devarajan, 40, point out that if businessmen had followed rules from the beginning they would not be in trouble now. "If the instruction is to build shops 40 feet from the road, many had built them till the edge of the road. They will now stand to lose their store space," he said. Devarajan runs a hardware store in Malumatchampatti. But many activists do not share this opinion. "We welcome the project in principle, but we have certain conditions. The project is not oriented towards the people and the highways department does it according to its convenience alone," said Mekson Balu, an activist and Pollachi-based trader. He said the national highway should pass through a by-pass outside Pollachi without entering town, as major vehicles and tourists can avoid the city. Balu said the by-pass could start from Achipatti and end in Ungalampatti, passing through Puliyampatti. "The way in which the work is being implemented is perplexing. Ditches are dug in Pollachi while other preliminary works are being done in Kinathukadavu. When we enquired, we found out that this is being done because government funds for the project are released in phases. But if whole stretches of the road is laid, at least people in those parts will benefit," he said. Kinathukadavu MLA S Damodaran said property worth crores of rupees and an ancient temple would be destroyed if the NH-209 is expanded in his constituency. He said he had demanded a by-pass that will exclude the town and pass outside it. "I have raised this issue in the assembly and represented the matter with the highways department. The MP has also spoken about this in Parliament. We hope the by-pass will be built," he said. Sulakkal panchayat vice-president tried to put the issue in perspective. "If the road is built outside cities and towns, farmers will lose their land. If it runs through congested areas, traders will lose their shops and houses will be razed. But the road is a necessary evil and we want it. But the highways department should make it clear exactly how much land each person will lose. While rumours are doing the rounds, people have not received anything in writing," he said.

Podanur junction wears a deserted look
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...w/14577517.cms
COIMBATORE: Memories of a busy railway station during the old British Raj are still alive in the minds of residents of Podanur, a suburb hardly ten kilometers away from the heart of the city. The wooden columns and iron staircases of the station, which came into operation in the 1860s under the Madras Presidency, still remain intact. However, the Podanur Junction has lost its sheen with most of the trains being diverted to Coimbatore Junction. On a Sunday morning there were just three passengers on the platform. Less than 40 per cent of the long route trains stop at Podanur Junction and they too are likely to be rerouted via Coimbatore. The revised railway timetable has eclipsed Podanur's prominence on the railway map. According to railway officials, its proximity to Coimbatore Junction is the major reason for many trains skipping the junction. "How can we allow two stops within 10km of each other," asks a senior officer with the Salem Railway Division. Ironically, the station that does not see many trains, is currently under renovation at a cost of Rs 4 crore. Even railway authorities are divided on the future use of the old railway station. While some would like it to be developed as the number two station in Coimbatore, others want it to be used for halting trains that require maintenance. Passenger associations are more concerned about developing North Coimbatore, Peelamedu, Singanallur and Irugur stations than focusing on Podanur. According to Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Coimbatore president M Krishnan, the station had prominence and better usage when meter gauge trains were operated from Coimbatore to Rameswaram and Madurai. The station started losing prominence once gauge conversion was undertaken between Podanur and Dindigul on the route to Madurai and Rameswaram. Apart from road connectivity hurdles, what irks passengers is the slow progress of renovation works. Despite its old world charm, the existing station is devoid of any facilities. Though old timers were nostalgic about the flame of forest trees and the vegetarian restaurant of one Lakshmanan Iyer, the station has no passenger amenities. Connectivity between Podanur and Coimbatore is abysmal. The retirement room is dirty. The lighting is poor and the station is infested with mosquitoes. There are no snack bars open at night. There is only one drinking water tap at the only operational platform. There are no shops that sell packaged drinking water at night," says N Vikram, a passenger at the platform. Interestingly, Podanur was once the Divisional Headquarters of Southern Railway but that was later shifted to Olavakkode in Palakkad Junction. Podanur can be developed as a satellite terminal for Coimbatore which would help decongest Coimbatore Junction. But it must not be at the cost of Coimbatore Junction. Railways should ensure justice to both stations,'' said Jameel Ahmed, member of Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee. In Kerala, trains stop at most stations. Then why should the railways not allow trains to stop at Podanur and Coimbatore junctions? People living in Kurichi-Sundarapuram areas can utilize the stop,'' says V Easwaran of MDMK. Amidst the neglect, people of Podanur are hopeful of more activity at the station once the gauge conversion gets completed. There would be more passenger trains bound for Pollachi, Palani and Udumalpet once the gauge conversion gets completed.

Wait for scheme road continues; Coimbatore Corporation delays respone
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle3584267.ece
![]() Corporation sources say that they have asked for survey records It is a 30-year-wait for residents of Ward 85 of the Coimbatore Corporation. They want the Coimbatore Corporation and other departments concerned to provide the scheme road that will help them move easily to Chetty Street, Sullivan Street and areas on the east. D. Sugapathi, a resident of Jeeva Bharathi Nagar, says if the Corporation were to take up the scheme road project, the movement of vehicles between Sundakkamuthur Road bypass and Chetty Street will be easy. Traffic on Chetty Street, Perur Main Road and a few others in the locality will not be heavy as those proceeding towards Ukkadam, Kovaipudur and areas in the south can use the scheme road. For the residents of Balaji Avenue, Jeeva Bharathi Nagar, Govindasamy Layout and a host of other residential colonies too the road will be a boon, says R.V. Kumar, a resident of Prabhu Nagar. The residents, because of traffic regulations, are forced to turn left on Sullivan Street, turn right on Raja Street, take the Karuppa Gounder Street and then take a right to reach Vysial Street to reach areas on the south. They will be able to avoid such inconveniences if the Corporation were to take up the scheme road. It is not just the inconvenience. The scheme road will help residents save time and petrol, complements Ward 85 Councillor Amman K. Arjunan. The scheme road, proposed very long ago, will help reduce the traffic burden on Chetty Street, Sullivan Street, Gandhi Park, and neighbouring areas and benefit over 50,000 people. DISPUTE Aside from a minor dispute regarding the road alignment, there is nothing much to do for the Corporation and other authorities concerned as land owners who would have to part with their land have volunteered to surrender the same and accept the money the government would pay. Sources in the Coimbatore Corporation say that they were working to sort out the alignment issue and have asked for survey records.

Thudiyalur residents sit on fast to save their homes
Thudiyalur residents sit on fast to save their homes
COIMBATORE: Residents of Thudiyalur and adjoining areas sat on a fast on Tuesday demanding that the alignment of the western bypass road connecting Kuniamuthur with Thudiyalur be changed to a 1986 model that will not affect their homes. The present alignment, which according to the highways department has been approved by a high-level committee, destroys 125 homes including a large apartment complex, the residents said. "Many residents in the apartments have spent Rs 75 lakh and upwards to buy a home here. They have accumulated the money over a long period of time. Many of them are retirees. Their entire savings is being threatened. Will the government compensation be enough to meet what they have lost," asks G Balaji, a resident of Thirumurugan Nagar near Thudiyalur. According to residents, there already exists a 25m wide road which will be expanded into a 45m wide bypass road. The Rs 285 crore project runs for a distance of 26km, from Kuniamuthur to Thudiyalur. "The road was originally planned in 1986 to be built along a different alignment, which would not have affected our homes. But a private contractor has since changed the alignment," contends Balaji. When contacted, highways department officials said that adequate compensation will be paid for those living in Thirumurugan Nagar and neighbouring areas. "But we are unaware of the 1986 alignment," he said. As per the existing plan, the western bypass road will require acquisition of land in Kuniamuthur, Sundakkamuthur, Perur Chettipalayam, Vedapatti, Chithiraichavadi, Veerakeralam, Somayampalayam, Vadavalli, Pannimadai and Thudialur. |

Corpn. comes in for criticism at review meeting
![]() The Coimbatore Corporation came in for criticism from elected representatives at the latest meeting held to review the progress of works under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. Member of Parliament, Coimbatore, P.R. Natarajan told The Hindu that the way the Corporation was executing the work was not just unsatisfactory. But disappointing. None of the four schemes the Corporation has taken up under the JNNURM project – underground drainage work, storm water drain, solid waste management and Pilloor drinking water supply scheme – is complete. That too, after overshooting the target by a mere two years. Now the officials had told him that they would seek another two years to complete the project, which was condemnable. Local bodies of Grade ‘ B’ cities like Coimbatore – Mysore and Surat – that had taken up the work when the Coimbatore Corporation did, had completed the works under Phase I and were on their way to implementing schemes under Phase II. Mr. Natarajan wanted to know why the Corporation had not fixed targets and taken to task people who had overshot the deadline. He said he sought an explanation from the officials regarding the delay in completing the Pilloor water supply work, particularly the ‘Package One’ of it, which the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation is contracted to execute. The delay on the part of the Corporation to complete the work would only impact the developments in added areas, as the existing JNNURM schemes cover only the old Corporation area – 60 wards. For the remaining 40 wards the Corporation had only prepared detailed project reports. The execution was way far off. The MP also referred to the delay in clearing the hurdle with regard to the sewage treatment plant in Nanjundapuram and slackness in acquiring land for the treatment plant in Ondipudur. The Chief Minister should intervene in this issue and ensure that the Coimbatore Corporation completed the projects at the earliest. Irked by delay in rail over bridge, residents in Peelamedu to protest on July 22
COIMBATORE: Six months since city corporation mayor promised them an alternate route to the proposed Peelamedu rail over bridge (ROB) residents of the area are yet to get one. The frustrating wait has turned into anger and the residents have decided to hold an agitation on July 22. The decision was taken at a meeting attended by Peelamedu RWAs on Friday. The protest condemning city corporation would be attended by a large number of local people.
Work on ROB was supposed to begin on February 17 this year and end in eight months. When PV Gopal, president, Peelamedu Consumer Voice filed an RTI with the railways on July 3, it replied that the project work could not begin as the district administration had not made arrangements for a diversion road. "From the series of RTIs I filed, we know that a diversion road still remains a distant dream. The highways department proposal to lay an approach road has not been approved. The delay has forced us to intensify our protests," said Gopal. Gopal said nearly 50,000 residents living in Cheran Maa Nagar, Vilankurichi and Thaneerpandal would benefit if the bridge is built. "The Vilankurichi Road is a busy stretch and the Absence of a bridge is time-consuming for people who are also forced to spend more on fuel," he said. Residents, meanwhile, have alleged that the highways department had withdrawn a proposal to expand the bridge on both sides, reducing its width from 80feet to 60feet. They said this was being done to accommodate the wishes of powerful citizens living on Vilankurichi Road. "The GRT School and Vijaykumar Ginning Factory, apart from a few companies, are situated on the road. About 40 families have gone to the court to obtain a stay against the widening of the road. In view of all this, we have no option but to protest," said an activist. http://articles.timesofindia.indiati...inning-factory
