design have to do with being as much creative as you can with a given amount of money, we milanese people should know it best...the problem here is that it is just not creative at all as a result...it is not "cheap", it is just effortless.

Is not a question how much you're payed, is about how much you care.
As architect I just can say that you must do the best with the amount of money you have. Here there is no design at all, it's .... whatever.

Realizzazione della linea 4 della Metropolitana di Milano - Tratta S.Cristoforo - Linate
La linea M4 della Metropolitana di Milano si estende dalla stazione di San Cristoforo alla stazione di Linate e prevede la realizzazione di 21 stazioni.

La prestazione sviluppata riguarda:

- la progettazione architettonica – funzionale definitiva ed esecutiva di 7 stazioni: S Babila, Tricolore, Susa, Argonne, Forlanini F.S., Forlanini Quartiere e Linate;

- la progettazione strutturale definitiva ed esecutiva delle stazioni Forlanini FS e Linate e dei manufatti di interlinea Forlanini 3 e 4;

- La progettazione architettonica-funzionale delle aste di manovra idroscalo e del manufatto idroscalo;

- la progettazione architettonica e strutturale definitiva ed esecutiva delle strutture architettoniche di superficie afferenti all’intera linea M4 (coperture scale mobili e fisse, torrini ascensori, postazioni bike-sharing e torrini impiantistici) nonchč il progetto integrato della segnaletica.

La progettazione integrata degli ambienti dedicati all’utenza č stata guidata dai criteri di psicologia ambientale finalizzati alla definizione di soluzioni architettoniche, impiantistiche e di finitura in grado di consentire il massimo comfort , l’elevata fruibilitą degli spazi e la percezione di un ambiente sicuro, efficiente e di qualitą.

Il layout distributivo della stazione tipologica ipogea č stato appositamente studiato al fine di garantire percorsi e collegamenti intuitivi, agevoli e diretti tra piano campagna, mezzanino e banchine, semplificando il percorso dell'utenza ai treni.



Particolare attenzione č stata posta alla definizione delle strutture di superficie, chiamate sia a garantire un layout immediatamente riconoscibile ed individuabile dall’utenza nel panorama urbano sia a relazionarsi ed integrarsi con contesti differenti, anche di notevole valore storico. Sono state pertanto definite strutture di copertura tipologiche caratterizzate dalla trasparenza e dai giochi di riflessi offerti da ampie superfici vetrate posate ad angolature differenti e supportate da montanti metallici la cui finitura superficiale cromatica e materica č definita a seconda dello specifico contesto urbano di inserimento.

La stazione di Linate, data la particolare tipologia dovuta alla rilevanza strategica di nodo intermodale urbano, si caratterizza per la realizzazione di una grande piazza quadrangolare ipogea al piano mezzanino che guadagna la superficie attraverso una leggera copertura vetrata schermata da sottili elementi metallici; la stazione č direttamente collegata mediante percorsi sotterranei e strutture di superficie al terminal aeroportuale e a un punto di scambio intermodale “kiss and ride”.



Anche la stazione Forlanini FS prevede un’importante appendice funzionale ed architettonica di superficie, implementando la struttura ipogea con un organismo edilizio specializzato e propedeutico al raccordo con il nodo del passante ferroviario e la relativa fermata; la struttura ospita attivitą legate a funzioni commerciali e si caratterizza per la trasparenza delle superfici, schermate ed articolate da un sistema di brise soleil metallici posti su piani orizzontali sfalsati.

So because we are in the international forum, I think it should be better that we talk in english... (and I'm so bad in english )

Anyway, the M4 will be similar to the M5, talking about the trains and the technology of the system, but the tunnel will be quite different. Because of lack of time, they have decided to use a single TBM with bigger diameter, one dig for both traks, also the stations will be placed inside the single tunnel, so they have to dig just the exits.

But at the moment there aren't so much informations about the works, that have just started.

Erm, it's just a bit more complicated than that

You just described the central branch.

Actually M4 will have four different functional stretches.

Linate-Susa, Susa-San Babila, San Babila-Parco Solari, Parco Solari San Cristoforo

They will be built by two single track tunnels for the entire lenght, but just the central stretch (San Babila-Solari) will have tunnels wide enough to contain the platforms.
They could dig smaller areas on the surface to build the stations that way, in a stretch where to find wide areas is difficult.
And, yep, obviously they could dig those tunnels quicker as the TBM won't have to stop every station


They will use 5 TBMs overall

And more specifically, I translate from the technical report

The 4 ones with a lower diameter are going to build
  • The two tunnels between Linate station and Susa station
  • The tunnel between Susa and San Babila, for the even-numbered track, and between Susa station and largo Augusto shaft, for the odd-numbered track. Afterwards the two machines will be disassembled pull out and brought to San Cristoforo yard for the subsequent reuse
  • The tunnels between San Cristoforo shaft and Parco Solari station
The wider diameter TBM will build in chronological order the two galleries from Parco Solari station to San Babila station, for the even-numbered track, and from Parco Solari station to largo Augusto shaft, for the odd-numbered track.

M5 extension. The first two TBMs (from San Siro to Tre Torri) just ended their run

Now we're waiting for the other two coming from Monumentale (they're now beetwen Ceniso and Gerusalemme stations)
