I wishe ATM replaced these horrible floors by something slightly better looking and not so dark, OR that is started using brighter lighting directed to the walls/columns/tunnel lining on stations. That would give a totally refreshed appearance to the M1 stations west of Cadorna.

Sorry, but "these floors" are an "milanese icon". No way, we will keep them until doomsday comes
Seriously: it's part of the design and should be kept where the original layout of Albini/Noorda has to be preseved in the future. There are stations, many but not all of those opened in 1964, where you get the impression that "it has to be so, no other way": Amendola, Conciliazione for example. Not the busiest stations but someway the proportions are right to deal with that pavement and all the rest, and not only inside, also outside on the street.
In other stations, mainly those more recent, You just feel sick to see it.

They look awful today. Not because they're old, as there is plenty of old architecture that perfectly works today, but because they're a tad ugly (euphemism).

New metro train arrives in Milan for testing
31 JUL, 2014

Milan’s new metro has been towed from Reggio Calabria on Italy’s south coast to Milan to undergo dynamic testing before it goes into service later this year.

Operator Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM) ordered 30 new metro trainsets in 2012 from AnsaldoBreda. The trains, which have been manufactured at AnsaldoBreda’s factory in Reggio Calabria, will be split between lines M1 and M2.

The first six-car set will now be tested to ensure the signalling and train control systems are all working correctly before the trains start to enter service in October.

The last of 20 trains being supplied to M1 is scheduled to arrive by the end of July 2015 while M2′s last train isn’t expected to be delivered until the end of March 2016.

ATM and AnsaldoBreda have said 14 trains will be operating on M1 by May 2015 in time for Expo 2015, which opens on May 12.

The new fleet has been funded by a €220 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB)

Streetcars in Milan

An impression of the great streetcar system in Milan, with the 80 years old Peter Witt streetcars still going strong.

Malpensa Terminal 2 rail link contract awarded
10 Sep 2014

ITALY: Main construction works for an extension of Milano’s Malpesa Express airport rail link from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 is set to get underway shortly, following the award of the €77m contract to Itinera.

Terminal 2 handles six million passengers a year, around a third of the airport’s traffic, but trains from Milano Centrale currently terminate at Terminal 1 with transfer between the terminals provided by shuttle bus. The journey time between the terminals will be less than 4 min when the extension opens in December 2015. The medium-term aim is for a service to carry around a third of all air passengers
