Is taking the Malpensa Express from the airport worth it if my final destination is at Greco Pirelli? I know that either way I'd have to transfer somewhere so I'm wondering if I shouldn't bother with the express and just take the regional train instead if the difference in fares is big

MILAN | Public Transport

Malpensa Airport has always a special fare. There are no regional trains arriving/departing from the airport. It'also true that some Malpensa Express trains can be used with common regional fare tickets, but only between intermediate stations.
I don't remember exactly, but if on the ticket is written only "MILANO" as destination/origin, without any specification like "CENTRALE" or "CADORNA", you're allowed to reach any train-station with in the city boundaries.
So the only way of savong money departing from Malpensa with the train is: take the first train with intermediate stops (check carefully which stops the train will call at), issuing a special fare ticket to that station (Busto Arsizio is pretty good choice, as in Ferno-Lonate only few trains stop), get off the train, take a regional fare ticket to Milano, and get on the first in direction Milano.
Another hint: pay attention, some Malpensa Express trains, even stopping at intermediate stations, may have only first class.
Last hint: with in Milano, you can use only railways with a railway ticket, no trams, buses, and metro. Viceversa if You have a urban fare ticket of Milano ("tariffa urbana") You're able to take any kind of mean of transport, including railways. Only inside of the city boundaries. Metro and trains only once per ticket, buses and trams as You please during the 90 minutes of validity.

Check to make sure that it isn't cheaper/easier/faster to fly into another city and get to Milan by train.

Yes, and loosing more than a couple of hours in doing so.
WTF of suggestions are these?
The only way to safe money in getting to down-town, using a different airport, is to arrive at Linate. But flights aren't that cheap.
Time is money!

Or Bergamo (Orio al Serio), the airport where Ryanair is based. It's not that far from Milan.

Sure, but if You planned a journey landing at Malpensa, it means that other low-cost solutions aren't that simple. That means that You need to travel with several flights and connections. A waste of time, lot of time. Is it worth to save 10-20 Euro of transfer costs from airport to city?
I don't think.

I don't know the current situation (the last time I was there was four years ago) but there were some very cheap private bus services from Orio to Milan (bus station at the side of Milano C.le). If I remember correctl, the price was 5 €.
But the bus was very uncomfortable. :-)

If time is money, then is it worth the extra money to arrive earlier?

An earlier flight to Rome, followed by a quick ETR trip up to Milan might be faster and cheaper.

Google Maps tells me I can take R28 (which I assume is regional) to Porta Garibaldi and then from there get to Greco Pirelli taking the R14

Yes, that's preatty correct, but R28 are the trains branded "Malpensa Express" heading to Milano Centrale.
Whatever train You're gonna take at Malpensa, always the speciale fare applies. You won't even be able to issua a ticket based on regional fare.
R28 trains make regional service with exeption of the airport stations.

So I must correct my first statement: there are regional trains heading to Malpensa, even swiss ones, but always a special fare apply.

BTW: You will not find any of the regional line numbers on public displays. Only suburban lines have their number displayed and announced.

If you're flying into Milan from Canada via Madrid (where I suppose you'll have at least a 2- or 3-hour layover) I think it's pretty clear that a less expensive fare is your priority over time efficiency, else you'd take a non-stop flight.

In any case, what everyone is missing here is that when you book an intercontinental flight spending €10 or even €20 on local transportation is fairly irrelevant, especially if you have a Canadian income (I live in the US, all this bickering about a euro or two seems to me rather pointless).

One final note: I hate correcting people, but I can't stand seeing "loose" used instead of "lose". And nobody loses time, one WASTES time.
