Darn! The wife and I were chatting earlier today and we thought about doing $8 dollar round trips just for fun!

Actually, Los Angeles might look at intracity flights as a way to beat traffic.

I hear Houstonians do that all the time

Is there a rail/subway line that will take me to the beach- then to The Farmer's Market in Fairfax, thennnn, to Dodger Stadium so's I can watch a game and then to L A X so I can return home?
No? 'Cause, if that's the case then I'll just hold onto my precious Rolls!

A grain of truth here as well. As long as we're making up the future, I can see a time where people have cars but use them only rarely (like many folks with money in NY). In general you walk, ride a bike or motorbike, take transit or taxis; but you keep your car parked for outings outside the transit network.

Of course, some people already do this in LA. But I can see it becoming general at least in the LA area as Klam defines it.

You live at LAX? And this is what I mean by "learned helplessness" one of Destructo Ronnie's favorite lines. Yes rail can take you to the beach. There are many local Farmer's Markets popping up in many neighborhoods now so if there is one in your hood you probably could walk there. If a Farmer's Market doesn't exist in your neighborhood get with your Neighborhood Council and get one going. Dodger's Stadium unfortunately may never have direct rail because of the way that it is situated. But you can take rail to Union Station and ride free to Dodger's Stadium a service provided by the MTA. Up until only 6 years ago NYC didn't have direct rail service to JFK either. What it had was akin to what we have now, shuttle buses that would take you from the Howard Beach station for the last hop to the airport. Before Airtrain was constructed I never heard any New Yorker stating that they were going to keep their Rolls because the A train didn't go to JFK. Further LA has the excellent Flyaway service that will take you from many points all over the city to LAX. Btw, La Guardia also doesn't have direct rail service and may never. Yet still I hear of no New Yorker threatening to buy a car over this.
To be noted: Buses, trollies, ferries, cabs are all used in all major cities to supplement a rail network. Because trains can never take you everywhere you dream to go other modes are used to get you there and that's in all major cities that I've visited. In Mexico City the subway system couldn't get me to the Teotihuacan pyramids nor should I expect it to so I took a bus there. In NYC to get to the Statue Of Liberty or Staten Island there was no train so I took a ferry there. This argument is usually made by someone who has not intention of ever getting out of their car. It is a disingenuous argument and ashamedly hypocritical because while in any of the other major cities that I've mentioned above I doubt that you would forgo important attractions simply on the basis that "rail doesn't go there". So yes, you'd be on a ferry to the Statue Of Liberty and a bus to the pyramids. When you're ready to make a serious argument on what to do to make the system better, the points of interest that it may potentially miss and how to supplement that through the use of other modes and the needed change in lifestyle that inevitably comes with less dependance on private automobile then we can talk.

You make the slight of thinking I give a shit about what people east of the Hudson think,
or whether they will ever have the dexterity to drive at all.
.
Now, if I'm in Mexico City, and it wasn't a human shitstain down there, (as far as auto theft is concerned) then I could take my Rolls to the Avenue of the Dead as easily as the Avenue of the Stars, which still isn't served and is having trouble getting served-
and that's the problem!
.
I'm a fabulous looking Cat, why would I take the Blue Line to Long Beach?
This ain't 1923! Why would I want to go 35 miles an hour down to Long Beach-stop and start, stop and start, stop and start, stop and start, stop and start, stop and startOOOPS! Hey, that little kid's bike flew farther than he did!
Puh LEEEEEZE!!
.
I'm sorry, but you tried to use transportation in other cities as an example for this discussion- but if I lived in those cities it would be a different matter. I live in Las Vegas. I wouldn't dream of being in L. A. without my car! I would go to L A X or Burbank to get home-
(subway to Burbank?)
Here I'm talking about local transportation and you're talking about tourism.
.
Here's what I want:
.
Heavy rail to L A X.
.
Heavy rail to Burbank, for that matter!
.
At least a monorail to Malibu- my beach of choice.
.
A branch off the Subway to the Sea that drops me to the Farmers Market on Fairfax- my market of choice.
.
annnd, a monorail into Anaheim that joins up to the Disneyland monorail at the Happiest Place on Earth!

Why did I ever think to engage you in a sensible discussion about public transportation. According to the above statement perhaps you are just too FABULOUS for the train.

the words "small" and "LA" should never be in the same sentence

Car sharing is the missing link.

The fixed-guideway systems are expanding, but more car-sharing services are required at the stations so that all medium- and long-distance travel in southern California can occur by rail.

Not that much smaller than the NYC CSA. I estimate that if the LA CSA continues to grow at the same pace it will overtake NYC CSA around 2050.

The NY CSA will be expanded to include a larger area if that looks likely to happen.

remember all these numbers are manipulated by men the way they want it to look to satisfy their imagination and their differences and cause nothing but confusion, hates and destruction. these were the choices of the past. we now live in the 21st century we should no longer continu to adapt these old ideas that separates people and causes hates and destruction. they should make things less confused by calling dogs by their names instead of calling cuts dogs ands dogs cuts. los angeles should just be refered to as a city of 18mil people period and new york 22mil. what you see is what you get that the way the city looks and call it exactly the way it looks instead of causing unnecessary confusion. what the difference between long beach, so call LA or san bernadino, orange county and so and so. it is in the same city. same area no separation what so ever. you cannot expect people in LA to know all these squar feet. boundaries and so and so. it is the same city period.

A few days ago, I calculate the area of Los Angeles using this site: http://www.freemaptools.com/area-calculator.htm

This is the map

The area was 5820 km2 or 2247 square miles.

Pretty huge.

It's funny that this thread exists,

It's like me starting a thread on how China is small.
