A picture, dates for app and opening and a public consultation tonight! I'm glad to see them keen to encorporate extensive underground parking, I think more developments need to take this into consideration rather than having vast surface car parks

Latest plans for the new dental hospital at Pebble Mill
THIS is the first glimpse of how Birmingham’s new state-of-the-art dental hospital and school of dentistry could look.

Planning consent for the multi-million pound project, on the site of the former BBC studios in Pebble Mill Road, Edgbaston, was gained last November.

And now the public are being asked to comment on these computer generated images before final designs are submitted to the city council in early May.

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust said the four-storey facility would replace the current dental hospital in St Chads Queensway, which is now 50-years-old.

The Trust said the new hospital would be split by a central entrance and atrium, with a larger area for medical uses and a smaller section as an educational centre.

Medical director Rick Roberts said: “The existing hospital has given tremendous service for nearly half a century. But it is clear we need to relocate in order to continue providing the right quality of treatment for patients and learning opportunities for students.

“Birmingham Community Healthcare is committed to the continuing development of a broad range of specialist and community healthcare services for the people of Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region.

“We are very pleased we have outline planning consent for the development of a new dental hospital.”

Construction of the new development, which is being overseen by Calthorpe Estates, could start later this year with the hospital scheduled to open in 2014.

On-site parking for staff, students and patients is being drafted into the scheme with developers keen to incorporate an extensive area of underground parking to keep the number of visible parked vehicles at a minimum.

The designs, which have been tweaked since the scheme was first proposed, are on display today at the Midland Arts Centre in Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston, from 2pm until 7pm.

For people who can’t attend the exhibition, questions can be emailed to newbuild@bhamcommunity.nhs.uk

Preferred contractors announced for the new Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry

A shortlist of two preferred contractors has been drawn up to work with partners on the proposed new Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry.

Outline planning permission on the former BBC Pebble Mill site was granted by Birmingham City Council in November 2011 and since then all organisations (led by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, together with partners the University of Birmingham, Birmingham and Solihull LIFT (BaS LIFT), One Creative Environments Ltd and Calthorpe Estates) have been progressing the new facility that would deliver the same range of services currently provided at the Whittall Street site in a modern fit-for-purpose building.

In conjunction with this design and development work, 11 contractors who stated an interest in the scheme were invited to tender for the proposed project, through a two stage process. Following the first stage, incorporating a written submission and an interview, this list has now been shortlisted to two companies – Galliford Try and Skanska.

Both these companies will embark on Stage 2 of the process to work on a collaborative basis with BaS LIFT’s design and development teams, with both companies to enter a final submission in the summer.

The Birmingham Dental Hospital project team held staff, student and public consultations last month and a final planning application (of reserved matters) is expected to be submitted during May 2012.

Backing for new Birmingham dental hospital on old BBC Pebble Mill site
By Anuji Varma Jun 21 2012
Plans to build a new state-of-the-art dental hospital and school of dentistry in Birmingham have won Government backing, it has been confirmed.

The Department of Health has approved the first of a two stage business case for the development on the site of the former BBC studios in Pebble Mill Road, in Birmingham.

Planning consent for the £31 million project, on the site on Mill Road, Edgbaston, was gained last November.

If permission is granted, it is hoped construction will start this winter and the new dental hospital and school of dentistry would be open for patients and students during 2014.

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust said the four-storey facility would replace the current dental hospital in St Chads Queensway, which is now 50 years old.

The new hospital would be split by a central entrance and atrium, with a larger area for medical uses and a smaller section as an educational centre.

The proposed development, led by the trust with partners the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, Solihull Local Initiative Finance Trust (BaS LIFT) and Calthorpe Estates would aim to deliver the same range of services provided at the existing site in a modern fit-for-purpose building.

Medical director Rick Roberts said: “We are very pleased to have received approval from the Department of Health for this new hospital.

“The design of the new facility is well underway and is being developed to meet the changing needs of specialist modern dentistry and vital teaching practice to underpin the regional dental provision for the future.

“The existing hospital and school has a strong international reputation for specialist care, high calibre graduate and post-graduate training as well as significant research in dental methods, equipment and materials.

“It is anticipated the investment in this new facility will add to this reputation, especially when considering a comparable facility has not been constructed within the last 40 years.”

The project will be funded under the LIFT model supported by Treasury

Wouldn't surprise me as they do need extra room but they are rumoured to be moving away from their site, they have said they will continue to invest in facilities

New dental hospital could pave way for medical park at Pebble Mill site
By Ben Hurst Dec 6 2012

A new dental hospital in Birmingham would be the first step towards creating a huge medical park on the Pebble Mill site once occupied by the BBC.

Plans to build the dental hospital in Birmingham are set to get the green light from city planners.

Full permission is set to be given to the scheme, which would be built on the site of the former BBC studios in Pebble Mill Road, Edgbaston.

If it goes ahead, it would represent a key step on the way to creating a ‘life sciences’ economic zone in the city.

In September the Post revealed that six economic zones in the city, including a medical area near the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, were key to attracting £1.5 billion of investment to the city over the next three to five years, creating up to 50,000 jobs.

A report to Birmingham city council’s planning committee on Thursday, December 6, recommended the dental hospital scheme be given approval.

The project would see 450 people working on the site, along with 670 students in training. More than 100,000 patients would be treated there every year.

It would replace the existing facility, next door to Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the city centre, which has been in use for 50 years.

The Department of Health has already given its approval to the first of a two-stage business case for the development on the site of the former BBC studios.

Outline planning consent for the £31 million project, on the site on Mill Road, Edgbaston, was gained last November. The iconic Pebble Mill site, the home of the BBC in Birmingham for 32 years, has stood unused since the Corporation relocated to the Mailbox in the city centre in 2004.

The planning report said: “The proposal will form an integral and central part of the regeneration of the wider Pebble Mill site.

“The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry would be set among future development aspirations for the medical park that include private hospitals and supporting medical uses.

“The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry would be one of only ten in England and the sole facility in the West Midlands. It would provide treatment for around 110,000 attendances each year, together with undergraduate and postgraduate training for dental practitioners.

“The facility would be the first standalone, multi-facility, new-build dental hospital and school constructed in the country since the 1970s, providing state-of-the-art facilities for dental training, dental care, and dental research and development.”

Construction could start next year and the new dental hospital and school of dentistry would be open for patients and students during 2014. The development is being led by the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, with partners the University of Birmingham, Solihull Local Initiative Finance Trust (BaS LIFT) and Calthorpe Estates.

Medical director Rick Roberts said: “The new facility is being developed to meet the changing needs of specialist modern dentistry and vital teaching practice to underpin the regional dental provision for the future.

Birmingham’s first dental hospital was created in 1858 and the current building is the sixth replacement.

Brum's new 'Soviet-style' dental hospital gets the go-ahead
6 Dec 2012 20:30

Bid launched to 'improve' design of new £31m facility on the former BBC Pebble Mill site at Edgbaston

An artist's impression of the proposed new dental hospital on the former Pebble Mill site
Designs for Birmingham’s new dental hospital were likened to Soviet-style architecture at its worst by council planners.

Committee members were scathing of images for the development of a new £31m hospital on the former BBC Pebble Mill site at Edgbaston.

But the state-of-the-art facility, which will replace the current city centre hospital, was approved despite the objections.

Planning committee member Coun Barry Henley (Lab, Brandwood) said the design was poor.

“There are blocks of colour which make it look like it is already falling to bits.”

And colleague Coun Bob Beauchamp (Con, Erdington) added: “It looks like something from the old Soviet republic. This site screams out for a better design.”

Planning officers agreed to work with architects to ensure the design was improved.

There were also claims that the hospital’s backers had performed a U-turn over car parking spaces, cut to 247 from the promised 292.

Coun James Hutchings (Con, Edgbaston) said: “There was a lot of public support because of the parking.

“Residents have suffered with the university and the new QE hospital parking. I am slightly horrified that this has now been reduced by 25 per cent.”

But transport officers said the parking was more than adequate.

Although critical of the design and parking, the committee was supportive of the overall development and investment in healthcare.

After securing planning permission, Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust said work would begin on site next spring, with the hospital expected to open in 2015.

Medical director Rick Roberts said: “This represents a very significant step forward and reflects great credit on the excellent work of all partners involved in the project.

“We will continue to listen to the views of our staff and others on the final stage of the business case as we progress towards making these exciting plans a reality.”

I am aware they are looking at possible relocation options, do you know where they are thinking and how likely it is?
