Sydney Olympic Park - June 2011

I was at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday, the site of the 2000 Sydney Olympics, checking out the bike tracks that have been installed there in recent years. I took lots of photos while I was there of the park, sports arenas, buildings and some of Sydney's suburban skylines.

AUSTRALIA TOWERS II

New tower for Sydney Olympic Park, Australia Towers II designed by Bates Smart
16 March 2012

Work begins in June at Sydney Olympic Park on Australia Towers II, the 25-storey apartment tower on Australia Avenue the second in a high-rise 'trilogy'.

The tower has been designed by Bates Smart in an elliptical shape inspired by the iconic geometry of the nearby stadia. As well as looking spectacular, ATII is environmentally-sound and ecologically-efficient.

“We’ve given the building ‘gills’ so that it can breath,” said Philip Vivian, a director of Bates Smart about the competition-winning design. “Vertical slots on the northern and southern sides of the facade encourage natural airflow through the apartments and the communal spaces.

“The design maximises light into each apartment, and horizontal sun-shading bands circling the building in varying depths provide added protection to the north.”

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and spacious balconies allow residents to capture the expansive views – north over Homebush Bay to Chatswood, east to the Sydney CBD, south over Bicentennial Park to Sydney Airport and west to the Blue Mountains.

ATII is being jointly developed by Ecove and SOPA (Sydney Olympic Park Authority), and will have 267 apartments, ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedrooms.

Construction is scheduled to start mid-year, with completion expected by early 2014.

AT11 will have four retail spaces, including a cafe which will overlook a terrace garden and be a peaceful place for people to meet. It will also have a safe purpose-built outdoor space for children, allowing parents to relax as they sip their latte.

Overall there will be a total of 16 shops spread over two levels in what, ultimately, will be three stages of Australia Towers.
