RIO DE JANEIRO 2011 - 5th Military World Games

The 5th Military World Games will be the largest military sport event ever in Brazil. The event will happen in the city of Rio de Janeiro in July 2011 and will gather 8,000 participants. Athletes will be approximately 6,000 and 2,00 delegates from over 100 countries. Twenty sports will be competing, some for the first time in military world games, such as beach volleyball. Brazil should participate with 250 athletes and will be represented in all sports.

The choice by Brazil to host the 5th Military World Games took place in May 2007, in Burkina Faso (Africa), during the meeting of the International Military Sports Council (acronym in French Conseil International du Sport Militaire-CISM).

The country had played with Turkey the right to host the games. In the final judgment, the sports infrastructure already created in Rio de Janeiro for the Pan American Games, the Brazilian experience in major events and the support shown by the Brazilian authorities to the project were decisive for the victory of Brazil.

Logistic Area makes adjustments for the Military World Games
Wednesday, 29 June 2011 00:00

The meeting of the Coordination and Integration of the 5th Military World Games with law enforcement agencies, support staff of the State and Municipality of Rio de Janeiro held on Tuesday afternoon, June 28, was also attended by representatives of CET Rio, Municipal Guard, Military Police and Fire Department. Col. Paes Barreto, Assistant to the General Planning, stressed the importance of these meetings, which began in 2010.

" That alignment among public bodies is very important, and they are already integrated with the work and that will be fundamental to the movement of athletes and public during the competition. It's the final lap of a series of meetings aiming to tune up the details", he said.

The Municipal Guard introduced the staff that will provide support near the premises. 400 agents will be spread across all 28 venues. A special scheme is being assembled for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and it will involve around 180 agents on the surroundings of João Havelange Stadium, the Engenhão.

Rehearsing the arrival of the delegations

Next 1 and 2, July, two rehearsals will be made in order to coordinate the commuting of the Peace Games delegations from their arrival in Rio de Janeiro to the facilities in the Athletes´Villages and training of athletes at the sports venues. On Friday and Saturday the simulation begins with the landing at the Antonio Carlos Jobim (Galeão) Airport, then the transfer to the Green Village in Deodoro. At the entrance of the village, accreditation and accommodation in the apartments will be provided. In the afternoon, the group will be taken to the venues and then return to the Athletes' Village. The operation will also test the food service and overnight in the village.

Arion and the Peace Troop

Arion is the mascot of Rio 2011 Games. Alongside the Peace Troop, he will receive from July 16 about 6000 athletes from 110 countries that will come to Brazil to compete in the 5th Military World Games.

Arion's mission is to overwhelm people with the ultimate goal of theevent: promoting, through sport, the peace among nations.

Designed by Mauricio de Sousa, Arion was inspired by a boy who turns into a Super Military Athlete, using the magical symbol of a white dove, which marks the Rio 2011 Peace Games.

Arion has the company of the Peace Troop representing the Armed Forces (Navy, Army and Air Force) and Auxiliary Forces (the Fire Department and the Military Police).
