Not long back from a 2 week trip to NYC.

I stayed in Bed-stuy too, Stuyvesant avenue just off utica avenue C-line.

I can honestly say that I felt safer in bed-stuy than I do walking through any part of the city i currently reside, Glasgow, Scotland.

Now looking for sponsorship and a job in NYC. Its very difficult even for a structural engineer with 12 years experience......... Currently looking for a NY wife.....

I walked many places between the Battery and Upper West side incuding some areas close to the Hudson River late at night, on my own without worrying much ? I also took subway around 3am alone, really alone as no one else on the carriage I was in. There is a big population so figure crime is just a statistic compared to the number of people so New York is as safe as anywhere else I reckon. Or I was just lucky ?

By any measure NY is the safest big city in America, and one of the safest urban areas in the country. Forbes ranked NY as the 10th safest city in the county last year, behind Aurora CO, Colorado Springs CO, Mesa AZ, San Jose CA, Lincoln NE, Santa Ana CA, Honolulu HI, Henderson NV, and Plano TX. Obviously none of them are nearly the same size or are nearly as diverse.

I'll probably stay around Bedford Ave and Park Pl, so it's halfway between Bed-stuy and Crown Heights.
Looking at trulia.com house value map, it shouldn't be THAT bad. Furthermore, I've already walked on the west side of Prospect Park (Park Slope) at night... it wasn't crowded at all, but I felt safe.
Speaking in general, if you're looking for troubles, you'll find'em.

By the way it was absolutely quiet and safe even at night, there were a few patrols going up and down Bedford Ave and Park Pl.

Manhattan is relatively safe. There are some spots that you may wanna take some caution. I assume most tourists don't really venture out to other borroughs. I can't speak much but it seems like The Bronx still hasn't shook off its bad reputation. Maybe the should change the name to Kings County again. In Queens, I feel most areas are safe even the gritty ones like Jackson Heights. It's areas like Jamaica and Far Rockaway that is best avoided

I reckon danger presents itself when least expected or when you let your guard down in, e.g., smaller communities Williamsburg, Spanish Harlem, Jamaica, or even Detroit; no problem. Seattle? that's where I found myself being chased, on two separate visits there

I wouldn't put Williamsburg in the same list as Jamaica or even Detroit (especially if you look at the house prices). It's as safe as most parts of Manhattan.

I agree, although that part of my recollections hails from the 1980s

I have a close friend who lives in the Bronx. He loves it and I don't think he's ever had a problem. Despite that, the borough still has a reputation. I think it's beginning to change though.

In general, NYC is a lot better than it used to be in terms of crime. Doing pretty good for a city of it's size imo.

I took the subway all the way up to Inwood Hill Park (207th Street). Very inrteresting neighbourhod, I really couldn't tell I was still in Manhattan. I actually got lost for a while in Inwood Hill Park. After that I crossed the Spuyten Devil Creek and walked around a bit in The Bronx. I only saw luxury condo's, large villa's and big green parks with some nice views on the Pallisades. Not the image I expected from the Bronx.

That's more or less the northernmost area you can also see while doing a round trip on the Cricle Line cruises. It's surrounded by trees and it's more (way more) affluent than the rest of the Bronx. Definitely beautiful and better looking than, let's say, some public housing condos in the Lower East Side.

I guess I didn't realise how far up north Manhattan lies compared to the Bronx.

That video is amazing. They weren't too strong on CGI back in the 1920s so that scene with the horses must have been for real.

Wow, you were right in my neighborhood.

Inwood Hill park is the last original forest in New York City. It is the only one that was never cut down at any time, so there are trees that go back to colonial times. Don't know if you saw it but there is a monument there to the spot where supposedly the Dutch bought the island of Manhattan from the Indians.

Just so you know, in late June early July I pick rasberrys in those woods. There are lots of them and they are great on vanilla ice cream.

The "river" you crossed isn't really a river. It is called the Harlem River Ship Canal. The original "Spuyten Duyvil" river was completely changed to make it navigable for decent size ships. Don't know if you saw the big rock wall along the river with the huge "C" pained on it. The "C" is for Columbia University as their football stadium is there. But where that was before a lot of land was taken away to make the ship canal but that used to be an armements factory there.

The bridge you walked across would have been the Henry Hudson Bridge. That is a highway rather than a regular road (you went by tollbooths right?). Crossing that you wind up in Riverdale which is one of the wealthiest sections of New York City. If you go way inside there are private roads with huge mansions on them.

This is a sight that gives some Inwood history:
