Lufthansa: Direct Frankfurt-KL flights
Francis Dass Published: 2013/11/26
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New.../lulu/Article/

GERMANY'S Lufthansa, encouraged by Malaysia's tourism and economic prospects, is flying direct into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) starting March 30 2014.

Kuala Lumpur will be linked via non-stop flights to the airline's hub in Frankfurt five times a week and the Frankfurt-KL flight incorporates onward connection to Jakarta, said Dr Christian Altmann, Lufthansa Passenger Airlines' regional director for Singapore, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

The flights will operate on Lufthansa's Airbus A340-600 with eight seats in the First Class, 48 seats in the Business Class and 270 Economy Class seats.

"We have no doubt that we will fill the aircraft. KL is a hub for us and we will fill the flights," said Altmann, confident that the take-up rate of both the direct flights and the Jakarta connecting flights will be high.

Lufthansa is currently flying into Kuala Lumpur four times weekly via Bangkok.

For Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, which has already welcomed six new airlines (Thai Smile, Malindo Air, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Philippine Airlines and Regent Airways) to KLIA this year , Lufthansa is another feather in its cap.

Asked how negotiations were progressing with British Airways which had pulled out of Malaysia a decade ago due to low load factor, MAHB's general manager (marketing) Mohamed Sallauddin Mat Sah said it will take another two or three years before BA makes a comeback to KLIA.

"British Airways did a market study earlier this year and they had a good collection of information from all stakeholders: MAHB, Tourism Malaysia and industry stakeholders like British companies which have operations here. We have made a good impression on the British Airways team and hope they will resume flights to KL.

"Even managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad had discussions with the British Airways' senior management team, including their CEO, and we are awaiting their decision. We will continue to talk to them until they are ready to come back to Kuala Lumpur," said Sallauddin.

"What is important now is that they have recognised the increasing importance of the Malaysian market. As you can see, this year we received many new foreign airlines, and today with Lufthansa announcing direct flights to KL, a decision will probably be made in the next two or three years," said Sallauddin.

As for Australian carrier Qantas, Sallauddin said MAHB and the airline from Down Under are actively exchanging information.

"Qantas was focused on its partnership with Emirates last year. With that settled, they may relook at the Asian market and how they are going to strategise and operate in this region. Nothing conclusive has come out so far, but we talk to airlines continuously so that they will not lose sight of Kuala Lumpur," Sallauddin added.

On klia2, he said there will be 10 airlines operating from the terminal, including AirAsia, when it opens next year.

Air France to expand KL-Paris frequency and capacity
Bilqis BahariPublished: 2013/12/13
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...#ixzz2nLlZcMwv

KUALA LUMPUR: Air France will increase its direct Kuala Lumpur (KL)-Paris flight to four times a week from the current thrice weekly, starting June 16 next year.

Senior vice president (Asia Pacific) Patrick Roux said the airline’s passenger capacity will also be increased by 25 per cent from January 12 next year on its current KL-Paris flights.

The capacity increase will see its Boeing 777-200 aircraft having new configuration of 35 seats in business class, 24 in premium economy and 250 in economy classes, giving a total of 309 seats instead of the current 246.

“The increased capacity and frequency reflect the strong demand for the Air France service… The growing popularity of our KL-Paris route clearly demonstrates the strength of the bilateral relations between Malaysia and France,” he told newsmen at a press conference yesterday.

Roux added the introduction of the direct flight in April this year has created greater economic opportunities, which are reflected in the increasing demand for travel between both countries.

“I expect this expansion to be well received by our leisure and business customers alike, who will be able to take advantage of the additional frequency and the improved connecting opportunities between our Asian and European hubs,” he said.

Meanwhile, Air France country manager (Malaysia) Estee Ng said the airline has seen a healthy load factor of above 80 per cent in its KL-Paris route since its introduction in April.

She said that with the additional flight frequency and passenger capacity increase, the airline expects to see its load factor to remain in its healthy position next year.

Air France also announced that it is investing over 500 million euros as part of its commercial strategy called Best & Beyond, which is an emblematic Transform 2015 project.

Roux said the aim of the project is to ensure that Air France serves the very best level of products as well as make a difference with optimum attentive customer service.

Beginning summer 2014 until 2016, the airline will gradually equip 44 of its Boeing 777 in its long-haul fleet with new seats in all cabins and with new inflight entertainment systems. In January 2014, it will unveil its future business offer.

Delays expected for klia2 as terminal fails fire, safety checks

FEBRUARY 05, 2014

Quote:
The opening of Malaysia's new budget terminal klia2 at Sepang is expected to be delayed after two-thirds of the building failed fire and safety standards after an inspection last week, said operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

According a statement from MAHB, Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd, the Sepang Municipal Council and the Fire and Rescue Department inspected the building in the last week of January and found that 65% of the main terminal did not comply with fire and safety standards.

There were cracks in a sewerage pipe outside the terminal, and parts of the road and drainage are not fit for use. The authorities' recommendation is essential for the issuance of the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC).

MAHB said in a statement that it has failed to receive the CCC for the klia2 terminal building from UEMC-Bina Puri, The Star reported today.

The main contractor, UEMC-Bina Puri Joint Venture, had earlier assured that it would hand over the terminal building or the CCC to the airport operator by January 31.

The newspaper reported that this potentially signals another delay in the opening of Asia’s biggest low-cost air terminal scheduled for May 2 after almost a year of delays.

MAHB said it would continue to engage with UEMC-Bina Puri on the next course of action in regard to the issuance of the CCC and the commencement of operational readiness and airport transfer or ORAT.

“All efforts are being taken to support UEMC-Bina Puri JV towards the completion of the terminal building to enable the opening of klia2 on May 2, 2014.’’

In a separate statement, UEM-Bina Puri confirmed it could not obtain the CCC by January 31 and claimed that this was due to an “unexpected issue” which occurred recently during a follow-up inspection.

“The JV partners have discussed and are working with MAHB, the authorities, consultants and architects to rectify the matter and rectification works will commence immediately. Public safety is the main priority, thus, we will ensure proper rectification works are
diligently carried out.

“At the same time, UEMC-Bina Puri JV will work together with MAHB on the next course of action in regard to the issuance of the CCC and the commencement of ORAT,’’ it added.

The Star said rectification works would take about three to four weeks to complete and even though the contractors are scheduling for another test to be conducted by the Fire and Rescue Depart¬ment in two weeks, any delay in getting the building certified fit will have an impact on
the opening of the airport.

“There have been so many promises and assurances given by the contractors, yet they failed to get the CCC. There are now concerns if they can even obtain the CCC by the end of February,’’ said an industry source.

The klia2 task force chaired by Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi met yesterday to deliberate on the reasons why the CCC was not obtained.

It is not known if the contractors will be penalised for failure to secure the CCC, the daily reported.

On January 13, Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein visited the airport and said klia2 would be ready on May 2.

“The project is now 98% complete and all parties are working hard 24/7 to meet the deadline,” Hishammuddin said at a press conference at the site.

He had said the project was expected to receive the CCC – given by the architects, engineers and building draughtsman registered with the Board of Architects Malaysia – by the end of the month.

klia2 has missed several deadlines for opening with the last one scheduled for April 30 before being moved to May 2. – February 5, 2014.
