Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is said to be in the preliminary stages of planning for another satellite building at the KL International Airport (KLIA).

The new satellite building will have more than 30 gates to cater for 25 million passengers. Initial estimates say it will cost nearly RM2bil.

The original plan for KLIA was to have four satellite buildings, each to cater for 25 million passengers, totalling 100 million passengers.

There may also be plans to dedicate one satellite building for the oneworld alliance members.

Looking at the KLIA 2, I am really impressed with its architectural design. But what about KLIA 1? Does it still looks as good as when it was opened in 1998?

The last time I was there at night, the MTB with its arched roofs seemed slightly darker than usual, probably due to the lighting and the subsequent shadows. The gate area and the rest of the complex still looks good tho

KLIA is a much sophisticated design compared to KLIA2. The canopy inspired ceiling will always remain unique and my favourite design just like like the Petronas Twin Towers that will remain timeless regardless how many taller buildings are built after it.

MAHB is planning another satellite terminal, and with it hopefully KLIA will undergo a midlife refurbishmemt to keep it fresh and new.

Thanks for your answer. The first time I went to KLIA was in 1999, when I traveled from Surabaya to Zurich, by MAS. It was not just the first time I visitied KLIA, but also the first time I flew with (then) brand new Boeing 777-200ER.

The last time was in 2004, when I worked in Malaysia. Back then it was already showing some sign of decay.

KLIA2: Biggest Airport-In-A-Mall

KUALA LUMPUR - The KLIA2 terminal, once opened to the public on May 9, will be the first of its kind airport in the world where shopping will take centre stage at a grand scale.

The terminal has the highest retail floor space composition of any airport globally.

“Based on concentration of retail per location, this is definitely highest in the world. Over 209 outlets are going to open this year. More shops are slated for phase two," Maybank IB aviation analyst Mohshin Aziz said.

In total, the combined retail space of at the new airport - [email protected] mall (32,516m²) and air-side (35,000 m²) - will make up about 13.6% of the total floor space.

It also overtakes the Changi Airport whose retail space of three of its terminals combined consists only 6.7% of its floor space.

“The airport-in-a-mall concept is a very big experiment but I believe it will succeed. However, it might require some time before it really kicks off. We are talking about half of Mid Valley Megamall in an airport. I expect there will be four to six months of quite period. As we move along the second year, things and stabilise and really hit off,” added Mohshin who toured the new airport last week.

Brands that will be taking tenancy at KLIA2 include Jaya Grocer, Giordano, MPH, Vincci, F.O.S, among many others.

Eighty-one lots for food and beverages and 26 lots for services will also be offered at the new airport.

KLIA2 is the country’s first hybrid airport, with the capacity to serve up to 45 million passengers annually. It was set to open in September 2011 but was delayed five times.

And apparently there will be a phase 2 for the KLIA2 retail area.

There will also be an outlet mall not far from the aiport that will boast many famous brands. MAHB the airport operator has a landbank hald the size of Kuala Lumpur territory and that include the land on which the Sepang F1 circuit is situated on. Retail and commercial developments will be part of the MAHB land masterplan. Its all for capitalistic gains.

I was told that from 2 May 2014, Lion Air will operate from KLIA 2. That means they will left KLIA 1.
