KLIA handles 20.3m passengers in first five months
27 JUNE 2014 @ 4:13 PM
http://www.nst.com.my/node/7084

SEPANG: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) handled a record 20.3 million passengers in the first five months of this year, an increase of 12 per cent compared with 18.2 million passengers recorded over the same period last year.

Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd (MAHB) managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said between January and May, the KLIA-Main Terminal Building (MTB) also registered passenger movement of 26.7 million.

"This significant growth in traffic performance was due to the rising demand for air travel, expansion of routes and increased frequencies by both full service and low-cost carriers.

"We have long surpassed the original target growth in our business direction document which was to record 60 million passengers, annually, by the year 2014," he said in his speech at KLIA's 16th anniversary here today.

He said the tragedy of the missing flight MH370 carrying 239 passengers and crew members, did not have a big impact on tourist arrivals to the country as the Ministry of Tourism actively conducted promotional activities for Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Badlisham said MAHB also revised the target to record over 10 million passengers by 2020 under its new five-year business direction.

Last year, MAHB recorded 79.6 million passengers at all its 39 airports in the country which included five international, 16 domestic and 18 short take off and landing ports, including 47.5 million passengers at KLIA.

"This is a growth of 19.1 per cent from that registered in 2012 for KLIA and the highest, year-on-year, increase since 2014," he added.

A total of 63 airlines operate from KLIA to more than one hundred destinations.

Last year, KLIA welcomed seven new airlines, namely Malindo Air, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Iraqi Airways, Regent Airways and Shanghai Airlines.-- Bernama

Hello anyone that may know - I have a 5 and a half hour stop over when flying from Hong Kong via KL then home to Australia in 2 weeks time. Is that enough time to leave the airport and take the train into the city centre and back? Im flying Malaysian Airlines the whole journey so Im hoping that when I check my luggage in at Hong Kong that it automatically goes onto the flight to Adelaide.

Thanks

5 hours should be enough for you to take the ERL express train to KL(27 minutes, costs RM70 two way ride) and take the Kelana Jaya line LRT to the KLCC station(RM2) for the Petronas Twin Towers for sight seeing and lucnh/dinner. From there if you have time to spare, take a taxi(Rm15-20)to the Kuala lumpur Tower to see a birdseye view of KL(ticket costs RM40) and later take a taxi(RM20-30) back to the KL Sentral station to take ERL back to KLIA.

ERL train between KL-KLIA

Kelana Jaya line to KLCC(Petronas tower station)

Advise
To get to KL tower from the Petronas towers i advise taking the premium taxis that are colored blue or the newer gold colored mini vans. Avoid the run down white and red taxis AT ALL COST unless youd like to bargain,as unfortunately, most of them are not honest and unreliable. At KL Tower there are premium taxis counter. The premium taxis cost more but are extremely reliable.

Take this, gold taxis are public taxis that use meter. Cheaper than blue premium taxis.

Avoid

If the taxi cost too much and you are on a budget, hanging out at the Petronas Towers is good enough as the place has a huge park to relax, with a huge mall with a cinema and lots of restaurants and food courts with many local and western food offerings.

KLCC Park near Petronas Tower

In addition, from the Petronas Towers there are purple buses. These are free city buses provided by the city hall that circle around Kuala Lumpur through other CBD clusters. Its a cheap way for you tour around Kl but it may be abot crowded as its free.

Free city bus service-GOKL City bus

Thank you for taking malaysia airlines.
