MAHB plans expansion at KLIA
By BILQIS BAHARI - June 15, 2017 @ 1:25pm
Quote:
MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is believed to have kick-started a new project to expand the size of the contact pier building at the main terminal of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang.

NST Business understands the project, which is still in its infancy stage, is needed to accommodate an additional capacity of 15 million to 20 million passengers per year.

“KLIA (Main Terminal) was currently handling passenger traffic that is already at its maximum numbers. There had been capacity issues during peak hours and it had created congestion at several areas in the airport, such as the immigration and check-in counters,” said sources yesterday.

The sources added that there would be more remote stands for aircraft and bus lounges to carry passengers to the airplanes.

Although the KLIA expansion plan is not a large-scale project, such as the construction of KLIA 2, it would ease the flow of passenger traffic, said sources.

The bigger contact pier area could accommodate traffic of up to a total of 50 million passengers annually.

Last year, the KLIA main terminal alone handled a total of 52.64 million passengers while from January to last month, its passenger traffic was recorded at 23.93 million.

The contact pier handles mostly domestic flights and some international flights but according to sources, the building would handle more international flights upon the completion of its expansion.

Most of the international flights are currently being handled at the satellite terminal.

At press time, MAHB did not reply to an email seeking comments on the KLIA main terminal expansion plan.

However, the airport operator made an open-tender announcement on Tuesday for “Group of Multi-Disciplinary Consultancy Services for the Proposed Terminal Upgrading and Expansion” at KLIA.

The announcement was made on MAHB’s official Instagram account and website.

In February, MAHB managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said it plans to spend over RM100 million to upgrade KLIA and the other 38 airports that it manages in Malaysia.

The upgrading works include the basic facilities at the airports as well as the airside.

MAHB use SAP software to digitalise airport operations
By AYISY YUSOF - August 10, 2017 @ 8:03pm

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is digitalising the local airports it manages under Airports 4.0 Vision.

It is designed to create an integrated seamless end-to-end journey for the customers, via the digital transformation journey, said MAHB chief strategy officer Azli Mohamed.

He added MAHB had established a big data analytics through an 18-month journey, while identifying the potential tools to enhance its operational efficiency and productivity.

"We partner with an application software provider, SAP as the fundamental in feeding in the next journey of Malaysia airports' digital transformation," he said at a press conference after the Asian Innovators Summit 2017 that features the Airports 4.0 Vision here today.

Azli said digitalisation on the Airports 4.0 Vision is highly integrated human capital environment with a solution that helps MAHB to manage big data and intelligence for efficiency its employees for better services towards customers.

"We have 39 airports that vary in terms of sizes and capabilities. The interpretation of Airports 4.0 Vision gives digital and integrated journey for customers and partners selectively," he said.

Azli said the digital transformation allows the airport operator to improve its operations processes, manage revenue leakages and assets management.

"Realistically, we currently focus on KLIA and klia2 first on the digitalisation. We are looking at all aspects to bring down the cost," he said.

He pointed out that the capacity of the KLIA is designed for 25 million passengers, while klia2 is designed for 45 million passengers.

"KLIA is at its maximum capacity. We are in talks with the government on the expansion plan, although it will take some time.

"The only way to address the growth is through automation and technology. This is where technology comes into place," he said.

He said the transformation is part of MAHB's business plan for runway to success 2020, which had started two years ago.

"Airports 4.0 Vision is one of the enabler in the region. But it is all about addressing the four pillars - to maximise Kuala Lumpur as a hub, creation of a total airport experience, maximise the potential of Aeropolis and MAHB's international expansion beyond its current involvement in Hyderabad and Turkey," he said.

MAHB To Introduce Airside Transfer At KLIA, klia2 Next Year
Last update: 11/10/2017

Quote:
SEPANG, Oct 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will introduce the 'airside transfer check-in service' at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and klia2 from next year.

Managing Director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said passengers with other onward international destinations would no longer be required to check out their baggage at the main terminal where they arrive.

"The service will be introduced at the KLIA and klia2 as both airports are main transit locations for passengers leaving for other countries or destinations.

"More interestingly, passengers and their respective baggage will also be transferred free between both terminals," he added.

He told reporters this after attending the launch of the 70 years of establishment of the Airport Fire and Rescue Services (AFRS) here today.....

KUALA LUMPUR: Works on the new Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control Centre (KL ATCC) at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sepang, is on track to be completed by March 2019. Upon completion, the new KL ATCC will feature a new air traffic management system that is capable of handling an increasing number of aircraft traffic at KLIA and Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).

Advanced Air Traffic Systems (M) Sdn Bhd (AAT), a company that provides maintenance and integrated logistics support services for air traffic control (ATC) radar and systems, is the main contractor for the RM647.06 million project. Officials from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) said AAT was selected as the main contractor when the project was opened to bidders in April last year through the local open tender.

KLIA is first in the region to install FOD detection system
By AYISY YUSOF - January 11, 2018 @ 8:11am
Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has been selected to test the effectiveness of radio over fibre foreign object debris (FOD) detection system at Runway 2.

The FOD detection system, specifically called Linear-Cell Radar over Fibre FOD detection system, worth US$25 million (RM100 million), is a tripartite collaborative effort by Hitachi Kokusai Electric (HiKE), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and MAHB.

The field trial is fully funded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan, commencing this month over a three-year period until December 2020.

“KLIA, being the first airport in the world other than Narita International Airport, has embarked on this testing of radio over fibre FOD detection system at Runway 2,” MAHB managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said in a statement yesterday.

The selection was made due to KLIA’s geographical suitability with its varied tropical weather in testing the robustness of the system.

With this, Badlisham said the company would continue to embrace advanced aviation technology, making it noticeable on the map as an aviation technology innovator.

"KLIA is among the world’s busiest airports with an average aircraft movement of 32,000 monthly. We are also the first airport in the region to have a three-independent runway system with runway length of four-km,” he added.

Badlisham said the advanced and first in the world radio over fibre technology would enhance the safety and surveillance measures of the KLIA’s runway, thus strengthening its position as regional hub.

The technology transfer initiative would enhance Malaysian innovativeness as it will be the first system in Malaysia to use radio frequency within the 90GHz range.

The advantages of the system include its low operational cost, low emission of radio waves, and most importantly a highly scalable system for busy airports.

Highly accurate and fast, the system is able to detect any FOD within the range of 500 meters in 10 seconds by using the Millimeter Wave Radar (MMW) over optical fibre technology.

High resolution cameras are used to ensure high quality images.

It also enables real-time data collection thus expediting the investigation process in identifying FOD sources and facilitating fast runway clearing process.

UTM vice chancellor Professor Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar said the university hopes to enhance the skills and technology expertise of the nation through this synergistic global engagement.

“This Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) can act as the catalyst for enhanced and sustained research and design (R&D) based on first-class research activities, resulting in excellent and impactful outputs,” he said.

He added the MoC would not only contribute towards the growth and development of the linear cell radar technology, but also nurture home-grown experts and researchers.
