KLIA shopping campaign a 'runway' success
2009/09/24
http://streets.nst.com.my/Current_Ne...cle/index_html

One of the looks put together by the
contestants of the ‘iStyle KLIA’ competition

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Shopping Campaign 2008/2009 took off and landed with much style.

The shopping campaign ended with a fashion showcase -- the first ever organised by Malaysia Airports. The showcase, called "iStyle KLIA", was a styling competition, in which participants were challenged to pull together a look using fashion products available at KLIA.

Six teams comprising two members each were selected from the 33 entries. The contestants were young designers studying at fashion and design institutions in Klang Valley.

Among the institutions represetned were Universiti Teknologi Mara (Uitm), Raffles Design Institute and PJ College of Art and Design.

The first heats was held on July 30 and for each subsequent week after that, participants were required to create the best ensemble, according to the given theme.

The theme for the first heats was "Casual Chic", for which participants had to create practical yet smart outfits.

The second heats was "Exotic Exquisite". Strong and bold prints had to be matched with heavy accessories.

The third and final Hheat carried the theme "After 7", which challenged the contestants to transform office attire into stylish party and dinner wear.

Each team's ensemble was evaluated at the end of the weekly heats.

On the final night, before the winners were announced, a catwalk showcasing the ensembles created by all six teams throughout the competition was held before the winning team was announced.

The winner of iStyle KLIA was Team Noir from Raffles Design Institute.

Shock was clearly visible on the faces of team members Silas Liew Chuan Min, 25, and Jonathan Liang Yow Shuih, 21, when their names were announced.

"We had so many ideas for each different theme but we are glad that the looks we finally presented for the heats were adjudged the best," said Liew.

iStyle KLIA saw the involvement of some of Malaysia's fashion icons like Datuk Tom Abang Saufi and Khoon Hooi. Alex Eu was the event's fashion consultant and chief judge.

Tan Sri Datuk Dr Aris Othman, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's chairman, said the competition provided a great opportunity to showcase the stylish apparel and accessories available at KLIA.

Three shopping contests with prizes worth a total of RM2.7 million were held in conjunction with the shopping campaign, which ran from Aug 26 last year to June 11.

The grand prize of the KLIA Shopping Campaign 2008/2009 -- a Lexus GS300 worth RM420,000 -- was won by Faisal Affendie from Sarawak. His sister, Filzah Affendie, was present to receive the prize on his behalf.

The rise of SkyPark Subang Terminal
2009/09/29 DAWN CHAN

Subang SkyPark Sdn Bhd executive director Tan Sri Ravindran Menon says
the airport will handle up to 2.5 million passengers annually by the year end.

Quote:
Subang returns to the world map of aviation in a big way with the rising popularity of its ‘lifestyle airport’. DAWN CHAN makes a stop there to check out its food outlets, service facilities and all that jazz
SUBANG JAYA: A self-described "lifestyle airport", SkyPark Subang Terminal is fast gaining popularity among the budget-savvy and corporate travellers.

Subang SkyPark Sdn Bhd executive director, Tan Sri Ravindran Menon, was proud to show off the RM40 million facility that is home to Berjaya Air and Firefly. Both airlines make an average of 60 local and regional flights a day from the airport.

The 13,936sq m terminal houses a panel of popular food and beverage outlets like Starbucks, Big Apple Donuts and Coffee, Sakura Cuisine Cafe, Kapitan Kopitiam and 1901 Hotdogs. There is also an ice cream bar, an Italian pizza restaurant and a sports bar.

For recreation, there are three reflexology and fish spas located at the main lobby and domestic and international departure halls.

Ravindran said the airport's unique attraction is its jazz band, which performs six evenings a week at the lobby of the arrival hall.

"There is no other airport in Malaysia that has this feature for passengers and visitors to enjoy.

"Another feature SkyPark Subang Terminal boasts is valet parking services.

"Due to its strategic location and proximity to the city, we believe the airport will put Subang back on the world map of aviation in an even bigger way," he said.

He added that by the end of the year, the airport is expected to handle 2.5 million passengers per year, with more flights to popular destinations.

SkyPark Subang Terminal has 13 check-in counters and separate departure and arrival halls for international and domestic travellers. There are also three immigration counters for inbound and outbound flights.

Ravindran added that four designated lanes were created to minimise traffic congestion at the entry of the terminal. One lane each is dedicated to passenger drop-off and pick-up; taxis and valet parking; coach and delivery services; and special access for corporate aviation.

Across the road from the SkyPark Subang Terminal is a 750-bay open air parking lot which is directly connected to the two-storey terminal by an overhead pedestrian bridge.

It also has disabled-friendly features with two parking bays for the disabled at the main entrance and a lift to reach the upper floor.

Those flying in private jets have numerous facilities to enjoy, including a lounge and VVIP conference room for those wishing to conduct business meetings.

Pilots and crew members have access to facilities like a gym, kitchen, lounge and bathrooms.

Two banks, Maybank and CIMB, have opened a branch each at the terminal for the convenience of travellers.

There are a courier service, a mini emporium called D'Trend Avenue, a moneychanger, luggage deposit counters, duty-free section and magazine and souvenir shops.

Air India pilots' strike disrupts Chennai-KL flights
Published: Sunday September 27, 2009 MYT 12:44:00 PM

CHENNAI: Air operations at several Indian airports were once again thrown into disarray after nearly 150 disgruntled Air India pilots refused to fly and went on "sick leave" on Saturday.

The pilots, mostly in the non-unionised executive category, were unhappy over the cash-strapped Air India management's decision to slash their productivity-linked incentives by 50-70% last Wednesday, a move that would drastically reduce their take-home pay by at least 50%.

As of Sunday morning, at least 20 domestic and international flights were either cancelled or delayed.

The carrier's flight from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur, scheduled to depart at 2am Sunday was cancelled and another from Chennai to Singapore, scheduled for 12.45am Sunday, was also disrupted.

"All Air India passengers were accommodated on Air India Express flight which left Kuala Lumpur at 2.30am. It is too early to say about tomorrow morning's flight to Kuala Lumpur.

"Some talks have been initiated and we hope it will come under control," a Chennai-based senior Air India official said Sunday.

Air India, and its low-cost subsidiary Air India Express, connects to 25 destinations worldwide.

The new labour agitation comes barely two weeks after about 400 Jet Airways pilots went on a mass "sick leave" for days, which almost crippled the airline's domestic and international operations.

Jet Airways' pilots wanted the management to reinstate two of their colleagues who were sacked by the airline for trying to establish a union.

The dispute was settled after the airline agreed to re-employ them and drop all charges against pilots who went on strike. - Bernama

Air Astana to start service to KL on Oct 31
Published: 2009/10/01

AIR Astana, the flag carrier of Kazakhstan, will expand its Asian network with the launch of services from Almaty to Kuala Lumpur beginning October 31 2009.

The weekly flight will be operated every Saturday with a Boeing 767 aircraft, with a flight time of eight hours, the airline said in a statement yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur will become Air Astana's seventh destination in Asia and the Gulf, with existing services between Almaty and Bangkok, Beijing, New Delhi, Dubai, Seoul and Urumqi.

Return fares on the Kuala Lumpur-Almaty route start at RM2,600 plus tax for an economy class seat to RM6,100 plus tax for business class seat.

Malaysians travelling to Kazakhstan can obtain a visit or business visa by simply presenting a letter of sponsorship from the host organisation or a letter of invitation plus a tour itinerary at the Kazakhstan embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the airline said.

"With both trade and tourism steadily growing between Kazakhstan and Malaysia, Air Astana is looking forward to launching the first direct air service between the two countries," said the airline's president, Peter Foster. - Bernama

MAHB to invest big in retail services
Published: 2009/10/09

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is planning a substantial investment to beef up its retail shopping and services to capture the higher revenue potential.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman, said a major renovation of its satellite building at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), is nearing completion.

According to Aris, MAHB will now focus on renovations to the main terminal building at the KLIA to enhance and modernise the retail facilities there.

"We realise we cannot rely on airport charges alone as it tends to remain stagnant or low, due to the competitiveness of many airports around the world," he said during the graduation ceremony of 194 airport security staff in Sepang today.

Aris said with the completion of the new low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) by the fourth quarter of 2011, a more enhanced shopping experience would be available.

Works on the new LCCT, he said, will commence next month and the total construction cost is RM2 billion.

He also said there would be no compromise in terms of airport security, despite the economic slowdown.

Aris highlighted that the MAHB had 2,500 security personnel and this number would be increased based on future requirements.

"As airports are the main gateway into the country, MAHB takes security issues seriously.

"We also work closely with the police on this matter," he added.

Selangor chief police officer (CPO) Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said criminal activities such as drug smuggling at the KLIA is well within control as the police force worked closely with foreign agencies on enforcement. -- Bernama

Malaysia Airports raises forecast for passenger traffic
Wednesday October 21, 2009 By IZWAN IDRIS

Quote:
It sees 3% to 4% growth this year on uptrend in tourist arrivals
SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has raised its full-year forecast for passenger traffic at all the airports it operates in the country to a positive growth of between 3% and 4% this year compared with 2008, said managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad.

It had earlier projected flat growth this year from the 47.45 million travellers it recorded in 2008.

Bashir said there had been a pick-up in the number of arrivals in recent months, and he expected the trend to continue for the rest of the year.

The improved outlook was on the back of 4.4% increase in tourist arrivals recorded during the first eight months of the year, official figures from the Tourism Ministry showed.

Bashir also said Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s flag carrier, would start its service from KL International Airport (KLIA) on Oct 31, while two other airlines may come in by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, MAHB is sticking to its target to open the new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) by September 2011.

The call for tenders to build the new LCCT – which may cost as much as RM2bil – was launched on Monday and will close on Nov 9, according to notices published in local newspapers on Monday.

It was previously reported that the new LCCT would have an initial capacity to handle 30 million passengers per year, and could be expanded to cater for up to 45 million travellers.

To boost the appeal of airports under its management, MAHB had recently obtained safety management system (SMS) certifications for five international airports in Malaysia.

“The SMS certification is a testimony of our initiatives to ensure the highest level of safety at our airports and to fully comply with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety management programme,” Bashir said at the ceremony to receive the certification from the Department of Civil Aviation for KLIA, Penang International Airport, Langkawi International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Kuching International Airport.

The five airports were the first in Asia to receive the certification.

Bashir said next in the company’s pipeline was to have five domestic airports, in Bintulu, Tawau, Miri, Sibu and Terengganu, certified in 2010.

Last year, ICAO recommended that all international airports obtained the SMS certification.

Najib: Skypark Subang Can Help Transform Nation To High-income Economy
October 28, 2009 21:46 PM

PETALING JAYA, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- The SkyPark Subang Terminal here can become a strategic city aviation hub and play a role in helping to transform the nation into a high-income driven economy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Wednesday.

He said he was confident that the terminal, refurbished from the old Subang airport, would become an important national and regional hub and generate a multiplier economy impact for locals.

Describing the new terminal as exciting and cool, Najib said it had the right factors -- connectivity, convenience and costs -- to give it the competitive edge.

He said the project was also proof that public-private partnership can be successful ventures.

"I had some doubt with the proposal when it was first presented to me when I was the chairman for the high-impact investment committee, but somehow I thought it was good too," he added.

The prime minister said he was also impressed that the RM40 million makeover was completed in just 13 months and the good track record would be an advantage for Malaysia to attract more quality foreign investments.

He also expressed confidence that SkyPark would easily achieve its target of two million passengers annually.

Cafes, boutiques, bookshops, gift shops have all added to the lively atmosphere of Skypark Subang which was formerly Terminal Three of the previous Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport.

Berjaya Air, Malaysia Airlines-owned Firefly and private jets operate from this airport now.

SkyPark a model airport, says Najib
Thursday October 29, 2009

Sri Bashir Ahmad (left), Francis Hiew (third from left), Mida director-general
Datuk Jalilah Baba (second from right) and Datuk Mustapa Mohamed (right).

PETALING JAYA: After a RM40mil facelift and a name change to SkyPark, Subang Terminal is now a model airport with impressive facilities to offer local and corporate travellers.

The refurbished former Terminal 3, which was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday, is a picture of a luxury airport with operations of its services and shops in full swing. Also present was Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

Najib said he was especially pleased with the transformation because he had supported the project when he chaired the Cabinet Committee on investments.

“I have to confess I had some doubts that the vision could be translated into a reality. But somehow I thought it would be good for the country. Today, it has become a reality,” he said.

“Terminal 3 has been transformed into something quite cool, as the youngsters would say.”

Najib expressed confidence that SkyPark, which has now surpassed the 500,000 passengers mark, would be able to achieve its annual target of two million travellers and emerge as a regional hub.

He said it had the three important prerequisites of a successful airport – connectivity, convenience and cost. “The 3Cs are embodied in Subang because it is close to the city centre and easily accessible, it has connectivity via Firefly and the cost of using the terminal is much less than the KLIA.”

Earlier, Najib launched Spirit AeroSystems Malaysia Sdn Bhd, an aerospace manufacturing and design facility near the terminal.

The facility, completed within 13 months, will initially produce composite sub-assemblies for Airbus single-aisle aircraft and assemblies for the latest state-of-the-art Airbus aircraft A350 XWB.
