KLIA's Satellite Retail Project To Break Even In Two Years - MAHB
December 17, 2009 23:19 PM

SEPANG, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) expects the satellite retail optimisation project (SROP) at KL International Airport to break even in two years.

Managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid said MAHB allocated RM50 million on SROP in May 2008 to transform the airport beyond just its physical appearance by creating more retail space.

"Through this programme we have increased retail space to almost 50 per cent," he told reporters after the launch of the newly completed SROP by MAHB chairman Tan Sri Dr Aris Othman at the airport here on Thursday.

"We hope with the improvement of the world economy and more people travelling, the average spending per person will increase and boost commercial revenue," Bashir said.

Currently, MAHB earned about RM30 million from commercial activities at the airport, he said.

Bashir said the company was also in the process of upgrading retail space in its three other airports -- Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Kuching International Airport and Penang International Airport.

"We hope to further strengthen the performance of non-aeronautical revenue to 65 per cent from 50 per cent over the next three years.

"We thought it's a good idea for us to have renovation on all the existing shops and rearrange the location according to the lifestyle of each area," he said.

For the first nine months of this year, MAHB's non-aeronautical revenue rose to RM592.434 million from RM522.264 million in the same period last year, while aeronautical revenue increased to RM564.857 million from RM488.322 million.

MAHB also has kick-started a new campaign to promote shopping at KL International Airport and the Low Cost Carrier Terminal.

"We are also extending this new shopping campaign to our other international airports in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Penang," Bashir said.

ATR opens logistic support centre in KLIA
Published: 2009/12/19

Regional aircraft constructor ATR has opened a logistic support centre in the free trade zone of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The support centre will be available to its operators in the Asia Pacific region who have contracted a global maintenance agreement (GMA), it said in a statement today.

DHL Support Chain, a global logistics company, will manage the centre within the framework of a global contract signed with ATR.

Apart from Malaysia, ATR has logistic support centres in Paris, Miami, Auckland and Singapore.

With the new centre, ATR said it would continue to reinforce its presence in Southeast Asia after the opening of a training centre last year, also based in Malaysia.

"The opening of a new centre in Malaysia is within our philosophy of getting as close as possible to our customers in order to be able to respond to their requirements in the shortest time," said Jean-Pierre Cousserans, the senior vice president of ATR Customer Services.

Close to 90 ATR aircraft are being operated by airlines of Southeast Asia, a region where ATR has experienced strong growth during the last few years.

Headquartered in Toulouse, France, ATR is the world leader in the 50 to 74-seat turboprop market. It is a joint venture between the Alenia Aeronautica(Finmeccanica Group) and EADS.

In 2008, ATR recorded a turnover of US$1.3 billion. -- Bernama

PJI targets up to RM500mil job at LCCT Terminal
By AU KA-SHING 23 Dec 2009

PETALING JAYA: PJI Holdings Bhd is eyeing a contract to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services worth RM400mil to RM500mil at the new LCCT Terminal.

It plans to fund the job through private finance initiatives (PFIs), a method that provides private funding for partnerships between the public and private sectors.

“The total cost of the new LCCT Terminal will be around RM2bil as announced by the Government,” said deputy CEO Lim Chong Ling at the company’s AGM.

“Next year, we will also explore water-related projects.”

Lim said PJI was waiting for details of the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) as it saw many opportunities in relation to its core business of electrical and mechanical engineering services.

“Also, the government is going more into financing public projects through PFIs. PJI will work with the Government through Economic Planning Unit or the Treasury.”

He added that the company had tendered for jobs worth RM500mil since June, mainly in mechanical and electrical engineering services and water infrastructure.

PJI now has an orderbook of about RM150mil and hopes to add RM150mil to RM200mil by June 2010.

Gadang sends in RM300m bid for LCCT runway job
By Sharen Kaur Published: 2010/01/05

GADANG Holdings Bhd (9261) has submitted a RM300 million bid to construct a 4km long runway for the RM2 billion low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) project in Sepang, Selangor.

Managing director Tan Sri Kok Onn told Business Times that the firm expects to know within the next two weeks if it is successful in the tender.

Kok also said Gadang has submitted a bid to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to construct the terminal building at the new LCCT for about RM1 billion.

"We lost out to WCT for the first package but that did not deter us from bidding for the remaining packages.
WCT Bhd clinched the first package, worth around RM363 million, from MAHB in December last year for works that include site preparation, earthworks and main drainage.

"While the bids have become very competitive, we hope to get a slice of the cake based on our track record," Kok said.

The new LCCT, located 1.5km from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, is scheduled to be completed by third quarter of 2011.

It is expected to cater to 30 million passengers yearly, with capacity for up to 45 million passengers a year.

The LCCT is the single largest private finance initiative building project under the infrastructure allocation of the second stimulus package.

Other companies which have submitted bids for the project are IJM Corp Bhd, Ireka Corp Bhd, Fajarbaru Builder Group Bhd, Bina Puri Holdings Bhd, Sunway Holdings Bhd and Mudajaya Group Bhd.

PJI Holdings Bhd, meanwhile is keen to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services for RM500 million.

Gadang gets work on new LCCT
By Sharen Kaur Published: 2010/01/13

Gadang beat seven companies, including WCT and Sunway, for the job to build a runway and taxiways for the RM2 billion new low-cost carrier terminal in Sepang

Construction company Gadang Holdings Bhd (9261) has won a RM291 million contract to build a runway and taxiways for the RM2 billion new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang, Selangor.

The contract includes site preparation, earthworks and main drainage for the 4km Runway 3.

Gadang beat seven companies, including WCT Bhd and Sunway Holdings Bhd, for the job.

It told Bursa Malaysia yesterday that it would start work next month and complete it by December.

Gadang expects the contract to contribute positively to its earnings and net assets in financial years ending May 31 2010 and 2011.

"This is a fast-track contract. We are proud to win it after losing out on an earlier bid," Gadang managing director Tan Sri Kok Onn told Business Times.

It is the second contract awarded by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) under the RM2 billion project.

Last month, the airport operator awarded WCT a RM363 million contract for works that include site preparation, earthworks and main drainage.

A third contract to build the main terminal building is in the tender stage.

Kok said Gadang was working to submit a bid for the third contract, worth some RM1.2 billion. The job involves design, construction, testing, commissioning and maintaining the main terminal building, skybridge and piers.

The new LCCT is the single largest private finance initiative building project under the infrastructure allocation of the second stimulus package.

Other companies which submitted bids for various packages were IJM Corp Bhd, Ireka Corp Bhd, Fajarbaru Builder Group Bhd, Bina Puri Holdings Bhd and Mudajaya Group Bhd.

PJI Holdings Bhd plans to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services for RM500 million.

The new LCCT will be 1.5km away from KLIA's main terminal compared with 20km for the existing LCCT.

It will be linked to KLIA's main terminal building via the Express Rail Link.

The new LCCT, scheduled to be completed by the third quarter of next year, will cater for 30 million passengers a year, with potential to expand capacity to handle 45 million passengers.
