The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain service will be closed today until March 15 next year to allow for maintenance and modification work on the two trains.

The closure is necessary to facilitate the KLIA Spurline expansion project, modification of the existing lines and to allow the commissioning of one additional three-vehicle Aerotrain.

It will also enable the construction of a crossover switch between the two existing guide-ways. The Spurline is a branch line from the existing guide-way, connecting to the new Operation, Maintenance and Storage Facility (OMSF) building, which is still under construction.

Temporary measure: The Aerotrain station at both the
Satellite Building and Contact Pier will be closed until March 15.

The new OMSF will facilitate the maintenance of the Aerotrains and accommodate overhaul work without any disruption to operations once completed.

It will also address the future needs of the train system, connecting Satellite A terminal to the planned Satellite B terminal.

KLIA will have a dedicated off-line Aerotrain maintenance and storage facility, enabling repair work on the Aerotrain to be performed without any interruption to the service.

Now, the maintenance is undertaken at the Satellite A terminal station.

During the shutdown period, shuttle buses will be stationed round the clock to ensure smooth transfer of passengers between the Satellite building and the Contact Pier.

Passengers will take 10 minutes to travel from one building to the other using the bus service compared with four minutes by Aerotrain.

The aerotrain has been in service for 12 years and clocked more than two million kilometres and it was time for a major overhaul.

KLIA has arranged 16 buses to ferry passengers from the main building to the satellite building and airport authorities have also stationed personnel to guide passengers to the shuttle bus lounge for departing passengers.

The bus lounge is located at the ground level of the Contact Pier, where the shuttle service will transfer passengers to Gate C11 to proceed to their boarding gates.

For arriving passengers, they will proceed to Gate C5 of the satellite building where the shuttle service will transport them to the Contact Pier for Immigration clearance and baggage reclamation.

Aerotrains at KLIA to resume ops on Mar 23
Published: 2010/03/14
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...cle/index_html

The Aerotrains connecting the main terminal and satellite buildings at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will be fully operational on March 23.

The construction of the new spurline connecting the Operation Maintenance and Services Facility (OMSF), the crossover switch between the existing tracks and the delivery of the new three-car Aerotrains, will be completed as scheduled on March 15.

Malaysia Airports said in a statement today that the Aerotrains are currently operating on a dry run basis.

As an additional precautionary measure before the Aerotrains are made available for public use, Malaysia Airports has decided to extend the dry runs until March 22, to ensure and enhance the safety of operations.

It said the Aerotrains could be made available earlier to the public prior to March 23, should the dry runs prove to be satisfactory. - Bernama

By Hamisah Hamid Published: 2008/08/25 BusinessTimes

MALAYSIA Airports (Niaga) Sdn Bhd (Eraman), the retail arm of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), expects its soon-to-be launched lifestyle shopping mall at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to contribute 20 per cent to its business next year.

Eraman head of merchandising division (core products) Elina Jamaluddin said the company's revenue from core products such as duty-free items, perfumes, cosmetics and convenience shops, have been growing double-digit over the years.

"The opening of the mall at the KLIA contact pier is expected to boost the revenue further. For this year we can't really gauge, but we anticipate it to contribute at least 20 per cent to Eraman's business next year," she told Business Times in an interview in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Eraman, with retail outlets spread over the KLIA, Kuching International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Labuan Airport and Low Cost Carrier Terminal, registered RM289 million revenue last year. This represents 20 per cent of the MAHB group revenue of RM1.38 billion.

Elina said the Contact Pier International - a walkthrough mall that stretches along the 30,000 sq ft contact pier area of the KLIA - is expected to be operational in later part of October this year.

The open concept shopping mall, which is located near the aerotrain station and the area where the regional and international travellers converge, blends contemporary design and fixtures with the batik colours, hues and motifs as the main decorative element.

Besides food and beverages, fashion apparels, accessories, timepieces and complementary services, other highlights at the lifestyle mall include "Kidz Smart Tunnel", that would offer duty-free items targeted at junior travellers.

"We are bringing retail to the next level. No airport in the world has a lifestyle approach," she said, adding that airports in general do not have the liberty of space for such retail concept.

According to Elina, for certain international brands that will be featured at the mall, the lifestyle concept is the first for them, either in Asia Pacific or globally.

For instance, the World of Cadbury, for the first time, will showcase the Cadbury brand stories and timeline that traces the brand since the early 1900s. Hershey's concept shop, meanwhile, will be the first one outside the US that will feature Hershey's history wall showing actual scenes of Hershey Town in Pennsylvania, the home of the Hershey Company.

On the recent escalating oil prices, Elina said it has not significantly impacted Eraman's sales growth so far. As at June this year, the company was still on track to meet its forecast.

"To mitigate any downside, we will continue to improve our offerings. Airport retailing is unique and a niche market as travellers generally buy on impulse and for Asians, the general purchasing trend is mainly for giftings," she said.

Eraman always ensures that its product offerings meet customers' preference and comprise value packs and special travel retail exclusives which are only available at its airport outlets, she added.
Eraman perkfor riders of KLIA Ekspres

Eraman Malaysia, the retail arm of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, expects a big jump in revenue to RM511 million this year.

This will be driven mainly by the opening of new outlets, marketing collaboration and introduction of an incentive scheme for its sales advisers.

Eraman chalked up RM413 million sales from its 43 outlets nationwide last year, general manager Umar Bustaman said.

"Of this, almost 85 per cent of the sales generated from the outlets at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang)," he added.

In KLIA alone, there are 21 Eraman outlets located at the main terminal building, Low-Cost Carrier Terminal, satellite building and contact piers.

Umar was speaking to reporters after the official launch of Eraman-KLIA Ekspres marketing collaboration at KLIA yesterday.

Umar said the company plans to open seven new outlets this year, starting with three in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. There will also be new outlets in Kuching, Langkawi, and KLIA. The latter outlet will be sited at the contact pier of the main terminal building.

"Some of the new outlets are expected to operate at the earliest in June or July," he said.

Investments on the new outlets would be manageable as the company needs to spend mostly on renovation only.

"Currently, most of the plans already at the tender stage. By April, we expect to start renovation works on some of the new outlets," Umar said.

Eraman expects a 10 per cent increase in revenue from its pact with Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) through the latter's train service, KLIA Ekspres.

Under the pact, the commuters can use their single KLIA Ekspres ticket to get a 10 per cent discount whenever they spend a minimum of RM350 at any participating Eraman outlet.

The promotion began on March 1 and runs until September 30.

Eraman also plans to reward its retail advisers nationwide as part of its efforts to boost sales.

"The retail advisers will be rewarded according to their sales. Hopefully, we will be able to implement the scheme by April," Umar said.

Meanwhile, ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor said it is banking on the collaboration to meet its target of handling some two million KLIA Ekspres riders.

"KLIA Ekspres moves about 1.6 million travellers a year between the airport and the city. Our passengers will pass through KLIA, and we hope that with this offer, we have given them that extra reason to head straight for Eraman's outlets to shop," she said.

Qatar Airways to fly to two more destinations
Saturday March 26, 2011
http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...56&sec=central

New routes:
Qatar Airways will be flying to Brussels and Stuttgart.

FLYING twice daily from Kuala Lumpur, Qatar Airways has added two more destinations to their growing network — Brussels and Stuttgart, via Doha.

An extra three weekly services from Kuala Lumpur will be added from tomorrow onwards, connecting the Malaysian capital to Doha twice a day, marking the airline’s 10th year of operations in Malaysia.

As one of the airline’s most popular and oldest routes in South-East Asia, the airline’s Kuala Lumpur route has continually grown since the airline launched its services in 2001.

Qatar Airways launched scheduled flights to Europe’s capital city of Brussels in January and Stuttgart in March, establishing the airline’s 98th and 99th international destination and marking the Gulf carrier’s third new European route to open in as many weeks. Qatar Airways began operating flights to both Bucharest and Budapest from its Doha hub in January.

“By adding Brussels to the Qatar Airways network, it has opened up a myriad of connections through other hubs in Doha to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific regions.

These new additions also enhance the airline’s presence in Brussels further as demand for the service grows and promises an increased capacity by the end of the year,” said Qatar Airways chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker.

KLIA wins best airport immigration service award
Posted on April 13, 2011, Wednesday
http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=119561

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) bagged the World’s Best Airport Immigration Service award at the Skytrax 2011 World Airport Awards in Copenhagen, Denmark recently.

KLIA also retained its place among the world’s top 10 airports with a ninth place finish at the same event.

Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd, the operator of the KLIA, said in a statement yesterday the win is a reflection of the high service level for immigration formalities at the airport.

“From the feedback received, this is not only in terms of overall service efficiency, but also the quality and courtesy of the individual staff members,” it added.

The World Airport Awards are based on survey results from 11.38 million questionnaires completed by over 100 different nationalities of airline passengers, covering more than 240 airports worldwide. — Bernama
