Parvathy Omnakuttan to set the ramp on fire at the Kochi International Fashion Week

His philosophy is 'less is more.' Hari Anand, the host designer for the Kochi International Fashion Week, is all set to revolutionise the fashion scene in Kerala.

Hari Anand will showcase his 'Resort wear' collection for the Fashion Week starting on Friday at hotel Casino in Willingdon Island. Thirty-five models will walk the ramp for him and the show-stopper is none other than Miss India-Universe and actor Parvathy Omanakuttan. Hari, a product of JD Institute of Fashion, Mumbai, has focussed on classy and sophisticated cuts and designs. He is known for his unique print lines with stories and gossips from a Canadian cartoonist on the fabric. His ensembles are known for their immaculate finish, modish cuts, and high-end fashion details. Every year he launches new collections based on themes like resort/mother earth, alphabets, karma, sex and the city etc.

Upholding an experience of more than 18 years in the fashion industry, Hari has done over more than eight shows all over India, with three shows every year for the Fashion TV. He outlines his designs based on what is hitting the trend in the market. He plays with stories and sensuality when it comes to designing attires.

Hari believes that beauty lies within. "Just give it a nudge to bring it forth," says Hari. Being an experimental and artistic person by birth, he plays with black and white colors and fabrics such as georgette, lycra, satin, metallic chiffon and linen.

Hari's 35 designer resort wear for the KIFW 2011 will be exhibited to the audience during the fashion week.

Parvathy Omanakuttan, Arjan Bajwa, Natasha Suri, Shahwar Aliset the ramp on fire with scintillating designer wear at the Kochi International Fashion Week

Despite the hustle and bustle, Kerala's first ever international fashion week, the Kochi International Fashion Week (KIFW) took off in full zeal with the opening show by James Ferreira from Mumbai. Model turned actor, Arjan Bajwa and Miss India 2006, Natasha Suri were the show stoppers for the show, which was sponsored by The Man magazine.

Ferreira launched his collection of men's casual and party line, James Men. The models walked the runway in contemporary kurtas, innovative shirts, t-shirts with tongue in cheek slogans, sexy shorts, baggy bermudas and trousers. James said that today the fashion industry's ratio of female models to male models is skewed. "It is high time more male models are brought into the fashion scene and I am on a mission to achieve this."

James Ferreira's show was followed by that of host designer, Hari Anand from Kochi, whose collection displayed resort wear based on the theme, 'Earth.' Simple designs with subtle colours defined his beautifully woven ensembles. Miss India Universe, Parvathy Omanakuttan was the show stopper for the show. Other celebrity models and actors like Ranjani Haridas, Kailash, Mukta, Shawar Ali and Rajeev Pillai also walked the ramp. The celebrity models said they were honoured to walk the ramp for the Kochi based designer and considered the show to be a reunion of old friends.

When asked about her take on the outcome of this fashion week in Kerala, Parvathy Omanakuttan responded, "Seeing the crowd it is pretty evident that the masses in Kerala will pick up the fashion statements very soon. The way women and men in Kerala dress up today leaves me in no doubt that Kerala will soon pep up its fashion quotient."

The first day of KIFW drew its curtain with Mumbai based designer Archana Kocchar's collection on Artistic Rhapsody, where she presented an exquisite line of cocktail ensemble in scarlet, ivory and ebony. The show was sponsored by Giantti.

The second day of KIFW will kick off with Jules Idi Amin-Xylo Show, followed by Jattin Kocchar from Delhi, Vivek Karunakaran from Chennai and Riyaz Gangji-Videocon Show. Celebrities Shwetha Menon and Sonali Shegal will walk the ramp for Riyaz Gangji and Jules Idi Amin respectively.

The curtains for the fashion week would close down on August7 with shows by Megha Grover from Mumbai, Lawman Pg3, Arun Singh from Jaipur, and Sanjana Jon from New York. The brand ambassador for the KIFW, Mamta Mohandas will walk the ramp for Arun Singh, while Kangana Ranaut and Sushasini Maniratnam will walk the runway for Lawman Pg3 and Sanjana Jon respectively.

KIFW is believed to unwind the epic of style and panache in Kerala.

The day two at the Kochi International Fashion Week (KIFW) saw more people making a beeline for Kerala's first international fashion event. It is proof enough that there are souls out here in Kerala who did love to get a peek into haute couture.

Though the organisers had a tough time dealing with the audience, it was a real encouragement for fashion freaks to know that they have more folks to support them in bringing about a transformation in Kerala's fashion scene.

When designer Vivek Karunakaran showcased colourful and vibrant shades of attires for the fun loving modern women, which included bikini costumes, they were received with a big applause by the audience.

Designer Jatin Kocchar from Mumbai quoted that fashion, when it comes to Kerala, is a baby step. "There is potential everywhere and Kerala too has its potentiality in inculcating the essence of fashion in their day-to-day life. This is like a regional education to the people who would love to be imbibed into the fashion world," he said.

Kerala has a long way to go in realising its true potential in incorporating small happening fashion statements into their daily life. Kochi International Fashion Week is said to be the first step in this stride to be chic and smart.

Karthika, Suhasini in ramps today

Post the success of her Ko, Karthika seems to be much sought-after. And mind you, not just in filmi circles. The actress will now sashay down the ramp for the first time in Kochi today for international designer Sanjana Jon.

"Yes, Karthika will be in Kochi for a fashion show and she's quite excited about her first tryst with the fashion world," says a source, "She'll be checking out her costumes designed by Sanjana Jon and will be walking the ramp along with other models on the final day of the show."

But it's not just this young actress who is all set to walk the ramp at Kochi. It looks like Suhasini Mani Ratnam will also be taking to the catwalk! Incidentally, Suhasini, will be celebrating her birthday shortly as she's turning 50 on August 15.

Bollywood actress Kangna Ranaut joins the bevy of Mollywood beauties like Mamta Mohandas, Parvathy Omanakuttan and Shweta Menon who'll also set the ramp on fire. Shonali Sehgal and Nitesha Suri will also be modelling. All in all, it looks like an interesting and fashionable evening for these ladies!

The day 2 of KIFW marked with larger crowds and popular models on ramps. The second day got off with the “Apple Pie and Candy pop” designs from Jules Idi Amin. The flashy orange, ice-cream white and citrus yellow designs were welcomed by the crowd with great enthusiasm. Bollywood actress Sonali Sehgal was the show stopper for show sponsored by Mahindra Xylo.

The second show for the day was by the world famous designer Jatin Kochhar who had previously hosted shows in Brazil, South Africa and around the globe. The theme for the show was “Black Magic”. The black complimented by silver designs were a great delight for everyone.

The third and the most exciting show was by Vivek Karunakaran, his collection of resort wears inspired by the free spirited woman on a holiday cruise created great waves among the fashion lovers present. The “leave the beach –toss it” on type designs truly expressed the theme.

The day came to an end with the wedding designs of Riyaz Gangji. The western and Indo-Western wedding designs were showcased together with traditional Indian Jewellery. The designs were predominantly in black, red, pink and white. Swetha Menon malayalee actress was the main attraction during the show.

Quote:
The star attraction of 2nd day was presence of popular Malayalam actress and former Miss India Swetha Menon. Its after a quite long time, Swetha making into ramps. However she looks extremely gorgeous in the specially designed wedding collections.

The much talked about Kochi International Fashion Week has come to an end with a lot of aplomb.

As Kochiites drooled over each of the latest trends the designers displayed, guess who sizzled with her simple and striking designs in bright hues?

It was none other than the petite lady Julie Verghese, who stole the show not only with her endless charm but also with her Apple Pie and Soda Pop collection.

The scintillating collection in citrus, mango yellow, orange and apple green colours even added an extra oomph to the models, who along with Sonali Sehgal, showcased the lovely outfits.

“Frosty, funny and happy, something you can slip into in a jiffy” — that’s how Julie describes her evening wear collection.

But other than the tangy colours, it also caught the attention of many fashionistas for its minimum stitches and simple cuts in jersey and georgette sans embroidery, buttons, sequins and all that bling.

“These outfits are for those who are a bit daring,” gushes the half-Malayali, half-Arab, who is one of the emerging fashion designers in Chennai.

Her label, Jules Idi Amin, brings the creativity of the young designer to the fore. She stepped into the world of fashion after a course in fashion designing from NIFT, Chennai.

But when you get more curious about the queer name of her label, she laughs it off by saying it’s the name her schoolmates gave her for being a terror!

Born and brought up in Kuwait, Julie found happiness in sketching and drawing lovely designs right from her school days.

A stint with an export house in Chennai in 2007 just after her NIFT days saw her creativity running riot. The result was a pretty line of outfits titled Xoco.

“It was all about experimentation. I generously used black in figure-hugging dresses and short skirts,” says Julie, “The uniqueness in this line is in its detailing. I’ve given it all my attention,” adds Julie, a name to reckon with in the fashion circuit of Chennai.

With many shows to her credit, Julie was part of the recent Chennai International Fashion Week as well and is happy with the way Kochi is evolving with almost all the international labels on tow.

“There’s an emerging fashion conscious crowd in Kochi too
,” observes the designer.

Julie feels its ultimately your personality that carries forward a particular trendy wear.

“Our country has a lot of potential. Instead of blindly following the West we to should emerge as a brand,” says the talented designer, who dreams of being part the Paris Fashion Week one day.

Saw Chappa Kurishu last day.... I felt the movie should have been made as promo for our city- Kochi, rather a movie, with so many well shot exterior shots. The urbanity it stamped in almost every single frame, and I guess its that very reason the movie didn't do well in box office. Our market is not yet ripe for digesting the ultra-chic urbanity of the movie. However surely its some what like many bollywood movies likes Lucky Oye or Bheja Fry.... A pure multiplex kind of stuff...

The pick of the lot for me, is a song sequence which shot at Puthuvpeen Mangrove belt, which was recently destroyed by LNG Terminal authorities. I have seen the place as a major agitation venue by environmentalists for alleged damages done on the site... But on the screen, the lake and half retarded mangrove belt looks really awesome... An Irony, which only a lens can create it.....

Though I been there some months back, seeing the movie, made me too nostalgic with all the regular places of the city well featured and shot. Perhaps after 20 or 30 years, our future generation would be too amused to see their Kochi in today's lens as we do when seeing some 70s movie like Cochin Express, Ernakulam Junction or many early 90s movie, today.

Hi friends

I have a doubt. Did Surya TV shifted their Kerala Headoffice to Kochi? I heard such a news yesterday thro' a friend of mine. His sister is now working in its marketing division and he told me that they shifted their news studios also there. I think, the new location is somewhere in Vazhakala... I had eariler seen the small office of Surya TV near Chitoor road, but this is a new info... Can anyone confirm it?

Likewise one more general channel is coming up from Kochi. A group of NRI funded channel, Janam TV, funded by leading industrialists from UAE and others, will soon have its studios and head office in Aluva. Ace director Priyadarshan will be the chairman of the new company and chief creative director, while Suresh Kumar (producer), Ravi Pillai and Ujala's Chairman K.P Ramachandran will have major stake. The channel is expected to launch by 3rd quarter of 2012

Yes. They have shifted their head office to Kakannad(not sure of the exact location). I think it happened some 5-6 months back.

I will also try digging more news about that. I have seen Vazhakala Reliance. That Bldg is really spacious. Moreover recently Surya's News settings have changed massively, indicating they may have a new Newsfloor. So chances are there for Surya's Corporate HQ at Kochi.

If so, I think, Kochi is fastly emerging as a media hub

1. Surya-Kiran TV
2. Manorama News and new Entertainment channel
3. Indiavision
4. Reporter TV
5. Jeevan TV
6. We TV (Kairali Studios)

Good going!!!

Kochi deserves a Media City, on models on DMC. I hope Smart City will have such a zone within its facility, which will surely encourage more media companies into the city
