More good posts today Ken, all about the '1960s/1970s Residential Tower Blocks' throughout the City - all posts now Indexed.

The last one, Bewick Court Re-furb. I thought it was a major improvement to the original 1970s Concrete Block . . .

Hebburn multi storey blocks

South Tyneside Homes manages five multi-storey blocks, three in Jarrow and two in Hebburn.

The two blocks in Hebburn are Westmorland and Durham Courts.

Westmorland Court is a nine-storey block with 133 flats and Durham Court is an 18-storey block with 111 flats.

Generally there is good demand for all the flats. Durham Court was previously a Sheltered Housing Scheme so flats are occupied by people over 60 and enjoys the benefits of a communal lounge and laundry

( above from a South Tyneside Homes Director of Housing Management report dated 3 March 2008

Hebburn text from Tower Block / Pastscape

Four slab blocks linked with deck access at first floor level.

The blocks were built as public housing as part of the Hebburn New Town Redevelopment to the design and specification of the contractors, Stanley Miller Ltd. Construction was approved by committee in 1971 and took place in 1974.

Two of the blocks have since been demolished.

The blocks were constructed by Hebburn Urban District Council.
The Primary address,

Alternate address and the Former addresses are the addresses of the individual tower blocks. Northumberland Court and Cumberland Court are listed as Former addresses as the blocks are now demolished.

Northumberland Court is known to have been demolished beween 2007 and 2009.

The date of demolition for Cumberland Court is unknown.

The Alternate name was the name given to the contract for the development.

Durham Court is a nineteen-storey point block, consisting of 111 flats (37 one-bedroom, 74 two-bedroom).

Westmorland Court is a nine-storey block consisting of 133 flats (14 one-bedroom, 119 two-bedroom).

Northumberland Court was a fifteen-storey slab block of 89 flats (43-one bedroom, 46 two bedroom).

Cumberland Court was a six-storey slab block of 114 dwellings of both flats and maisonettes (17 one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom, 81 three-bedroom).

Construction is of reinforced concrete frame with pre-cast external concrete cladding panels.

The tender accepted from Stanley Miller Ltd was £2,750,902. The development was opened by the Chairman of the Council, Councillor John Evans

Here are some photographs taken by myself 02/02/12 ( hosted on Photobucket)

3 x Jarrow Multi Storey Flats

Continued from post above (Hebburn)

South Tyneside Homes manages five multi-storey blocks, three in Jarrow and two in Hebburn. The three blocks in Jarrow are Ellen, Wilkinson and Monastery Courts; each block is 11 storeys high with 44 flats.

(above from a South Tyneside Homes Director of Housing Management report dated 3 March 2008)

Text from Tower Block http://fields.eca.ac.uk/gis/ and Pastscape

Location: Grange Rd, Primrose, South Tyneside

Three twelve-storey H-plan tower blocks with deck access at first floor level, built as public housing as part of the Central Area Redevelopment of Jarrow.

Each block consists of 22 one-bedroom flats and 22 two-bedroom flats, making 132 dwellings in total. Consulting architects for the development were Robert Matthew, Johnson, Marshall and Partners. Construction was approved by committee in 1962.

For more information on this site, please follow the link below:
http://www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=1496793

The blocks were constructed by Jarrow Municipal Borough Council.

Four point blocks were originally intended.

The site of the fourth block was to be to the north of Monastery Court so that the two eastern blocks reflected the two western blocks.

The fourth block was abandoned once the site of the ex-servicemen's club for the development was agreed as it was thought that the fourth block would overshadow the club.

The revised scheme put forward by the consulting architects aimed to create a visible and physical realtionship with the shopping centre across the road. They also wanted to segregate pedestrians and vehicles.

The blocks adhered to the requirement of a residential density of 130 people per acre. Mr Gilmour was the consulting architect for RMJM

The following photographs taken by myself 02/02/12 ( hosted on Photobucket)

Ellen & Wilkinson Courts (western end of Grange Rd)

Monastery Court (eastern end of Grange Rd)

If I can also add my thoughts.

Skyscraper City "information and reference" locations, have really benefitted from this. Considerable updates of information have been possible, Ken, on . . .

1 - Skyscraper City News , pages updated by Talisker.

2 - Skyscraper City Newcastle Forum Subject Index, updated by me.

I can confirm that the latter (an 'ever increasing' reference source) has greatly increased its scope following some of Ken's posts. Definitely worth a mention.

Oddly enough I was thrown by Kens photograph as on first glance it appear the statue has a hat on but I now realise that is the light shade

The monument to Sir Charles Mark Palmer was originally located at Palmer Memorial Hospital but was subsequently relocated in 1982 to Tyne Street, Jarrow Riverside Park. This is where this set of photographs were taken in January 2003. The monument now stands in Grange Road, Jarrow following its restoration.

The monument is by the sculptor, Albert Toft and was inaugurated in 1903. The figure of Palmer is in bronze and stands 3metres high. The stone pedestal is 4.5 metres high and 1.76 metres square. It was commissioned by public subscription.

When I photographed the monument is was in poor condition, much vandalised but good to learn that it was later to be renovated and placed in a more public space where such damage will not in future happen.

The details below are taken from the Northumberland At the Opening of the Twentieth Century – Contemporary Biographies (1905).

Picture was taken from footbridge over Central Motorway & the brick gable to left of picture is that of Pandon Buildings.

Have been onto Google Streetview to try to line up and "near certain" that multi block is King Charles Court (the most southerly), as the other 2 would be behind Pandon Buildings.

Double check for yourself to make sure, using Camden St and the Central Motorway as view points ( the footbridge not on StreetView lines)

Ken, superb pictures and information (all the more so as the book I crave, High Rise, is going (or not) for very silly sums on amazon/abebooks). Thank you very much.

Right, updated the shieldfield house, king charles and pandon court and wilkinson court entries. Jarrow is contained within the south tyneside council group, which I think is correct.

Searching for Northumberland Court, I found these interesting photos from Norman Dunn http://www.dunn247.co.uk/index.html

Not sure where this one is:

Thought similar but Norman Dunn is generally an "East Gateshead/ Hebburn / Jarrow/ South Shields" man - his sites are quite impressive with lots of photographs but sometimes difficult to index and locate what you require

Had another look at the website. The latter flats were apparently on School street, which coincidently is the location of the new housing development Ken described in the South Shields, Jarrow and Hebburn thread:

Another look:

Looked pretty grim, all boarded up.
