Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysore



The other common name is “Mysore Zoo” and it is one of the oldest and well maintained zoos in India. It not only houses a wide range of animals, reptiles and birds but the garden maintained is no less than any of the botanical gardens. My grandparents referred to this place as “Khas Bangale” / Private Bungalow or the Maharajahs.





The zoo is 100 years old started by Chamarajendra Wodeyar in 1892. Now it is managed by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka. Mysore zoo is place for a fun filled outing as well as a place to learn more about the behavior of animals and birds. The zoo is sprawled over 250 acres of land including the Karanji lake.

The zoo has been successful in breeding various species of animals and rare and exotic birds in captivity. The zoo is well laid out with paths and big enclosures to house animals and birds. The enclosures are designed in such a way that the animals do not miss their natural environment.





A striking band stand is present near the Zebra enclosure, which is now used by people to finish off their picnic basket.

There is a children park with the famous concrete giant slide. The Gulgangi trees next to the children park are a favorite place for kids to collect the red gleaming gulgangi seeds.





The hippos lazing in the water and the swan enclosure offers a peak into the lives of these creatures.

Gorillas, Chimpanzees, various types of monkeys, Giraffes, Gaur, Wild Bisons, Zebras, White Deer, Nilgai, Spotted Deer, Indian and African Elephants, Bears, Porcupines, Black Bucks, Rhinoceros, Tapir are the herbivores of the zoo.

Tigers, Lions, Leapords, Black Panther, White Tiger, Otters, Jackals, and Wolves are some of the carnivores of the zoo.





Birds like Silver and Gold Peasant, Big Horn Bill, Emu, Ostrich, Flamingoes, Spoon Bill, Pelican, White and Blue Peacocks, Sarus Cranes, Love Birds, Geese, Ducks, Parrots etc., are the bird life of the zoo.

You can either walk or take the electric van to go around the zoo.



Animal Adoption Program
The animal adoption program started by the Zoo authority lets you adopt an animal for a fee. The adoptions have increased over the year. It is very easy to adopt an animal, please contact the zoo office for more information. The person who adopts will get a certificate of appreciation, a mention in the local daily newspaper (Star of Mysore) and a free pass to visit the zoo for a year. The adoption is valid for a year and can be renewed.

CITY BAGS 'NAGARA RATNA' AWARD

President to present award tomorrow in Mumbai

Mysore, July 7 (KCU&KK)- The City of Mysore, acclaimed for its rich heritage, has now acquired one more status in being adjudged as the city with the most well-managed administration in the country, cleanliness of top quality and developing fast thus bagging the award 'Na- gara Ratna'.

The adjudgement is learnt to have been made by All India Institute of Local Self Government, a body of the Union Government.

Disclosing this to Star of Mysore here yesterday, Corporation Commissioner K.S. Raikar said "With the implementation of the projects under JNNURM the city has been on the path of good progress. The adjudging body is learnt to have assessed the progress made by all the 63 cities covered under JNN-URM and zeroed in on Mysore for the award.

"The Award Selection Committee was headed by Retired Supreme Court Judge Arijit Pasayat and two members were deputed to each of the 63 cities to make an assessment. The investigation team had visited the city in March, inspected the progress of JNNURM works and the city layout system before submitting the analysis report to the committee. Based on that the coveted 'Nagara Ratna' award was bagged by Mysore, a real pride for MCC, said Raikar.

Continuing he said "under the 'Nagara Ratna' award three cities will be selected to be graded as 1st, 2nd and 3rd with a cash reward of Rs. 10 lakh, Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh respectively. It is not sure under which category Mysore has bagged the award as the Union Government has only communicated that the city has won the laurel. The official announcement of category will be made only at the award presentation programme."

The 'Nagara Ratna' award will be presented by President Prathiba Patil tomorrow at Yashwanth Rao Chavan Foundation in Mumbai. It is learnt, Mayor Pushpalatha Chikkanna, MCC Commissioner K.S. Raikar and JNNURM Superintending Engineer Suresh Babu will be leaving for Mumbai to receive

CM keen on developing Mys, Mandya, Ch’nagar districts

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday announced that special emphasis would be laid on development of Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts.

AMC bags first slot followed by Mysore city corporation

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been ranked as the third best municipal corporation in the country after Ahmedabad and Mysore as the President Pratibha Patil honoured the best managed urban local bodies at the Nagar Ratna Awards held in Mumbai on Friday.

Mohan Singh Rajpal, mayor and Mahesh Pathak, municipal commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation received the award of a trophy and Rs 2 lakh from the President Patil.

Further, under the segment awards categories, Nashik Municipal Corporation was announced as the best in public health services. Kalyan–Dombivili Municipal Corporation won the award for improvement of roads and streets.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation was adjudged the overall best performer at the awards function, organised by the All India Institute of Local Self Government.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation received a trophy, along with a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh. The civic body's Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) has attracted the attention of global urban planners.

Mysore City Corporation was adjudged the second best performer and received a trophy and a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh.

The selection committee for the awards was headed by former Supreme Court Justice Arijit Pasayat, who evaluated the performance of various cities on nine different parameters. Other award winners included Vadodara Municipal Corporation for basic amenities to urban poor, Bangalore for financial management, Vishakhapatnam for use of IT in governance and service delivery, Faridabad for recreational facilities, Rajkot for complaints redressal system, Surat for innovation while Agartala civic body was awarded for transparency and accountability.

HC issues bailable warrant against Mysore DC
Bangalore, July 8, DHNS

The High Court has issued a bailable warrant against the Deputy Commissioner of Mysore and others for not implementing the court order regarding the award of compensation to a farmer whose land had been acquired for the Harangi irrigation project.

Hearing a contempt petition by Rajegowda, who had moved the High Court challenging the delay in awarding compensation for two acres of land acquired for the project in 1998 — a grant given by the State government in 1979 — the Division Bench comprising Justice K L Manjunath and Justice B V Nagarathna ordered issue of bailable warrant to the Deputy Commissioner and Special Land Acquisition officer for not implementing the court order and for abstaining from the proceedings.

The petitioner moved the court when he did not receive compensation even ten years after the acquisition of his land. The respondents then promised to pay compensation to Rajegowda. However, when the authorities did not keep the promise, he filed a contempt petition.

Rohit Shetty, who often walks on Kukkarahalli tank bund, says he has never been tempted to skip his morning walk. “It is tempting to snuggle up and sleep. But, once you drink on the beauty of nature here, you feel you are missing something if you don’t come here every single morning,” says the father-of-two, who is in mid forties now.

For Pratima Dikshit, who has made Mysore her temporary home on a sabbatical till she finishes her stint with Yoga at Gokulam, city has much to offer.

“It was crowded on Friday morning, just like any growing city which grapples with its identities -- of religion and modernity. Yet, climbing the Chamundi Hills was a experience by itself. I wouldn’t trade it for anything on earth!” she says.

Coffee, herbal juices, spicy breakfast, steamy idlis and crispy hot dosas -- Mysore mornings are worth every minute spent in the open. Enjoy while it lasts!

WADIYAR CLAIMS DODDAKERE MAIDAN AS HIS PROPERTY

Mysore, July 9 (KCU&KK)- In a sudden unprecedented development, several signboards stating 'This land belongs to Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar. Trespassers will be prosecuted' were seen being erected all around the Doddakere Maidan (Garike Maala) this morning raising the curiosity of passers-by.

When SOM contacted MUDA Commissioner Dr. C.G. Betsurmath in this regard, he clarified that the said property bearing Survey No. 1 was a revenue land and did not come under the purview of MUDA. He contended that it could neither be claimed as a private property. Surprisingly, the erected signboards also cited a High Court order favouring the ownership of Wadiyar.

SOM tried to contact Tahasildar Manjunathswamy but he was learnt to be out of station while Assistant Commissioner Bharathi was not reachable on her mobile phone. However, sources at the Palace contended that the property was indeed a private one of Wadiyar and that permission should be sought to utilise the Maidan.

CITY YOGA TEACHER AT HONG KONG

The annual Asia Yoga Conference (AYC) was held in Hong Kong recently. It was the biggest yoga conference in the world attracting more than 1,500 people during the four-day conference.



The faculty consisted of more than fifty yoga teachers from all over the world attracting participants from Asia, Europe and America.

R.Sharath Jois (see pic along side) of Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Gokulam, Mysore, was among the 50 yoga teachers who guided the students at the Conference.
