Chicago for the Advanced Part 1: At Home

01. Climate in Chicago can be a surprizing thing here. On this shot you see a storm coming in from Lake Michigan, bringin hail on a 30 celsius day. For a short moment the light becomes very bright and warm.

02. After the hail storm a lightning storm presented itself. Unfortunately I wasn't able to cature a flash, but the again the colours were quite nice.

03. Here's another storm coming in, this time from the West.

04. Some times cold air sets in from the lake, causing lake mist to enter the city, sometimes causing some of the taller building to disappear for a few moments.

05. Same from another angle.

06. During the summer months there is always many boats lining up to enter the lake through the lock.

07. Same angle, different moment. The water from the Chicago River doesn't flow into the lake, but flows in the opposite direction. They reversed to course of the river to keep filthy water from the industry out, as the lake is also the source of our tap water.

08. You have to get up very early to make this one, but when you do you get to capture the first sun as reflected on the northern facade of the buildings. Quite nice of a moment.

09. Neighbour shot (Jewelers Building).

10. Another neighbour shot

11. Neighbour somewhere further down the road

12. Warming up the parade for Memorial Day. Click to enlarge.

13. All these were taken from this balcony.

The big ones usually take only a couple of minutes, but you don't want to be outside during one.

Nice photos....

I know I'm in the minority here but I actually like the weather in Chicago. I love the summer lightning storms that pop up from time to time. It's not that dreary rain that can settle in for days on end. These storms are the real deal. Lots of crash, boom, bang and then it's over.

The lake also has a huge impact on the weather. Many days, the weather in Chicago depends on the mood of the lake. Some days it remains calm and tranquil while other days it decides to envelope the lakefront in a mysterious fog. Then there are the days when the wind and lake team up to wreak havok. On those days it can be challenging just to maintain your balance while standing anywhere near the lake.

Regardless of the current conditions, the next day can bring the exact opposite weather conditions. I like the unpredictability of it.

I'd say some of the storms can get pretty nasty.

Great pic of one of the biggest stars in the new Transformers movie. Upon closer examination, it appears that the Helmut Jahn interior cupola renovation from years ago is still intact.

Here's an interior shot from way back in the day. The model on the left table pretty much dates this photo.

I too love the City in stormy weather. These midwestern storms are certainly most impressive. Set against the cityscape of Chicago, even more so...

As I said in another thread, a trip to Chicago this summer is a must for me. Luckily, I can always cook up some excuse...

The building looks different; is the one in "Transformers" movie?

Amazing pics, was at the top of the john hancock building when a storm came in, we thought the sun had set until the clouds dispersed to reveal a beautiful sunset. Absolutely loved Chicago.
