TN IT Secy. cautions firms on environment
Chennai, April. 30 (PTI): The Tamil Nadu Government today asked IT firms in Chennai to create more green space to take care of the environment.

"We have created the infrastructure to attract investment and we will now be looking at environment. If we don't have enough green space in IT parks and development centres, Chennai will go the Bangalore way," State Infomation Technology Secretary Vivek Harinarain, said.

Addressing an international conference on 'Emerging opportunities in infrastructure for IT/ITES services', organised by Infratech Infrastructure services, he said Bangalore created the infrastructure, but had lost its environment.

"It is imperative to create green space in the campuses. In 5000 acre of IT lands, we need at least 20 per cent of green space," he said adding global companies would be interested in the environment of the campuses where their works are executed.

"It is our responsibility to create a green environment near the IT lands," he said.

"By 2025, in the total working force worldwide, around 60-65 per cent will be from India. The challenge is how to convert this working force into a productive force," he said, quoting a report.

"We do need a lot of infusion of private capital funds into our education system. The Government cannot do everything and it can only set standards. But converting it into reality is to be done by the private sector." It would not be a philanthropic activity for the private sector, but an investment.

IT corridor to be made eco-sustainable

The IT industry in the city will soon have a green burden. The State Environment Department is drafting an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the both existing and upcoming IT units along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) from Madhya Kailash junction to Tirupporur. The aim is to ensure that the IT corridor is made environmentally sustainable and does not go the eco-stressed Bangalore way
