If you want to know the raw history of Buffalo's light rail system, here's my favorite article on the subject: http://ribaulo.tripod.com/metro.html

"First train arrived from Toronto with 35 passengers at new NF Amtrak station"
And 30 were railfans .

It's been a long time coming. I'd like to take a train out of there one day, although if I'm being honest I'd rather take a train from a renovated Central Terminal because this is out-of-the-way. And I'd do that on day 1 since I'm a semi-railfan myself.

A large gallery of Buffalo's majestic old Central Terminal, as published in The Buffalo News over the weekend. This relic of the past may be the key to Buffalo's rail transportation future.

Funny how small Amtrak is when it comes to conductors and fleet. I'm pretty sure I've seen both of those guys (definitely the guy on the left) on one of the many trips to or from Utica from Depew.

So I was thinking a few minutes ago, what if Buffalo experimented with BRT lines?

Traditional buses aren't "sexy" when compared to other forms of transport, and they are pretty slow when you acccount for the traffic lights. They can't hold that many people either and the stops are on only one side the road.

BRT does not mix with traffic if it is dedicated. Although I believe Metro Rail needs to be extended to the Airport, UB and Southtowns among a few other areas, subways won't be the answer for the most part.

So on corridors with lots of cars (Transit, Lakeshore/Camp Road in Woodlawn), BRT might be the way to go.

They'll call it an "extension" but they're literally just slapping a platform down a few hundred feet from the Erie Canal Harbor station.

The purple dotted line is what the proposal is, the real extensions should be the "green" I marked down. The arrow leads to the Walden Galleria, the area'a largest shopping mall in Cheektowaga, the airport, and Transit Road in Lancaster. The other arrow leads to University at Buffalo and Getzville.

Funding will be secured for the extension of Buffalo's "Subway to Nowhere." The stunted 6.4 mile line has existed in its current state since 1986. I can say with 90% confidence that the extension would most likely be the light blue line in the attached document.

Quote:
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Monday he will push to spend $500 million on a second round of the Buffalo Billion program.

The money would help fund an extension of the light rail system to Amherst, the purchase of idle land in downtown Niagara Falls and turning some of the former Bethlehem Steel plant property into an industrial park for advanced manufacturing.

“You made this happen,’’ Cuomo told a gathering of supporters at the University at Buffalo's North Campus in Amherst, during his second State of the State speech of the day.

Potential view

Current view

Quote:
Minkel also noted that the authority considered a Millersport Highway alternative to reach UB’s North Campus, but prefers the Niagara Falls Boulevard-Maple Road plan, though details must yet be finalized. The selected route also offers a strong economic justification, projecting a $310 million increase in property values that will raise property tax revenues 32 percent for the City of Buffalo and Town of Amherst.

Other projections include a potential $1.7 billion development or redevelopment of 864 acres along the route, and an increase of daily ridership from the current 20,000 to about 45,000, while also directly linking UB’s three campuses.

Finally, it will be built as it should have been in the 80's and connect Buffalo with upstate ny's largest suburb.

Not to stoke the fire but could you imagine if it had been made in the 80's we may have had a few more extensions by now and have a legit metro system...

Yes, I think there will be one or two underground stations.
