Gorge on a variety of dosas at the Keys Hotel

The ongoing Dosa Fest at The Keys Hotel is a treat for lovers of this South Indian delight. Dosas are perennial favourites and that seems to explain the plethora of dosa festivals in the city.

The fete is on till the end of this month. Timings are from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Be the first to taste 'government Shawarma' in city

Soon, chicken buffs in the capital city can queue up for the first-ever ‘government shawarma.’

Thrilled by soaring meat sales, state government-undertaking Meat Products of India (MPI) is planning to open its first stall dishing out the meat-and-vegetable Arab delicacy at Sasthamangalam.

‘’We are planning to open an outlet directly run by MPI at Sasthamangalam. (The present one is run through a franchisee). It will be the second directly-operated unit and it will have the first chicken shawarma stall,’’ MPI managing director Ani S Das said.

Planning to open ten more outlets in the busier areas of the capital city, MPI has invited expressions of interest for opening commissioned-based units.

That's really cool. Now, I don't have to travel to Technopark for having those world renowned sandwiches!

Veedu: Simply Yummy

Twelve in the afternoon and Veedu turns a busy place buzzing with college students, government employees and families. This restaurant at Thycaud, from the road looks like a traditional house with wooden works. As you enter ‘Veedu’ to the left you see their kitchen. It has a small opening through which customers who are suspicious about cleanliness can take a peep. As it is the peak time, there is so much of hurry-burry in the kitchen. Before serving it to their customers, cooks turn testers to ensure the food is tasty. Chicken thoran is one of the most sought after dish, others being beef fry and chicken ulathiyathhu.

Preparing a good meal anywhere in Kerala, be it at home or for a marriage ceremony, coconut curries and thorans are an indispensable side dish which most of the Keralites relish. Chicken thoran is a Kerala delicacy made from crushed ginger and garlic, chopped green chillies and onions along with boneless pieces of chicken and other spices. Strands of coconut blend with chicken and gives the flavour of an authentic Kerala preparation. It is neither hot nor bland. “Daily I make an enormous quantity of chicken thoran, as this is one of the fast moving dishes at the hotel. A plate costs Rs 65,” says Ram Das, cook. He has been a cook for the past 30 years working at hotels in Bangalore and Mumbai. Try out the very same recipe on fish or meat, it will turn out to be more delicious.

Ayswariya: Eat out in Chic settings

‘Ayswariya - culinary delights ‘n’ pleasing hospitality’ on MG Road (down the Over Bridge-Pazhavangadi road) chases away the din of the city traffic the moment you enter its chic settings. The soft hazelnut shade of the walls, set off with streaks of ebony and white on the furniture and cornices, accentuate a mood that invites you to unwind and enjoy the quite moment at hand.

The menu includes non-vegetarian and authentic Chinese and North Indian dishes. The very desi names of the delicacies tickle your taste buds even as you scan the menu.

The spread under the category ‘Kerala Peruma’, for instance, includes Kada Roast, Tharavu Mappas, Malabar Meen Koottan, Kanava Varattiyathu, Koottukari, Chiratta Puttu, Kallappam and the like. The North Indian Dhaba has on offer Tandoori Murgh, Afghan Murgh, Machi Tikka, Pav Bhaji etc. For the Tanddori breads, one has to step in after 6 pm. The Chinese cuisine enthusiasts can have their platter full of Spring Rolls, Hakka Noodle Chicken, Fish in Hot Oyster Sauce, Shredded Lamb Ball Pepper.

To the delight of the genuine foodie, the dishes taste as good as they read on the menu. If the crispy Spring Rolls with the tangy dip go for a whopper of a starter, the main course of Nan dripping with hot butter, fried rice and curries with rich gravy would flatter one’s gastronomic fantasies. There are also ice creams and fresh juices for dessert.

The layout, interiors and other facilities of the hotel were outsourced to a US-based company, which has done a neat job of spreading the dining space of the eat-out onto three floors, giving ample room to accommodate visitors. The kitchen has been set separately on the top most floor with facilities for exhaust and fresh air circulation. The neatly done up cooking space with chefs donning spic and span aprons and caps speak for the high bench marks set by the venture. Washed and dried cutlery is sent up on dumbwaiter lifts from the basement to the kitchen. The hotel claims to serve quality food prepared in hygienic conditions and without syrups, food colour and other synthetic stuff.

Diners’ delight

Diners might still remember it as the old Hotel Geeth. While the location at GPO Junction remains unchanged, the new ownership which took over around 10 years back, has rebranded the hotel as The Capital. But for the spacious and well-lit surroundings preserved from the old times, the chic hotel that now welcomes you has little that reminds of the predecessor. The re-positioning of the hotel as a business class chain has entailed a grand makeover in its ambience, facilities and menu.

Coriander, the restaurant, is aesthetically set. The warm cream of the flowered curtains accentuates the roomy feel of the dining space. Executive Chef Sahaya Rajam had laid out a sumptuous menu for the buffet lunch when the restaurant witnesses sees rush hour traffic.

Instead of the regular appetizers, the chef suggested ‘Fish n Chips’ listed under ‘Chef’s Special’ and we were happy we yielded. The combination of saucy potato wedges and baked fish coupled with the delicious dip was a treat to the taste buds. The full course meal awaited and we proceeded to start off with spoonful of rice, Travancore style fish curry and kappa. Avial and beetroot thoran made great combinations with kanava (squid) ularathiyathu, ethappazham (banana) pulissery.

There was a variety of Indian breads to choose from and we opted for roti with chicken khorma and also discovered that the curry made a delectable side dish to masala rice. “The fish is bought every morning from Vizhinjam. So the seafood preparations are fresh and figure among the hot favourites here,” says the chef.

For the diet conscious, the ‘salad station’ offers garden fresh veggies as well as combo salads with fruits and a variety of non-veg dressings. The religious calorie-watcher can stick to the ‘diet salad’ which has chopped broccoli, celery and other low-calorie vegetables.

In case you want to try one of those a la carte dishes with the pulao or plain rice, Chettinad Uruli Roast, which has baby potatoes sauted in a spicy masala, will be a safe bet.

The regular dessert tray has innovative payasam recipes - carrot, beetroot and semiya being some of the favorites. The rawa payasam prepared with a generous dose of fried and ground grated coconut is a must-try.

We chose to round off the treat with Fried Ice cream. The dollop of vanilla ice cream coated with a crispy crump of fried cornflakes turned out to be pure indulgence.

The buffet is served for lunch and will be open from 12.30pm.

If a light drink is all that your are feeling like, there is the 24-hour Coffee Shop to step in. From espresso to cappuccino and choice of smoothies, there are also a whole range of mocktails to try out.

For reservation, contact - 91 471 2471987, 3012301.

True! it took 45 mins for me to get in! But pretty happy with the service! even with huge rush there wasn't much delay in serving!

KFC must be regretting now for not having opened an outlet earlier on!
