VCP | Viracopos International Airport

Viracopos/Campinas International Airport (IATA: VCP, ICAO: SBKP) is an international airport in Campinas, state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Besides being a busy passenger terminal, it is the second-largest cargo airport in Brazil. One of its main features is that it is rarely closed due to bad weather conditions (an average 5 days per year). It was opened in 1960, as São Paulo lacked an airport capable of receiving then-new long-range jet aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8.

The airport is located 99 km. (62 miles) from São Paulo and 20 km (12 miles) from Campinas, close by the huge Bandeirantes-Anhangüera highway complex, which connects the capital city to the interior of São Paulo state.

Before the completion of São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport in 1985, Viracopos was, at least in theory, the main international gateway to São Paulo. However, the airfield's distance from the city made it very inconvenient for passengers and airlines. So, international flights directly to São Paulo were limited; most passengers simply opted to fly to Rio de Janeiro and connect to the smaller Congonhas Airport, which lies inside the city and very close to downtown and to the major business districts.

At that time, Viracopos even appeared on the Guinness Book of Records as the farthest airport from the city it allegedly served (a dubious title that now probably rests with Gonggar Airport, which lies at about the same distance from Lhasa, Tibet). Today, Viracopos is considered the airport for Campinas only, and as such the IATA code CPQ (for Campinas city) is also sometimes used. The Campinas region, like most of the interior of São Paulo state, is one of the most prosperous in Brazil, with an impressive economic output, and its local market is large enough to make Viracopos still a busy airport.

Facilities at the airport include:

150-180 flights per day
2,500 passengers/day
40 cargo airline companies.
3,240 m (10,630 ft.) runway
60,000 square meters ((646,000 square feet) of cargo terminals.
1,700 square meters (18,300 square feet) for animal cargo
1,480 cubic meters (52,200 square feet) of refrigerated space
65 m (213 feet)-high air traffic control tower.
As a major import/export hub, Viracopos enjoys 'express lanes' for courier traffic which are exceptionally quick and unbureaucratic for Brazilian standards.

beautiful!

although I'd prefer an expansion with the same style and shape of older terminals so it doesnt look like a collage.

old terminals are almost identical to Praga's ones.

Isn't that expansion way too small to handle the ever-increasing passenger numbers?

As far as I know GRU already operates far above its official capacity limit and I guess once the new terminal is inaugurated it will probably already reach its capacity limit again within the first year of its operation given the growth in Brazilian airline passenger numbers.

IMO Sao Paulo should simply build an entirely new airport with a starting capacity of at least 60 million passengers that can also be further expanded in the future.

I wish our politicians shared this opinion... Unfortunately, since there is the Viracopos airport less than 100 km away from the city, they have chosen to expand GRU for now.

It will be fairly quick to build (around 3-4 years) because most of the structures are metallic and can be made at the same time as the constructed area, and later just assembled in site. The estimate is that at least 40% of it is ready for the World Cup in 2014.

I would like to inform all international forumers, that this new passenger terminal will not be ready for the World Cup event in 2014. The Brazilian government, with all its incompetence and negligence did not prepare the country by the time that all the works for this mega event should have started. We are two and a half years from the World Cup and many works still have not begun.

Regarding the other airports across the country the Brazilian government is preparing temporary terminals to help passengers boarding. The worst thing in this damn country is that many things that are said to be called temporary become permanent.

INFRAERO, the company which administrates all Brazilian airports has been turning old and idle cargo terminals of bankrupt airliners of Guarulhos airport into passengers terminals in order to meet the growing demand of passengers in the airport, besides the fact that the only two dated and inefficient terminals have already reached their maximum capacity of passengers since years ago and so far nothing has been done in order to change this gloomy scenario.

So, this new terminal will have only 40% of its capacity ready by 2014. In other words, 2014 will be the chaos! Get ready for it dudes!

The interior design has a very similar "vibe" to Bangkok airport.

the good thing is that is a really nice terminal for long flights, the sad thing is that when this building is finished it will need to absorve more PAX that it was designed for.

My cents.
