Municipality plants 4.5m flower plants in Dubai

Quote:
By Staff | Published Wednesday, January 04, 2012

The Public Parks and Horticulture Department of the Dubai Municipality planted 4.5 million flower plants in the emirate last year, according to Hussain Nasser Lootah , director-general of the civic body.

“Nursing flower plants in parks and squares, road sides and residential areas has been a prime focus in our efforts to beautify the city. The planting drive started last year will be completed by this January and we hope the winter plants will yield flowers by next May,” said Lootah.

“We have planned our project according to the three seasons, summer, winter and spring. We select the flower plants according to the season and the place to be beautified,” said Lootah.

The Public Parks and Horticulture Department has a special team to study the sites and decide on the flower plants to be planted, fertilisers to be used etc.. Various flower plants found all over the world can be seen in Dubai’s parks and streets.

I like the overall concept with straight linear forms, very modern and a good addition to the ET

Wild vegetation that appears along roads and in other underused areas.
Pretty interesting to see how nature takes back what once was untouched desert sands

I guess the idea behind the park was to imitate a wadi or some sort of water stream, which I think turned out quite good. However I would have preferred something more modern for such an iconic project like Palm Jumeirah.
Something more abstract with curved or linear lines, more open space/plazas with water basins for example.
On the other hand matches the current design really good with the arabian-style (??) Shoreline apartments and the Golden Mile buildings.

At the end the most important thing is that they finally found money to convert that ugly stretch of sand into something green!

I could not resist to post these pictures of Madinat Al Arab, in my opinion a masterpiece of landscape architect (not because it is somehow modern or groundbreaking, just because it is incredibly lush and fits to its envirnonment perfectly and creates a place thats just like out of someones dreams)

Enjoy
