BotB is not very visible now... I assume its worth as much in scrap now (due to metal prices) as it was to commission the bl**dy thing in the first place

I expect quite a few of the scroats who were featured on the 'shop a looter' posters had some serious objections....

I was thinking "would the bridge be as visible as BotB?". Wikipedia states BotB was 57m with the spikes joining at 22m. The bridge is 37m and white with lights, so I guess that you are going to be able to see it from a fair distance - excellent.

Although, the bridge is also going to able to see you - face recognition cameras streaming to the security lodge. Am I the only person who objects to CCTV?
A beautiful bridge, but one that spies on it's users, always a fly in the ointment.

I think all right-minded individuals object to this kind of authoritarian bullshit.

Only downer I can put on this from the players points of view is it is going to severely add to their commutes from Cheshire compared to present.

Having to drive in with the rush hour traffic each morning as opposed to just nipping up to Sale (they train at Partington/Carrington at present don't they?) is going to rob an hour or two off the poor fellas days.

Nah I didn't think we'd have much sympathy...

Maybe it'll spark a boom in trade in Clayton and Openshaw shag pads.

Tough cac I say, when said mercenaries are getting paid in a week what the average Manc gets in a decade, being stuck in traffic is a mere truffle.

Especially when they hand in the transfer request at the end of the season.

I bet the first team stay at Carrington and only move up to Clayton on match days.

The players don't train at 9, 10am so they won't have rush hour traffic to deal with. It's usually from around 11am.

Issac! You know jack shit. Sorry to be so blunt. Stop guessing. These people and those that run the club for them don't think like you or me.

Guessing. During the Summer months the whole training complex will be used for national and international youth torunaments. it's not hard to figure out why. He looks good. Sign him up. Which youth player(and his parents) wouldn't have their heads turned by that training complex.

City will maximise the whole site 365 days a year. Of that there is no doubt.

So this bridge is 90m? Does anybody know how this compares to the height of the highest point (the 'pointy-bits') of the stadium?

hmm. A bit of research and it seems that I had confused myself below. The new bridge will span 90metres rather than being 90m in height whereas the highest point of the stadium is 75m.

Just reading below and Pixel2006 has already posted that the bridge will be 37m in height, so prominent in that area, but not visible from the city centre, or even Great Ancoats St. as the stadium pinnacles are.

This complex has been getting loads of national media attention this week, which can only be considered a good thing. It's really going to put Manchester/East Manchester on the map.

Absolutely. Manchester becomes more than a city centre in the national consciousness with both East Manchester and Salford Quays as significant 'other' centres.

I really feel that the Metrolink expansion will add to this feeling of 'more than just a city centre-ness', as the Didsbury's and Chorlton become seemingly more connected along with the Burys, Oldhams, Rochdales as well as the airport.

And all the while the city centre continues to spread, with NoMa, Greengate, Chapel St, First St and Ancoats amongst others extending the boundaries.

Not bad in recessionary times.

Two businesses blocking Manchester City's £100m training complex plans
Exclusive by Deborah Linton
October 24, 2011

FRESH START: City want to develop the land around their Etihad Stadium
City's plans for a world-beating training complex are being blocked by two small businesses which are refusing to sell up.

The Blues revealed in July they want to spend £100m transforming a run-down 80-acre plot in the shadow of the Etihad Stadium. The plans include a 7,000-capacity arena, community facilities and a sixth-form college. Backers say the project would create 250 jobs and kick-start development in one of Britain’s poorest neighbourhoods.

But a handful of businesses on the site have stalled progress by refusing to leave, we can reveal today. The companies holding firm say they feel they are being forced out and that re-location would be damaging. Four companies are yet to agree compensation packages with the club.

City are confident of striking a deal with two – Tyresave and cab firm Mantax.

But the owners of New Life Windows have not entered into any discussions with the club, while talks with OB Trucks — a vehicle-recovery firm – ground to a halt over the level of their demands, according to Town Hall papers.

If no deals are reached, Manchester council would look to step in and secure a compulsory purchase order (CPO) to force the firms to sell up at market prices. A report to the council’s executive, which states the case for a CPO, reveals that without the final plots, plans for the academy and training complex will not go ahead.

Manchester United fan and a glazier reject City offers to buy them out

Town hall chiefs say all companies have been offered ‘reasonable sums’, and the need to regenerate the area ‘clearly outweighs’ any disruption. The packages on offer are believed to include market-value sums for land, relocation costs and compensation money. Dozens of other firms on the site have already accepted.

Plans for the training complex were unveiled after years of research which saw Blues chiefs visit more than 30 elite sports venues across the world. A public consultation exercise showed local people were overwhelmingly in favour.

Council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein said negotiations would continue and compulsory purchases would only be sought as a last resort. But he added: "The transformational change associated with these proposals must go ahead.

"We don’t believe there are any interests in this area which can’t be accounted for in other parts of the city. We fully expect interests to be settled amicably and the club and the council are anxious for that to happen.

"CPOs are a traditional part of action taken to support regeneration and where you’ve got parties looking to deliver significant change, like this, we have to underpin that with the capability to deliver it."

The council’s ruling executive will be asked to agree to seeking the CPO in principle on Wednesday. The order could then be authorised in the new year.

All costs would be reimbursed by the club and its partners.

Eddie Smith, chief executive of regeneration company New East Manchester, said: "We are striving to reach a resolution that will avoid the need for compulsory purchases."

Manchester City declined to comment.

MEN.

Quote:
The row over 80 acres of land outside the Etihad Stadium is a David versus Goliath battle with a difference.

In the blue corner, the world’s richest football club. In the red corner, the owners of two small businesses – a United-supporting truck-recovery boss and a glazier.

What complicates the matter is that City’s plans for a new training complex would also provide a lifeline to a community where 35 per cent of people are on benefits. The club won’t only bankroll a world-class sporting venue but a new school and community facilities – with 80pc of new jobs going to local people.

The two businesses refusing to sell up are adamant they are being forced out on unfair terms.

Shaun O’Brien, who has run OB Truck Services on Quinn Street for 15 years, said: "As an independent business owner, this land is my pension. I’ve invested a lot here.

"They have offered me less than I paid for it 15 years ago. As far as I’m concerned, my land is not for sale at that price.

"They are snatching this from under us and I don’t think City and the council are dealing with it in the right way.

"No one’s ever approached us directly in person. We’ve just had letters telling us to sell up.

"Everybody has always wanted this land – like when they wanted to build a supercasino here. Manchester City say they are doing things for the area but they could put people out of business. Why should the council, acting for City, have the power to put a CPO on us?"

Zulfiquar Ali, who runs New Life Windows in a building owned by his father, Liaqat Ali, said: "My dad is totally against this sale. He was due to meet a representative from City this week but has had to go into hospital so we’ve had to postpone it.

"He had to approach them – they had never contacted us directly.

"I really think having to relocate will damage our business – we’ve only been here five years. We’ve made loads of advertising products with our address on and being off Alan Turing Way means we can get to Oldham, Rochdale, Ashton and Stockport easily.

"We only bought this land and built this building for the company five years ago.

"I don’t see why the council couldn’t have told us then they were planning all this.

"They have said they will try to relocate us somewhere staying in east Manchester but this is a really good location for us."

The two other businesses potentially facing CPOs are Tyre Save on Score Street and Mantax on Corbett Street – although the council is confident deals will be struck with both.

No one from either company was available to comment.

Vodafone also have a mast on the site but are believed to have agreed terms to relocate it.

The majority of other businesses have already left the area, which is now largely boarded up. Construction plant has been brought in to begin work.

The council says the development by City meets criteria needed to carry out CPOs where people will not move.
