AirNav Indonesia to standardize ATC wages
Agnes Winarti, The Jakarta Post, Denpasar | Headlines | Fri, April 26, 2013, 9:26 AM

Ichwanul said that AirNav Indonesia was currently prioritizing the development of air traffic control systems at major international airports around the archipelago, which included Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta), Bali (Ngurah Rai), Medan (Polonia, which soon will be replaced by Kuala Namu), Surabaya (Juanda) and Makassar (Hasanuddin).

“The development is for both equipment and human resources. For example, we will install control monitors that can monitor 10 flights simultaneously, instead of the current 14 flights, to ease the pressure on control duty and thus improve safety,” said Ichwanul.

SilkAir, the local wing of Singapore Airlines, on Thursday announced that it will soon fly to two more cities in Indonesia — Semarang and Makassar — increasing its Indonesian network to 11 destinations.

Subject to regulatory approvals, SilkAir will offer three weekly flights between Singapore and Semarang, Central Java, starting on July 29, and from Singapore to Makassar, South Sulawesi, starting August 1, SilkAir said in a statement. The new services will be operated on Airbus A319 and A320 planes, featuring both business and economy class cabins.

Meanwhile, Silk Air picked Makassar because it is the largest city in eastern Indonesia, making it the primary port and airline hub of the eastern part of the archipelago.

“It is home to many of Indonesia’s ethnic groups including the Bugis and offers a multitude of historical gems, natural attractions as well as a variety of sightseeing opportunities within and beyond the city,” Thng added.

Although Solaria and A&W restaurants are outside the airport terminal but they are not located outdoors.
Outdoors means the open air. You can see from the picture above (post #144) that both Solaria and A&W restaurants are buildings with roofs (not open air), therefore they're not located outdoors.

IMO, for transit passengers, it's more convenient to eat at the restaurants in the terminal rather than outside the terminal because the passengers don't need to pass the security checkpoints.

Discourse: RI’s aviation growth to skyrocket

How ready is Indonesia to compete with other countries and their carriers in ASEAN Open Sky Policy, which will be effective in 2015?

I can say that we are ready to face the Open Sky Policy as we keep developing our infrastructure and our domestic carriers continue to expand. We will open five airports when the policy is implemented: Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Denpasar and Makassar. Some people are afraid we will only become a market in ASEAN when the policy is effective, but I am optimistic that we will be able to tap into the opportunities. What is the benefit of protecting our market when everyone else is opening it? More connections will grow our economy and tourism sector. Besides, we are not going to allow foreign carriers to connect one domestic point to another. So, we do not have to worry about it.

Airline passenger traffic expected to spike during Idul Fitri
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | National | Thu, June 27 2013, 12:53 PM

Transportation Minister E.E. Mangindaan said on Thursday that the volume of air passengers was expected to increase by 11.7 percent to nearly 3.76 million passengers during the upcoming Idul Fitri holiday. “As in previous years, air passenger traffic is expected to increase during Idul Fitri, with air transportation accounting for the highest percentage of travelers compared to other transportation modes,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Mangindaan said the rapid rise in airline passengers would be anticipated by several airlines by increasing the number of flights. He added that the busiest airports in the country, such as Hasanuddin airport in Makassar, Juanda in Surabaya and Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta, could see rises of passenger traffic reaching 25 percent.

Silk Air reopens Makassar–Singapore
The Jakarta Post, Makassar | Archipelago | Sat, July 13, 2013, 8:04 AM

After four years, Silk Air, the regional wing of full-service carrier Singapore Airlines, has decided to reopen direct flights between Singapore and Makassar in South Sulawesi. The route will be officially opened on August 1. Silk Air manager for Sulawesi, Susan Yong, said that the economic development of South Sulawesi had increased over the past four years.

South Sulawesi, especially Makassar, was also chosen because it is the primary port and airline hub of eastern Indonesia. In the other hand, Sultan Hasanuddin Airport has increased its capacity and has a 3,500-meter runway after undergoing some renovation. Silk Air will use Airbus A319 and A320 and will fly three times a week from Makassar and Singapore and vice versa.

Garuda Indonesia Opens Operation Center in Makassar
By ID/Efi Yanuar on 1:00 pm, June 27, 2013.

Makassar. To strengthen its services to the eastern part of Indonesia, national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has opened an operation center in Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport on Thursday.

The new facility, Garuda Indonesia Operation Center and Crew Lounge, located in the Makassar branch office, was built to balance the operational growth of the state-owned airline in Makassar, South Sulawesi. “Garuda handles up to 30 flights a day in Makassar, with 58 cabin crew on duty,” Faik Fahmi, a Garuda Indonesia service director, said.

Last delivery of Sukhoi fighter jets arrive in Makassar
Andi Hajramurni, The Jakarta Post, Makassar | National | Wed, September 04, 2013, 9:50 PM

The last delivery of Sukhoi fighter jets arrived from Russia at the Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force base in Makassar on Wednesday in CKD (Completely Knocked Down) condition and unarmed. “The manufacturer also sent 13 technicians to assemble the aircraft. They will also perform a series of tests before handing them to the government,” Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force base spokesman Maj. Muliadi said.

He said usually it would take a week for the technicians to assemble the aircraft and perform the tests. As for the weaponry, the Indonesian government would procure them separately from the aircraft purchase.
