Garuda launches new routes from Makassar hub
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Business | Wed, July 02, 2014, 3:14 PM

Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia on Wednesday launched three new routes from its hub in Makassar, South Sulawesi, to enhance air connectivity in eastern Indonesia.

The three routes linked Makassar, South Sulawesi with Luwuk, Central Sulawesi; Bima, West Nusa Tenggara; and Mamuju, West Sulawesi. All routes fly one plane per day and use the French-Italian turboprop aircraft, Avions Transport Regional ATR 72-600, each of which has a total capacity of 70 passengers.

Batik Air to Use 13 New Aircraft This Year to Serve Indonesia’s Eastern Region
By*Eko Adityo Nugroho*on 12:18 pm Jul 21, 2014

Jakarta. Batik Air, a full-service carrier unit of Lion Air group, will use 13 new aircraft this year, adding to the six planes it operates now to boost service to Indonesia’s eastern region. The 13 aircraft will be composed of seven Airbus A320-200 and six Boeing 737-800, said Achmad Lutfie, the president director at Batik. “With the arrival of 13 new planes, by the end of this year, our fleet will consist of 19 planes,” he said recently. The planes will gradually arrive starting from August until the end of the year. Batik Air now flies six 737-900ER aircraft.

Achmad said Batik will add some flights to some existing routes as well as adding new ones. ”For example, the Ujung Pandang [Makassar, South Sulawesi province]-Ternate [Maluku island] route will be increased from two to five flights a day. For the opening of some new routes, those include Ujung Pandang–Timika [Papua]. This, however, still awaits permits from the Transportation Ministry,” he said.

Expansion of Hasanuddin Starts in Third Quarter*

MAKASSAR - PT Angkasa Pura I has targeted to commence physical works of the terminal expansion project of Makassar’s Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in the third quarter of this year. General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura (AP)I of Sultan Hasanuddin Airport Branch, Rachman Syafrie, explained that the port expansion project will be carried out simultaneously with the process of land acquisition around the airport area.*

According to him, the works on the terminal expansion are a priority of the company, given that the movements of air passengers in recent years have exceeded the available capacity. "Funding for the terminal expansion project comes from our internal cash of Rp 2 trillion; we expect the work process can already begin in this coming October," he said on Tuesday (24 June).*

Garuda to Operate Timika-Sorong-Manado Route

...

Rettob remarked that Garuda will take over the Timika-Sorong-Manado route, which was last operated in February by Merpati Nusantara, a government airline that had stopped operations as it was facing financial difficulties. He added that Merpati Nusantara had halted operations in the region since February, and the transport ministry has offered several routes left vacant by Merpati to other airlines. Garuda Indonesia and Sriwijaya Air have indicated their interest to operate these routes.

Garuda Indonesia sought approval to operate the Jakarta-Makassar-Timika-Jayapura route on a daily basis while Sriwijaya Air has opted to operate the Timika-Sorong-Manado route thrice a week. The Moses Kilangin airport authority in Timika has agreed to a time slot arrangement for the two airlines.

Singapore Airlines Eyes Eastern Indonesia Flight

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - SilkAir, a subsidiary company of Singapore Airlines, has targeted the flight market in eastern Indonesia to boost its flights operation. "The eastern part of Indonesia has a potential market, which we believe will increase in the future," stated the Assistant for Sales and Reservations of SilkAir Yumiana, as quoted by Antara News.

Yumiana said SilkAir has been operating in Makassar since 2013. "Makassar city is the air hub for eastern Indonesian flights, thus the passengers not only come from the city, but also from other areas in eastern Indonesia," Yumiana pointed out. According to Yumiana, SilkAir has three flight schedules in a week, with an average 80 percent of the seats occupied. The total number of seats occupied will increase during school holidays.

Indonesia on Verge of Opening Its Skies to Southeast Asian Airlines
By*Erwida Maulia*on 12:10 am, Sep 24, 2014

Jakarta. Five Indonesian cities are ready to fully open their skies to unlimited flights operated by Southeast Asian airlines, ahead of an agreement to liberalize the regional aviation market that comes into force next year, Indonesian officials have said. The Transportation Ministry says all the necessary documents ahead of the implementation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ “Open Skies” deal have been signed by the government — leaving only the ratification up to the president. With legislators not part of the process, no major hurdles are expected in the ratification set to complete by the end of the year, says Djoko Murdjatmojo, the ministry’s director of air transportation.

“There are a lot of documents concerning the implementation of the Open Skies [agreement]; we’ve signed them all, but we have yet to ratify it,” Djoko told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday. “We expect the ratification to be in the form of a presidential regulation, and we’re currently still preparing materials for that.” Among the documents that have been signed are three “primary” ones, namely the Asean Multilateral Agreement on Air Services; the Asean Multilateral Agreement on the Full Liberalization of Air Freight Services; and the Asean Multilateral Agreement on Full Liberalization of Passenger Air Services. The five cities set to liberalize their skies next year are Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, Denpasar and Makassar.

Indonesia looks east
Neelam Mathews - IHS Jane's Airport Review
05 October 2014

Angkasa Pura I has announced it expects to complete land acquisition by the end of 2014 for the development of Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, eastern Indonesia. Makassar processed 9.62 million passengers in 2013. State-run Angkasa Pura I wants to expand passenger capacity to 25 million per annum in the first phase by 2017, rising to 50 million by 2030 with a third runway and additional passenger terminal.

Angkasa Pura I also plans to construct an airport city to develop Makassar as a hub for east Indonesia "featuring new hotels, international hospitals, and business centres". Makassar is already the main gateway for flights into eastern Indonesia, and is a regional hub for flag carrier Garuda Indonesia.

Foreign Parties Interested
Meanwhile, AP I has partnered with several foreign investors to develop a number of airports. Those foreign investors interested in developing airports in Indonesia include Vinci Airport, which has previously managed an airport in Cambodia; the company is interested in developing the airports in Makassar and Manado.

"A lot of partners are seeking to have cooperation through MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) that will be realised in the near future," said Corporate Secretary of PT Angkasa Pura I, Farid Indra Nugraha. Farid added that the investors are interested to participate in developing a number of airports in Indonesia through joint venture establishments for the management of the airports, or there may be three schemes to be developed, with the concept of operation and management.

Makassar airport sees decrease in passengers
The Jakarta Post, Makassar | Archipelago | Sat, December 27, 2014, 10:27 AM

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi, has seen a decrease in the number of passengers arriving and departing this year. Airport operator PT Angkasapura I recorded that by the end of November this year, the number of passengers arriving at the airport decreased by five percent while the number of passengers departing from the airport decreased by 10 percent.

The company’s spokesperson Rio Hendarto said the number of inbound passengers from January to November was 3,339,362 while the number of outbound passengers for the same period last year was 3,499,362. Rio blamed the decrease on natural disasters that frequently caused flight delays or even airport closures, as well as Merpati airlines, which stopped serving routes to eastern areas of Indonesia. There are currently 12 domestic and two international flight companies operating at the airport.

Five dead in construction accident at Hasanuddin Airport
Andi Hajramurni, The Jakarta Post, Makassar | Archipelago | Mon, March 09, 2015, 10:30 PM

A hangar under construction at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi, collapsed on Monday, killing five and injuring 14 others. Two of the five victims died on the spot, where workers were completing the hangar’s 25-meter-high roof. One of the injured workers, Yakob Jumair Dajo, 34, said that the workers felt a tremor moments before the incident, but they went on working. “I did not fall to the ground because I was holding onto a rope,” he said, adding that some 10 workers fell to the ground.

The construction of the hangar began last year, with 50 to 60 workers present, and was set to be completed this year. Sultan Hasanuddin Airport spokesman Tamar Jaya said the airport authority would evaluate the construction project. “We have an internal team [for the evaluation].”
