Project to help lure larger conventions, set new bar for luxury

The developer of the 50-story, $350 million Fairmont hotel planned for downtown Austin said Friday that the project will break ground in November at Red River Street and East Cesar Chavez.

Developer Doug Manchester, president of Manchester Texas Financial Group, released new details Friday about the project. He also released a new market study highlighting how much convention business Austin is losing annually because it doesn’t have enough hotel rooms downtown, an issue local convention officials and other experts have talked about for years...

The Fairmont final design.

They have already set up the construction trailer, and tent for a ground breaking ceremony soon. Crews have been out there all day preparing the site for construction.

I really like the new design better but I'm a sucker for boxes.

Hard to tell what it will look like in the daytime, but I think I like it better than the original design. It harkens back to art deco... RCA/GE Buildingish.

Damn, it looks good! The layout reminds me of the JW Marriott but I guess a massive podium and skinny flat tower is what works best for hotels like these?

Sure does, also once this building starts construction it will be Austin tallest building, eclipsing The Austonian by 8ft.

Very nice, we just need a supertall or 2 downtown on Congress Ave to "balance" out the skyline.

Give it time. Austin still has other large towers (300- 600ft.) range in the works.

False alarm on the ground breaking part. Those trailers that were park there a few weeks back were for a home and garden show I believe. But not to worry ground breaking for this project is near and will keep you all informed once I hear something.

Good for Austin! The new design is stunning in my opinion. 10/10 My only wish would have been 87 more meters

It's going to stick out quite nicely. From east of downtown where I- 35 runs parallel north and south, the building is going to be massive. Now from the west, it really isn't going to be noticeable unless your south of the river or driving on Mopac.

They could of made the podium a little better. But in all imo it's not that bad.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be another false alarm. But all last week a small ATT crew with a digger was doing some utility work around the periphery of the site. The work wasn't extensive enough to close the lot for parking, but it's still a hopeful sign.
