The advertisers of political ads don't care to give such information. They are more interested in giving pictures of the great leaders. Do they do such kind of advertisements in London?

State govt opts for PPP to beautify Ganges

http://www.business-standard.com/ind...ganges/444617/

Quote:
The West Bengal government will go for public-private partnership to beautify the Ganges river front in a bid to fulfill Kolkata's London dream, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Tuesday.

“I want to turn Kolkata into London. But we don't have the fund and infrastructure like London, to carry out the entire project. London is like a theme to us. Now, we are starting the project in a small way. We will look at a public-private partnership (PPP) model to complete the work,” Banerjee said, inaugurating a pilot project to beautify the river front. In the pilot project one km of river front will be beautified and a 15-20 metre path-way will be constructed

“The entire beautification project would be done in phases. The Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) has prepared the comprehensive master plan on river front beautification and its commercial uses. In the first phase work will be done in one Km,” she said. Though she did not comment on the fund required for the project, she admitted that the state's financial crisis is a major cause of concern.

“I believe once we are done with pilot project, people will like to partner the project and the funding issue will be resolved. There is business opportunity also as the project will turn the city into an attractive tourist destination. We are also seeking help from the railways and shipping ministry to help the project,” she said. Majority of the river bank is either owned by the Railways or by the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT).

Last year, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) and Indian Railways Friday inked a deal for beautifying the Ganges river front in the presence of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. After Trinamool Congress came to power, the state government has now taken over the project.

The beautification plan intends to beautify and rebuild a total of 20 km (10 km in each side of the river) of the river front.

I don't know whether it is a practice or not. I guess the purpose of these ads are just make us remember that the MLAs, MPs or Ministers of the area whom we "elected" are doing some work.

Mamata kick-starts Ganga beautification project

Quote:
Kolkata: In a step to fulfilling her pledge to spruce up Kolkata, West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee kick-started an ambitious project to beautify a stretch along the Ganges on Tuesday.

The pilot project will involve giving a new look to the one kilometer stretch along the banks of the river.

Later, the project will cover nine more kilometers along the river bank, from Pramamik Ghat to Taktaghat in the city's southern fringes.

"We have plans of beautifying Kolkata for a long time. We have taken up London as the theme. This project will propel eco-friendly tourism," said Banerjee at the programme.

"If we plan, we can make the city more beautiful," she said after inaugurating the project at Millennium Park on the banks of the river.

Kolkata Port Trust, Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Indian Railways have teamed up with the state government in the project.

D.C. Mitra, project coordinator of RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Services), said: "A 15-20 meter wide pathway will be made along the one kilometer stretch.

"All the ghats in this stretch will be fully restored as many are in very bad shape."

Banerjee accused the previous Left Front government of siphoning off funds which came from the central government under the Ganga Action Plan.

Wonder if pictures and plans of that model they are showing is available in the public domain. It looks like a pretty wide park in that model. Where is that much wide land available next to the ghats?

Mamata’s Hooghly eyes Thames high

The pilot phase of the project, covering a 900-metre stretch from Millennium Park’s northern face to Baje Kadamtala Ghat, will be financed by the tourism department and the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC). The Rs 36-crore plan includes a 15-metre-wide pathway and a modern ferry terminal.

So wouldn’t such a massive beautification project entail evicting residents of the slums along the riverfront?

“Two or three small shops may have to be shifted. They will be provided alternative sites close by. There will be no eviction,” Mamata promised.

The inter-state bus terminus near Babughat would have to be relocated, though.

RITES has suggested that the width of the riverbank be extended with deck slabs.

“The pathway will be built in a way that at least a two-and-a-half-km stretch is available for a leisurely walk along the river. Deck slabs will help extend the bank by 14 to 28 metres,” a CMC official said.

Do you think that "6 months" is a feasible deadline?? I think this is another impractical deadline like in the case of "Metro" she gave a 6 months deadline which can only be completed in more than 4 years. I guess she meant work will start within 6 months.

The 6 months deadline for the 1km stretch is feasible.. There would be a special award if the pilot is completed within 4 months..

Hello everyone this is my first post... though I am visiting SSC for may be last 7-8 yrs... one of the reason I choose to register SSC is to convey one message that as an outsider I was not feeling good about kolkata forums anymore... some old forumers are more into bashing MB than having constructive suggestions... this may offend you but I think we are loosing the charm... more we go into politics more we loose the main purpose of this forum... my request to all forumers,if I can do so, is to appreciate what is currently happening...as I always appreciate what BB tried some times back... our bengali culture restricts us in believing that such a humongous task can be done..but my only submission is that ,a single lady did something which no other even dreamed...she was laughed at..ridiculed..tortured...close to death many times...26 days hunger strike...(i haven't heard anything in recent history) ...so lets admit she is different than most of us... BB with all his good intention failed, hence bengal suffered...we should not let MB fail cos this will be the last nail in bengal's coffin... I wish when I return to my city I can say to my daughter with my head held high... my city is as good as your city!!

No one is "bashing MB" here. We live in a democratic society. Even if you are an angel you have to face the criticism..

Anyway, welcome to the forum
