Possible in less than 100 years, if we go for or afford to have China style development. Case in point - Shanghai.

KMC should make a guideline that buildings coming up in certain areas should not be less than certain heights. Specially in the central CBD area, we need tall buildings.

@Joy_ghosh02, samrat_m, studdmanster: I was just talking about the embankment. Sure the buildings look picturesque, but so does the embankment. Actually my mistake, the embankment can hardly be seen in these pictures.

Here are the original size pictures to observe the quality of embankment they have done. Please be sure to note the beauty of the greenery, superior quality of concretisation and proper railings

I agree .. having stayed at Chicago for the last 3 years .. Chicago Lakefront and Riverfront are both amazing... It has one of the best architecture. Incidentally Sam Pitroda, Mamata's advisor stays in Chicago he may suggest something in this front as well.

Sovan to meet Antony over river beautification project
5 September 2011

statesman news service
KOLKATA, 5 SEPT: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will urge the Defence minister Mr AK Antony not to raise any objection over Hooghly river beautification project, mayor Mr Sovan Chatterjee said today.
Mr Chatterjee will meet Mr Antony tomorrow in Delhi regarding the matter.
It may be recalled that the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (Rites) and KMC took up the Hooghly river beautification project. One kilometer stretch of the bank on the Hooghly river will be beautified as pilot project within six months and other nine kilometre stretch will be beautified in phases.
The chief minister, Miss Mamata Banerjee, has already asked KMC and Rites to complete Hooghly River bank beautification project before deadline.
Mr Chatterjee said the Army raised objection as most of the area where the proposed beautification will take place falls under their jurisdiction. He will inform Mr Antony on the details of the project and urge him to allow the project.
A senior official of the KMC said that School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) has studied the 10-km stretch along with the Hooghly River for this development project and earmarked the places for commercial establishment, cultural centre, sports complex and transport terminus.
But Army officers raised objections apprehending that concrete structure would be set up for implementing this project which is strictly prohibited in this jurisdiction, said the official. Meanwhile, member, mayor-in-council (health) Mr Atin Ghosh, said that KMC will take over the Star Theatre after the lease expires in February, 2012.
The present owner pays Rs 10 lakh per month. But Mr Ghosh said that it was mentioned in the contract that the owner must share the profit but the KMC has not received any money from the owner.
Theatres will be staged regularly once we take over the Star Theatre where only films are screened now.

KOLKATA: The chief minister's pet riverfront beautification project might get a Japanese touch. A delegation of the International Technical Cooperation Division - a local government body of Yokohama City of Japan - called on urban development minister Firhad Hakim on Wednesday. With them was a company that has developed the sea-front to give the city of Yokohama a new look.

Last month, Mamata Banerjee took the first step towards fulfilling her pledge to spruce up Kolkata and kick-started an ambitious project to beautify the stretch along the Hooghly. The pilot project will involve a kilometer along the river. Later, the project will cover nine more kilometers along the river bank from Pramanik Ghat to Taktaghat in the city's southern fringes.

The Japanese delegation, led by Toru Hashimoto, manager, Internal Technical Cooperation Division, also met Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) authorities to talk about jointly developing Rajarhat-New Town. Hakim told reporters at Writers' Buildings: "The delegation that met us today had experts who participated in developing the sea-front along Yokohama city 10 years ago." The minister said his government was interested -- especially because these experts were involved in giving Yokohama a major makeover before it became Japan's first international port.

"They would specify what kind of trees should be planted on the banks of the Hooghly and the kind of construction that would suit the soil along the riverfront. We could do with such expert hands," explained Hakim. The division has attained international acclaim for pioneering eco-friendly projects across the world.

The state government will also seek financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to develop various infrastructure projects. The team visited the Hooghly riverfront and later went to New Town. They were impressed with the way the township was coming up.

Hidco is working on quite a few development projects at present, like developing a huge waterbody into an eco-tourism spot. A strategic alliance with this division will be beneficial to develop the township, said Sen.

Also, the state government is in touch with the World Bank to get financial aid to develop civic infrastructure of small towns and cities within the Kolkata Metropolitan Area (KMA) like Chandernagore, Baruipur and North Dum Dum.
