ABUJA | World Trade Centre | 37 fl | Mixed-Use | U/C

Jonathan to commission $1bn Abuja World Trade Centre

Quote:
Bala Mohammed, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Thursday disclosed that arrangements have been concluded for the ground breaking of the $1 billion Abuja World Trade Centre (AWTC).

President Goodluck Jonathan is to perform the groundbreaking ceremony at the 37-storey Abuja World Trade Centre located on 6.102 hectares of land along Constitution Road, Central Business District, Abuja in September, 2011.

Mohammed disclosed that the investor, First Intercontinental Limited, a subsidiary of Churchgate Investments Limited, has obtained a WTC licence from the United States World Trade Centre to replicate the project in Nigeria.

The minister added that the administration has already attracted $2.6 billion direct foreign investment from a US company, Balkan Group, for the development of Down Town project and infrastructure.

According to him, World Trade Centre, a non-profit and non-political association, was established to promote and facilitate world trade and provides a platform to the world by connecting nearly 300 cities and 85 countries through a powerful array of information and services, adding that over 750,000 companies are affiliated with World Trade Centre Association (WTCA).

The Minister noted that the project, on completion, “will no doubt launch Nigeria into the global economic arena and indeed the African sub-region,” saying that the mega-multi-use complex consists of high-rise residential and service apartment towers, office towers as well as centre iconic tower, conference facilities, retail shopping mall with food and beverage as well as entertainment facilities.

The N152 billion project is jointly owned by the FCT administration and First Intercontinental Properties Limited, a subsidiary of Church Gate Group under the Public Private Partnership (PPP).

A World Trade Centre estimated to gulp about N156 billion, is to be constructed in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital, Abuja.

The Centre which is billed to occupy about 40,000 sq metres, would have a Diplomatic Status.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed, while on a visit to the site of the proposed Centre, said the first phase of the project is to be completed by June 2013.

Mohammed, who said the funds for the construction of the Centre are to be sourced from local banks and real estate developers, said the site for the project was handed over to Abuja Investment Company Limited ( AICL) to develop as a befitting world class shopping all.

He said the scope of the project was expanded to a mega multi-use complex consisting of high-rise residential and service apartments towers, office towers, including a central iconic tower, conference facilities and a retail shopping mall, with food and beverages as well as entertainment facilities.

“This project is a good example of a successful public private partnership, and it will be used as a model to implement other upcoming PPP projects in the FCT, such as the Boulevard, the Central park and Botanical gardens and the Area 10 mixed development projects,” he said.

The Minister, said the centre is billed to be an Economic Development platform and a gateway to the world, by connecting its members to the Global trade community in nearly 300 cities and 85 countries through a powerful array of information and services.

“Because of the high profile and global scope of the project, the FCTA has already written the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to obtain a diplomatic status for the World Trade Centre Site.

The Managing Director of Churchgate Group, Vinay Mahtani, said the construction of the centre has already provided job for about 600 people with the number expected to rise to 1500 as the development progresses.

He said with the Centre located in prime real estate location, a ring road is to be constructed around the site to give it an unrivalled access with a local and national railway under construction just a stone throw away from the World Trade Centre.

construction has already started on the foundation of the complex. Even though the 'ground breaking' is going to take place in September.

MODs please rename the title to under construction [U/C]

im happy it's not in lagos, we need to defuse the importance of lagos to the rest of the country. i would like to see nigeria be bold enough to put on in Lagos and Abuja, we seem to think we can only do things once and act like we're not half the size of the united states

Not necessarily
But this is a WORLD TRADE center, and we all know as Nigerians, that Lagos is the financial heartbeat of not Just Nigeria, but the entire region.

Anyway, goodluck to the developers............
BTW: I think Nigeria's next economic forum will be held either in Dutse, or Yola {Not sure Yet}

Abuja doesent need a development like the Eko Atlantic.
There is more than enough land in Abuja, and there is no risk of Coastal errosion.
They simply dont need it.

Selfishness Kini???/
I am simply saying the truth, how can they decide to build a trade center in Abuja, when there is Lagos, Or EVEN Port Harcourt??
Simply doesent make much sense to me......... Well, i dont know about the others.
Abuja needs to be beautiful and Organized, clean, laid back, Be a cultural hub, Political center, and all that.
But the last thing we need abuja to be , is a FINANCIAL Hub, cause that would be disastrous.

Actually many countries have multiple world trade centers in multiple cities around their country. For example the United States currently has 13 world trade centers in 13 different cities, (not including NYC).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._trade_centers

I also remember reading an article saying the government was going to build trade centers, Either financial or world I forgot, in other cities like port harcourt, lagos, kano etc.

Spot on. In fact, Lagos has its own WTC project (designed by the S. African architectural firm, Co-Arc International).
