Ah there you go!

As such, Seattle should be striving to be the glamorous northwest coast city of America. It has the right location for it. A large part of it is in its waterfront. Having a big ugly noisy viaduct isn't it. How you dress it up in large part will make or break your city's image.

Tons of pictures of the James Corner Field Operations design here. Warning: it's over 150 pages.

Nice cheap PR for new waterfront - chairs on short cable leashes at pier 62/63.
Don't think I'll find mhays using these as there's no shade!

No, Eric, a human. We don't like heat, glare, or sunburns.

Are they re-designing their own design, or just re-designing the present waterfront with their original design?

I can't wait till eight years from now when (hopefully) it will be complete!

I don't think they have a design yet based on the previous meetings. Sounds like this is an update to see where they're headed with schematic design.

What do you call all of the renderings we've seen if they aren't a design?

Vision proposals? Pretty pictures to get us interested?

I just checked waterfrontseattle.org and I don't see any real designs just a few conceptual renderings. As BoulderGrad says these are pretty pictures to get us interested in the possibilities. I assume the upcoming meeting will really show some early design for the entire waterfront not just a couple of renderings.

If you've worked in any kind of engineering or design discipline, the words "Preliminary" and "design" are usually translated as "pretty" and "pictures"

No. I'm certain they mean the same that they mean in other industries. That means it's a rough draft of sorts and certainly not the final product but not a random assortment of "pretty pictures." You're telling me they have no intention of going down that design path even though that design direction is why they were selected by the powers that be for the job? No.

Believe the industry guys. They know what they're talking about.

In this case what you've seen represent some initial concepts. Pretty pictures is about right. They're concept renderings.

It would be ok to call them "predesign."

That's laughable. At what point does it become a design? It IS a design now it's just the first draft. It will obviously change as things proceed based on the feedback they receive but the city didn't pick them over the other firms based on 'pretty pictures.' They picked them for their design- for their vision for the project.

But you can call it whatever you want.

Give it a rest! You obviously aren't connected to this stuff beyond being a fan. We are.
