Haha wrong AGAIN. My best friend of 15 years' Mother is a principal at her Design firm and she disagrees with you. She agrees with me that these are simply just the first designs for this project and even if they change dramatically they are in fact more than random 'pretty pictures.' YOU can give it a rest.

Woo hoo! Another step closer to all this being reality!
DJC.com October 14, 2011 Hitachi Zosen gets contract to build TBM By JOURNAL STAFF Japan's Hitachi Zosen Corp. on Wednesday signed a contract with Seattle Tunnel Partners to supply the machine that will dig the deep-bore tunnel along the Seattle waterfront. “Signing this contract gets us one step closer to taking down the vulnerable Alaskan Way Viaduct,” said Gov. Chris Gregoire in a statement. “This state-of-the-art technology allows us to keep SR 99 — and the region's economy — open for business during construction to replace this critical state highway.” |

I honestly don't care how long someones been a member if I don't agree with what they post. It's my right to say what I want just as it's theirs to say what they want. I choose my words carefully enough to stand behind them entirely. If you don't like it you are more than welcome to look past them. Its really no bother to me.
Good God a lot of you are wound so tightly. You've also built up these ridiculous "online expert" complexes. Well I'm not that impressed with most of you and I really don't care if every single one of you don't like me. I haven't broken any rules of the forum. |

Just don't expect responses if you ask a question with this kind of attitude. I think everyone on here is pretty humble.

That's why I called them "predesign." They're concept illustrations. "Pretty pictures" was an exageration but not by much. They may or may not have anything to do with the directions the team goes from here.
Corner got hired based on reputation, a willingness to collaborate, business terms, willingness to comply with Seattle contract requirements, etc., as well as some combination of people liking their concepts and/or thinking they would work well through a multi-year process with a lot of other players to help come up with better ones. Some architects will draw a squiggly line and call it the start of design. But usually (particularly to an engineer or contractor), it goes beyond "concept illustration" only after it's based on actual dimensions and real money is being spent, i.e. true concept design. The attitude won't help. Last edited by mhays; October 14th, 2011 at 05:26 PM. |

All I was looking for was acknowledgment that 'pretty pictures' was in fact an exaggeration. I never said it was the end all be all final design. I acknowledged that it will definitely change throughout the process. But there was no recognition of the fact that these renderings were anything more than random 'pretty pictures' when they most definitely are.
The cold know-it-all attitude isn't cute from this end either. |

Actually, I am not trying to burn anybody by asking about the ignore feature. I like this forum for additive, constructive discourse. There is enough negativity and bravado in the world, I hope it doesn't invade this site. Hence, those that are subtractive, not additive, I would like to never see their posts.

Not only will it cut down on trolling (Not referring to you LCIII, I don't consider you a troll), but also the pointless unsupported opinion comments like this one referring to the NYC subway system:

I liked todays front page of the Times showing the section of the viaduct about to be torn down and inviting the public to come down and take pictures when the demo starts

It's true, the Waterfront renderings are merely design concepts. The team is still gathering input and, at this point, anything could change. For example, the hot tubs on the pier may never come to fruition, but that kind of out of the box thinking could lead somewhere down the road. These illustrations represent what the designers have envisioned could be possible, but doesn't necessarily represent any concrete direction.
I invite you to come to the next Waterfront presentation on the 27th to hear James Corner speak. If you watch the archived footage from his last presentation, he does spend some time explaining the illustrative nature of the renderings. It's definitely worth a watch if you are following this process. |

Here's what James Corner said about the concept renderings on his last visit in May:
"Here we are philosophizing on potentials for the waterfront...We've been listening to people, we continue to visit, we continue to learn. And we're still in a process right now of listening and learning, but we also have a responsibility to sort of come up with some ideas that we can put on the table, that we can float, that we can provoke you with, that we can stimulate a conversation around. we hope to be able to capture your imagination in a positive way in a constructive way. What would be most useful for us in the next few weeks is to hear of, in the next few weeks, which of these ideas really really resonate and are a foundation upon which we can build, and which of these ideas raise questions or concerns and how we might better answer those." These renderings are meant to begin a conversation and a thought process. The strongest ideas will survive the design process, but at this point, they are pure fantasy. I don't see the rush in coming up with a finished plan just yet -we do have five years, after all, until the tunnel is finished and the viaduct is taken down.

So he too thinks they are more than just "pretty pictures." That was an extreme oversimplification. I already acknowledged that in no way is this supposed to be the final product but it's definitely more than "pretty pictures."
