Obviously, the renderings weren't for decorative purposes. The point is they're not design.

(Why am I bothering?)

This pretty much sums it up. Theres a huge difference between a design and a conceptual study.

And there's also a huge difference between those and just random "pretty pictures."

In honor of the demolition having begun last night, here's an almost 24 minute long video from a few years back stating the case for tearing down the Viaduct and reclaiming the waterfront. I'm sure some of you have seen it but regardless it's great to know what so many of us have been supporting for so many years is finally happening.

Yessssss. I have never felt such a sadistic rush watching the viaduct get torn to shreds.

The random set of pretty pictures that were shown tonight were excellent. Thy weren't terribly different from the last set of random pretty pictures but the changes were all upgrades in my opinion. This project is going to be such a huge thing for the city!

I like the idea of the tugboat. Some of my favorite beach memories are of playing on ship wrecks as a kid.

OOh, like the idea of a Funicular on Union. That leads right up to the arrival area for the Four Seasons.

The crowd laughed when he presented that part. They laughed at the pool and hot tubs too.

Would the funicular be on the ground, or would it be on some slanting structure built above the ground, leading up to the street above? That's what I wonder.

Pittsburgh has a famous one of these. Pretty much by definition it's above ground - like an escalator you sit in/on.

Pittsburgh and Hong Kong have much bigger hills.

Ours would be fun but mostly useful for lazy our unfit people. We even have an elevator at Virginia, which gets some of its use, I suspect, because people don't see the stairs down.

If we're going to create something like that, the south end of First Hill is a far more legit reason, with a lot more grade change. Particularly as Yesler Terrace gets redone.

Speaking of which, it would be interesting if there were a thread on here about the future Yesler Terrace redevelopment, wouldn't it? Or maybe there is but I've missed it.

I remember something kind of like that called a carmelit in Haifa Isreal, up mt. Carmel.
It doesn't go very far (mount Carmel isn't much of a mountain) but it is unique.

Pittsburgh has two, maybe a half-mile apart. I'd say they go pretty far...wild guess a 400' vertical on a hill too steep for streets.
