I had no idea about China Southern, but certainly not surprising. This will definitely be good for JKIA's journey to becoming an important cargo gateway. Thanks for the info.

I don't think it's official yet, but it was posted on the KLM blog when the Safari Connection started in February.

"Together with our partner China Southern Airlines, we offer the most cargo frequencies and connections between China and Europe. China Southern is enthusiastic about this new freight route and declared this week that it is ready to start participating in the Safari Connection. This is great news! Lets roll out the red carpet soon!"
http://blog.klm.com/hunting-for-busi...ntinents/3587/

As the current route is: Amsterdam Guangzhou Nairobi Lagos Nairobi Amsterdam we might see a direct connection from Nairobi to China when China Southern starts to participate.

KQ signs $1.9 billion financing deal

Quote:
Kenya Airways has signed a 1.9 billion-dollar financing deal with the African Export Import Bank Afreximbank for 20 new Boeing and Embraer airplane models. The deal which translates to 159 billion shillings at the current exchange rates, will see the national carrier make significant strides in its quest to expand and at the same time modernize its fleet within its 10-year strategic plan dubbed 'Project Mawingu'. The credit-line agreement comes just a few days after The Pride of Africa's 1.03 billion shares it acquired through a rights issue started trading at the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Kenyan Airlines apologizes to woman forced to sit next to dead passenger
(WCARN.com/Alaskan Dispatcher/Airnation.net/Global Post, June 29)

Quote:
Kenya Airways refunded a woman half her ticket cost after she spent an overnight flight sitting next to a dead man.

Lena Pettersson, a journalist with Radio Sweden, boarded a flight in

Amsterdam and immediately noticed the man next to her was unwell.

"He was sweating and having seizures," she told Sverigesradio.se. "Air hostesses were there all along, but the plane took off anyway."

The attendants put out a call for any passengers who might be able to help, and someone eventually began heart massage on the man, The Local reported.

It didn't help, and the man died.

While the crew moved other passengers near the man, said to be in his 30s, there was nowhere for Pettersson or her friend to relocate.

"Of course it was unpleasant, but I am not a person who makes a fuss," she said, according to The Local.

Flight attendants didn't know the best course of action, so they wrapped the man in a blanket and left him in the middle aisle, Expressen.se reported.

Pettersson said he was rather tall, and his feet were mere inches from her.

After Pettersson returned from holiday, she approached Air Kenya for compensation, and received about US$715 (roughly half her ticket price) and an apology.

"I am happy with it. I think it was a reasonable substitute," she told Expressen.

KQ related news.......

Kenya seeks pacts to increase flight routes
http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/K...u/-/index.html

Quote:
Kenya will negotiate air service agreements with 13 countries and review existing route pacts this fiscal year to allow local airlines more room to compete with global operators.

Transport ministry acting director of Air Transport Nicholas Bodo said last week the new agreements will allow Kenya to expand its aviation links to Qatar, Djibouti, Gabon, Mozambique, Mauritius, South Sudan, Namibia, Seychelles, Lebanon, Niger, Philippines, Algeria and Vietnam.

This was requested by players in the airline industry and we expect that they will consider having operations in those countries, said the Transport PS Cyrus Njiru during a Kenya Private Sector Alliance transport stakeholders forum in Nairobi last week.

The ministry started talks with Angola, Canada and Mexico but some were yet to be completed. Agreements were sealed with the Gambia, Zambia and Australia last year.

Kenya Airways (KQ) last year asked the government to pursue flight deals with Mexico to use it as an entry point into South and North America.

KQ had witnessed growth in the number of clients flying to the region via its code-sharing agreements and that is what prompted their request, said Mr Bodo. KQ is pursuing an ambitious expansion strategy that has seen it acquire new planes and hire new pilots.

Kenya Airways passenger haulage flat in Q1
http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/0...8IPEBC20120725
Quote:
Kenya Airways carried a total number of passengers in its first quarter ended June similar to that in the same period last year, as a drop in its European routes was offset by growth in its African destinations.

It carried a total of 841,238 passengers while the cabin factor was down at 65.5 percent, it said in a statement. It did not say what the cabin factor was in the same period last year.

It cut the capacity on European routes by almost 20 percent after the protracted euro zone crisis began to bite, it said.

Passengers hauled to the far and near east was unchanged while those carried to African destinations rose by 2.9 percent on the back of strong growth in routes like Juba, South Sudan.

Kenya Airways latest E190 takes to the skies in Brazil
http://www.eturbonews.com/30853/keny...s-skies-brazil

Quote:
The delivery of Kenya Airways 36th bird is now imminent as the aircraft was put through a vigorous in-flight testing regime over the past two days, ahead of the formal handover later this week at the Embraer assembly plant in San Jose Dos Campos.

The aircraft, once it joins the fleet at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), will be deployed on regional and medium distance routes across the African continent and is, as all other Kenya Airways aircraft, configured in a Premium and Economy class section, offering 12 business class seats in a 2x1 layout and 84 economy class seats in a 2x2 layout.

The Embraers are playing a crucial role towards achieving Kenya Airways target of connecting every political and commercial capital on the continent with Nairobi by the end of 2013, using this type of medium-distance jet alongside the proven B737NGs and, in particular, on select Southern and Western African routes, the B767 and B777.

IFC To Loan Kenya Airways $60m As Part Of East African Investment Strategy

VENTURES AFRICA – The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is at an advanced stage of loan talks with Kenya Airways as the airlines prepare for a 7 billion shillings ($60 million) finance package as part of the 34 billion shillings ($400 million) funding the World Bank’s investment arm plans for the East African nation before June 2013.

According to Business Daily, the outgoing IFC director for eastern and southern Africa Jean Philippe Prosper said: “We have agreed with Kenya Airways on the terms of the loan, but we have not signed it yet. We will do the signing in the next few months.”

The first instalment of the financing which is expected to expand operations would fund the airline’s pre-delivery payment for nine Boieng 787-800 Dreamliner aircrafts.

State seeks control of Kenya Airways
http://www.nation.co.ke/business/new...z/-/index.html

IN SUMMARY:

The government wants greater control of the management of Kenya Airways ahead of scheduled recruitment of the airlines new boss after it became the largest shareholder in June.

It is understood that Treasury wants to take over the role of designating top executives at the airline, which has been a preserve of Dutch airline KLM, since it now has the largest stake in the airline.

Who owns what at nation carrier:

  • The Government of Kenya has two seats on the KQ board, represented by Transport PS Cyrus Njiru and Finance PS Joseph Kinyua.

  • KLMs two seats are occupied by Mr Rob Schipper and Mr Peter Hartman.

  • After the rights issue, the Kenya governments shareholding rose to 29.8 per cent, up from 23pc, while that of KLM increased marginally to 26.73pc, from to 26pc.

  • The total Kenyan shareholding (government and local investors) has declined to 55.24 per cent from 62.8 per cent.

  • However, kenya Airways still retains its national carrier designation as the minimum local shareholding required is 51 per cent

  • Foreigners now have 44.76 per cent shareholding, compared with 37.20 per cent previously.

They took delivery of 4 Embrear E190s this year (and have 7 more on order). They are just a bit smaller then the 737-300s, but can fly the same routes. So yes, they do have the aircraft to replace the 3 that are now converted into freighters.
