Over 450 000 for 2010. But figures are excepted to grow in 2012. Qatar and Turkish will start flights to Rwanda. South African Airways will resume flights. RwandAir added new flights and frequencies this year and will add Juba (South Sudan) and Mumbai, in 2012.

But the airport ii too little for the traffic. On saturday you have the two long haul flights (klm and Brussels A330-200/A330-300) and you have to add RwandAir x 5 (2 CRJ, 1 B737-500 and 2 737-800), in only 1h30. They have only 10 check in desk and one baggage claim.

Construction of new airport terminal on course, says KAA
http://www.nation.co.ke/business/new...z/-/index.html

The Kenya Airports Authority has maintained that the planned construction of a $500 million (Sh42.5 billion) new terminal complex at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is on course, refuting claims that delays in securing a financier would jeopardise it.

Quote:
Rest In Summary:
  • Firm says it has set aside 10 per cent of the required capital to get the project started and will receive the rest as construction goes on
  • The initial plan also shows that the government was to finish a detailed design before May last year to allow for the construction from August last year to December 2013
  • KAA said it was still reviewing tender documents for firms interested in constructing the new airport terminal.
  • Last year, the authority said more than 100 local and multinational firms mainly from North America, Europe, Asia and Africa had shown interest in the project.

Balala asks Moroccan airline to speed up planned Kenya flights
http://www.the-star.co.ke/business/l...-kenya-flights

TOURISM Minister Najib Balala has asked officials of a Moroccan airline granted permission to operate in Kenya to speed up its planning and launch direct flights between the two countries soon. Balala who is in Morocco to market Kenya was optimistic that the new tourism diversification strategy embarked on by his ministry will improve the country's popularity.

The Moroccan airline Royal Air Maroc is expected to launch flights into Kenya soon and will be a key connection to the new North African tourism market. The Kenya government has rolled out a red carpet by clearing all red tapes on the way to allow the Royal Air Maroc to fly directly to Nairobi, a move that will have a direct benefit to the tourism sector and other businesses, said the minister.

Emerging Africa-Asia Market continues to grow with Korean Air service to Nairobi from Seoul
http://www.centreforaviation.com/ana...om-seoul-67005

Connections between Africa and Asia will grow from 21-Jun-2012 with Korean Air's seasonal three-times weekly service between Seoul and Nairobi, Kenya. The hub-to-hub flight will link Korean Air's Asian-focused hub to the extensive and growing African hub of fellow SkyTeam carrier Kenya Airways, which plans to serve every African capital city within five years.

The Africa-Asia market will boom this decade, according to Airbus projections that see Africa having the highest percentage growth of traffic to or from Asia. Korean Air's route follows charter services to Nairobi as well as the signing in Dec-2011 of a trade agreement between South Korea and Kenya.

Korean Air will be the only Asian airline to serve East Africa, which geographically and combined with a partner's hub allows for greater traffic feed across Africa. Asian airlines have predominantly focused on serving South Africa while African carriers serve multiple Asian points.

Global airlines to start operations at JKIA in April
http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/G...14/-/wy4k6w/-/
Quote:
At least five international carriers are expected to start using the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from April even as concerns about congestion at the hub persist.

Etihad and Korean Airlines will kick off scheduled flights from beginning of next month and June respectively with Air Dubai, Royal Air Maroc and Air Malawi following at unspecified dates according to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

Korea Airlines mid January began flying chartered flights to Nairobi, delivering the first batch of 120 tourists.

The 140-aircraft Skyteam member will be flying directly from its Incheon airport base to JKIA, opening a crucial access route from Asia to Africa. They will join 28 airlines operating scheduled flights into and out of JKIA at a time the national flag carrier, Kenya Airways, is planning a major expansion of its own raising prospects of more congestion.

Four carriers are already operating chartered flights from the airport as well as 19 cargo aircraft as the war for a piece of African air transport market takes shape.

KAA signs Sh55bn ($653.7 million USD) deal for new airport terminal
http://www.nation.co.ke/News/KAA+sig...b/-/index.html

IN SUMMARY
  • KAA argues that it put into consideration the business development strategy of the national carrier, Kenya Airways, in deciding on the master plan.

  • However, Kenya Airways (KQ) and the Vision 2030 secretariat have opposed the design being floated by the company which won the tender raising questions on the nature of consultations that took place with KQ.

  • Vision 2030 director-general Mugo Kibati has also said that his institution had nothing against the tender process but was opposed to the design of the new airport terminal on grounds that it is unfavourable for the expansion strategy of Kenya Airways.

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has signed the contract for the Sh55 billion airport tender with a Chinese firm in what is promising to bring to an end the controversy that has dogged the project for months.

A day after the Cabinet gave the go-ahead for the new terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the KAA moved to complete the deal for the project. The project – the Greenfield Terminal – is expected to take three years.

It will be undertaken by Anhui Construction Engineering Group (ACEG) in a joint venture with another Chinese firm, China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation (CATIC).

To avoid confusion:

The terminal u/c in the pictures in post 98 is the current terminal. It will expand capacity to 9 million.

The new terminal being built by Anhui and just recently signed by the KAA will expand capacity to 20 million from 9 million and be ready in 3 years.
