Yes, thats why it needs to be modernised as project called "Rail Baltica". And the looks of the routes part Rujiena-Mõisaküla are not according to Rail Baltica. Riga-Skulte-Pärnu-Tallin is more according Rail Baltica route.

Rail Baltica is in EU TEN-T project list. More of this topic in http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...20660&page=140 thread.

Why is Elektriraudtee buying diesel trains? Will they take over routes from Edelraudtee?

Government bought them and the whole diesel train deal eventually ended to Elektriraudtee (which is government owned company) ,because state and passengers are dissatisfied with Edelaraudtee (private company) service quality. Company has been leeching government subsidies, while at the same time keeping investments into rolling stock upgrades & service quality improvements in bare minimum.
And yes. By 2014-2015 most routes in Estonia will be operated by Elektriraudtee.

Oh,and...

First Stadler Flirt for Estonia has been completed!!

On 4th September first completed Stadler Flirt DMU was presented in Stadler Rail's factory in Siedlce,Poland. Train will now go through extensive testing period.

THE BEST Estonian FLIRT videos so far. (look at this guy's channel for a few more videos)

Also, this is a terrific photo of the two generation of EMUs side-by-side: http://gallery.balticrailpics.net/di...&cat=-10&pos=1

The longest trains to Tallinn come from Moscow (various change options) and Valga (change from Riga train).

Pärnu.

The original Valga-Pärnu narrow gauge railway , in 1896, went via Rujiena and Mõisaküla. This crosses the Latvian border, created 1917...1920, twice. In 1930-s, Estonia had plans to build a new Valga-Mõisaküla line, somewhere near Tõrva... but I do not quite remember the route details, nor how far the construction progress was when interrupted.

Pretty much the only way to get from Vienna to Tallinn by train is through Russia so just forget about the idea and fly Maybe if the Rail Baltic project goes through, you could try again in 15 years.

Not quite only, though. An alternative way has been tried:

1) Travel on Warsaw-St. Petersburg train through Belorussia and Lithuania to Latvia - get off in Daugavpils
2) Latvian domestic train from Daugavpils to Riga
3) Again Latvian train from Riga to Valga just over Estonian border
4) Connect in Valga to Estonian train to Tallinn.

Wow. Old and new side by side. So, who's going to get the RVRs once all the Stadlers have been delivered?

They're still selling the old trains, as far as I know. I don't think there have been any buyers yet.

Yeah, who would like to buy these old things?

Maybe only some museums, but even then they need to scrap most of the trains...

Our Stadlers seem to have two tone horns. What you hear on that video (and most other captured videos) is the "friendly" horn. More louder "angry" horn will probably scare off any blind and deaf pensioners wandering on railway tracks
