Trump Tower.........and (oh wait, that one did happen, just not to be THE tallest building and his old needle design was, I believe, meant for NYC and not Chicago). Sorry had to join in. Would hope this gets built but again at the rate it seems that Chicago proposals go ahead it seems unfortunately slim.

Waterview is revived as a 65 story rental tower.

It will be finished but the hotel and ritzy condos are out so it will only be apartments and probably 300 ft shorter. A good outcome nonetheless. Chicago didn't get the Spire, the Waldorf and the full height Waterview because the market can't sustain a large number of new $10+ million condos. The economics of building supertalls in the US are really brutal given the enormous costs.

The sad thing is if we didn't have the dumbest President is US history last decade who wasted billions of American money in Iraq the Chicago Spire, Waterview and The Waldorf would all be built by now. Thanks for the great recession Mr. Bush.

Still, Chicago has one of the best skylines on earth and more supertalls than 99.9 percent of cities on earth. When things get better and the good times roll in again Chicago will go back to building supertalls and it won't be that crap pile by the post office. Believe it!

They were canceling supertalls in Chicago, when Bush Sir was president. So you can't really blame the last Bush. When there's a world wide Union for construction workers, skyscrapers will be hard for every country to building

I agree with you,Chicago still has more supertalls than other cities!
NYC has only one supertall(It's ESB)( by roof height),but Chicago has 4!
Shanghai has 2 by now,Although Dubai has so many supertalls, but most of
them are cheap and not so beautiful except Burj khalifa.

The feds would have bailed out the developers of Waldorf and Waterview to make sure they would hae been built if they didn't have to pay for war?

If you want to convince yourself that it was anything oter then the collapse of the mortgage backed securities markets, risky sub prime loans, and relaxed regulations on leveraging in order to throw around haphazard half baked mud pies then you are happy to your delusions I guess.

They still count though. I don't like them anymore then you, but they still count.

And don't worry. In five years, NYC will have something like 10 supertalls (regardless of measurement). And Chicago will still have 4.

But, I honestly do hope this thing can come through. It would revive Chicago's dead supertall-building spirit!

Even with 6 supertalls only Chicago will still look better than ny.

How come 10 supertalls in 5 years?
ESB,1WTC,2WTC,3WTC,15 penn plaza,Tower verre,one 57.
so only 7 supertalls NYC will has in 5 years, perhaps some of them
cant get built。

1, 2, 3 WTC (you may or may not count 4 as it is 298 meters)
ESB
One57, Verre, The Drake, 225 West 57th
Manhattan West 1
15 Penn Plaza
Possibly the South Tower of Hudson Yards

To be honest, I didn't really count, and just said 10 as it was a good round number. But it is indeed possible.

ah~just ten,I think some of them can‘t get built in 5 years!at least 10 years I think. Some are just proposal ,such as Verre, the Drake(I never heard this building.)
But if these towers all get built,NYC will become my favourite supertallcity.

Could you please stop talking about other projects in here? This thread is about the Old Post Office proposal, nothing else.

If you feel like discussing other Chicago proposals, there's a Chicago forum for it:

by searching for the average height of the ten tallest buildings, which kinda is a good way to find out what impact a skyline has, Chicago is still third place and with a 600m building it surely would get second place again.
