Has the name been changed yet. I think this tower would be better if the name was better.

Plan Commission OKs Post Office redevelopment

Quote:
The first phase of the West Loop plan calls for 2,155 rental units, 300,000 square feet of retail space and a two-level, 1,300-space automated parking garage at the Post Office.

Also part of that phase would be a glass-sheathed, 1,000-foot tower with 1,000 rental units, a 321-room hotel and 400,000 square feet of office space. Another 500,000 square feet of retail space are planned for the tower’s curving base along the Chicago River.

Along with other structures that would have retail space and parking, the first phase would cost about $1.5 billion, said Joseph Antunovich, president of the architectural firm involved in the project. That phase could be completed in seven to 10 years, with the entire project perhaps taking two decades, Antunovich said.

Phase two would include another 170-story structure that would rise 2,000 feet with antennas and become the tallest building in the United States, Antunovich said. Phase three would be another 1,000-foot tower, with apartments, a hotel and office space.

The cost for the entire project could run as high as $4 billion, Antunovich added.

I hope they come with something better than an XXL version of the Willis tower though.

i thought this would be how the tower actually was. No "spires" only antenna masts. Still, at 2,000 ft with Willis Tower esque antennas the FAA might be a bit rowdy. We'll see how things pan out.
3 supertalls for Chicago. Hopefully it doesn't fall through.

Not sure if you guys have noticed, but from the last article desertpunk posted it seems eventual start of construction of this tower is 7 to 10 years away by the current schedule.

yes, but there's a supertall in phase one which will begin sooner, if it happens.

Wow, awesome to see this approved. It's still a long way in the future but it has moved a step closer to (possible) construction

Phase 1 building is 1000 feet. I took a trip down to Chicago today and noticed that the portion of the city it is planning to be built on is vacant in terms of high rises. This building will stand out, and if designed properly, will become an excellent addition to the skyline.

Will New Plan for Old Post Office Amount to Anything?

It's easy to be cynical...and Bill Davies' track record doesn't help.

Yeah. Believing in this project success is very naive considering who's behind it. I guess in a year or two we will know for certain if he was just trolling if he won't start that 300m tower construction.

Well, it just got approved, so no way for us to know what'll happen but considering how staled this proposal used to be I'm skeptical, just like you. The recent revival of this project might have been a revival ........ or it might have just been just a trolling move by him and until I see ground breaking I will remain skeptical

The only gripe and it's a small one..

What makes the Chicago Skyline breathtaking to me is the spacing between its supertalls. They are close but not too close if you can understand what I'm saying. The location of this being so close to the Sears/ Willis will ruin that for me.

I gotta say I love that skywalk from what will be the parking garage into the western face of the Old Post Office. Five levels of skywalk! That would be a site going down Canal Street especially at night.

For some reason, my last post was deleted. Hmm. And I was so positive and optimist about the chances for this brilliant project too. Now, my undying love for the city of Chicago and my effusive praise of this project will not be read. And I had been hoping to massively increase my number of "likes". Especially from our many New York City members....

I read your deleted post (wasn't even that off-topic), and I agree on many points. But never underestimate Chicago's will to build an übertall tower, especially when it's going to beat New York.
