I didn't say it would begin construction in two years. All I said is let's see how the economy's doing in two years, and if it's doing well then I think this will make it.

I think that´s exactly what he meant.

Considering the U.S. economy has no recovered fully, it probably wouldn´t make a lot of financial sense to build something like this right now. They´ll probably wait a little longer to see how things go.

A building like this is overdue in Chicago.

The supertall probably needs the office market to recover quite a bit more in Chicago which AFAIK still has a significant vacancy rate. The way the economy is transforming itself in the last decade or so, a lot of the office demand will be concentrated in NYC (financial services/media), Houston (energy), San Francisco (tech) and Boston/Cambridge (biotech/tech). Chicago needs to come up with a major office anchor or a significant chunk of luxury condo demand for the tallest tower in this development to be underwritten. You never know, it could happen sooner than we think. I, for one, sure hope so.

Spire Developer Looks to Begin Anew

Garrett Kelleher, Irish developer of the bankrupted Chicago Spire, is expressing confidence that he can pay off his creditors and jumpstart the project again. Kelleher is reportedly in talks with investors to secure funding for the 2,000-foot (610-meter) condominium tower.

"Garrett Kelleher is very committed to the Chicago Spire," his lawyer, Thomas Murphy, told Chicago Real Estate Daily. "We're coming out of the perfect storm, and Garrett thinks this is the perfect product."

If completed, the spire would earn the title of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. That title, which is currently still held by the Willis Tower in Chicago, will soon be awarded to the One World Trade Center in New York, upon its completion, as decided by the CTBUH earlier this week.

i would love a 600m tower in chicago, but something in the middle of the skyline that is boxy and actually suits the city style, the chicago spire makes the opposite of that...
