Oh please. This is China. Nothing is going to stop them. Worst that could happen is a delay of a few years.

If the gate is an indication, we are in for quite a while.

Yes, exactly. China is moving away from being the "workshop" of the world to a services, R&D and high-tech based economy. This development is spearheaded by the advanced coastal cities (and a few big inland ones) creating the need for a massive amount of office space.

There is a massive amount of office space coming to the market in Suzhou right now, so they will delay this building a little bit - after all a 729m building is not exactly the most cost-effective way of providing space. But I'm not worried about it being build - they stil plan to finish it by 2021.

You are confused.
These towers are going up as a result of ultra cheap govt loans to keep the GDP high, not as a result of major demand.

I'd love to see this built. Suzhou is one of China's best cities. The Kyoto of China.

First of all, I think that is a rather dubious conclusion. Secondly, although this was in the construction forums, there was never much progress to speak of- just some basic groundworks. I don't even think that piling was fully completed. China has had its fair share of cancelled projects, and I'm afraid this seems likely to join the list.

It is not a conclusion at all; just my opinion on the matter, based on observations of similar projects in the past. No more. To make an actual forecast of what might happen you probably need a Phd in economics, years of experience and what not. All I know is, if there is a country that can pull this tower off, it is China.

I was looking to this thread hoping to see some fresh pics and what a disappointment

I hope it's not going to status "on hold"

This was one of the towers I had the greatest hopes for.

Not any more.

There seems to be a lack of updates coming out of China these days (year 2015 onwards).. Where is Z0rg???

And speaking of Z0rg: An update of his Supertall list is much anticipated....

Back to reality in Suzhou: I'll be glad if the pants are taken into use at long last

I don't hope for much more. But I'm ready for a pleasant surprise.

Zhongnan

I drove past the site on Sunday and can definitely say nothing has happened. Although it has been Chinese new year and the majority of those who work in construction are Migrant workers so they go to their hometowns for 3 or more weeks. The first working day back was yesterday so if anything is going to start it should be soon. However since I moved out of the building overlooking the site in September last year nothing seems to have happened. They cleared all the construction materials out one day, maybe to let the foundations to set in for a while.

I think we have reached the peak of china's tower boom and are now in the era of lower construction, fewer towers, less height etc, it was inevitable tho, but not a bad thing, they will still build towers at an reasonable rate, just much slower, like a more developed economy
