Oh boy...

It's fucked up eitherway, we're lucky this kind and scale of gun massacre doesn't happen more often in countries like ours. If someone let loose with an assault rifle in a busy shopping street in a country like ours they could realistically kill dozens before they were pinned down or disabled by an armed response.

The circumstances surrounding this massacre, people literally trapped on a small island while this guy rampaged around it for an hour, are awful.

also 84 were killed in the shooting spree itself, which is mind-boggling considering this was carried out by one individual alone. highest spree killer death toll ever? i remember reading about a south korean maniac in the early 80s killing fifty something people alone.

horrible.

So, Is there a link between the shooting and the bombing? I thought I heard last night the bombing had been attributed/'claimed' by a radical islamist group?

EDIT: No Andrew, no one has claimed responsibility.

Answered my own question by 'reading' a 'news report' on the BBC News 'website'.

I think a band of Islamic nutters did 'claim' the attack, but this is usual when there's a terrorist atrocity... various groups who had nothing to do with it claim responsibility to raise their profile.

yea i'm not sure that list is conclusive. i was looking for westroads - not there either.

the wikipedia shooting spree entry also looks incomplete, with the table of incidents tastefully entitled "List of High Scores". how nice.

I just tried to edit the article to include that.

In the edit box is a footnote -

<!-- PLEASE READ THE DEFINITION OF SPREE KILLER AT THE TOP OF THE ARTICLE BEFORE ADDING A KILLING HERE. Dunblane is a mass murder in a single location. Definition of a spree killing = "killings at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders..............-->

I can't begin to imagine what this is doing to the massed psyche of such a small, ordered and conservative nation.

It must seem shattering.

Having said all this though, much of Scandinavia, despite it's worldwide reputation for cool orderliness, does have some intensely dark elements (Hell's Angels fighting vicious turf wars, Black Metalers burning ancient churches to the ground, Neo-Nazi Black Metalers murdering each other) which I'm sure are inevitable symptoms of nations that exercise such a powerful control over the collective unconscious - i.e. in a nation where 95% is light, the 5% of darkness is that much darker, more potentially destructive - and, worst of all, armed to the teeth.

One of the things that's so sinister is the island gunman's MO: because he was dressed as a policeman he seems to have at first beckoned people over and then shot them, then, as panic spread outwards from the initial incident he moved on to other parts of the island, where he would continue to act as if he was helping people who were confused and panicking, beckon them over with the offer of protection and shoot them, and so on and so on and so on...

As long as people were only partially aware of what was going on and as long as he was dressed as a policeman he basically had no end of potential victims seeking help from a figure of authority.

What a loathsome scumbag.

Or more accurately in this case, Christian fundamentalism's war against freedom continues.

When we think of religious extremism, we've got to be careful not to assume that only Islam is capable of producing evil nutcases committed to mass murder.

There are plenty of fundamentalist Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs in this country who are just as insane. This one in particular.

I agree. I just saw the aerial shots of the island on the news and it really hammered home both how trapped and vulnerable everybody on the island would have been and how the carefree atmosphere of a camping trip was horrifying destroyed in the blinking of an eye.

I have nothing but contempt for this narcissistic, self-regarding and deluded excuse for a human who I'm sure believes he is some kind of warrior doing the 'good work' as if he's somehow earned the right.

It's genuinely upsetting.

I know it's conjecture, but I'd have thought that a right-wing fanatic would target minorities like David Copeland did... Or maybe he blames the Labour party in Norway for 'letting them in'?

I guess Timothy McVeigh's target was equally odd...

Perhaps his plan was to eliminate the next generation of 'leftists' while they were all gathered up in one place. There were upto 500 people on the island, I hope the toll doesn't rise any more.

Wasnt McVeighs only objective to destroy the US government, he wasnt against minorities so much, he believed the US government was tyrranical and oppressing him. So the Federal building was a pretty predictable taget.
