Nigeria warns against coup attempt in Guinea

Any attempt to truncate the democratic process in any ECOWAS country will not be welcomed, the Federal Government warned on Wednesday in Abuja.
A press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Nigerian Government "believes that democracy and good governance, as enshrined in the ECOWAS Protocol, are the lasting panacea for the sub-region's development."
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the statement was in reaction to Tuesday's attempted assassination of Guinea's President Alpha Conde "reportedly by some disgruntled soldiers."
"The federal government received the news of the attempted assassination with shock and disbelief.
"While it condemns the attack, it is however happy that Conde was unharmed and has since addressed the Guinean nation," the ministry said in the statement.
It added that the Nigerian Government strongly believes in the democratic process.
"Federal government urges all member-states of the West African sub-region to uphold the process in the interest of peace and economic development of their people.
"Any attempt to truncate the democratic process in any ECOWAS country will therefore not be welcomed,'' the ministry said.
While expressing support for Conde as the democratically-elected Guinean President, the Federal Government urged the people of Guinea to remain calm and to support him.
It urged the Guinean government to exercise restraint and continue with its democratic agenda in line with the wishes of the people of Guinea.
"This is in order to ensure an early return of normalcy to the country,'' the statement said.
