Air China Cargo To Double Shanghai-Narita Flights
24 December 2010

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Air China Cargo Co. plans to double the number of cargo flights between Shanghai and Narita airport to four per week starting in January.

The airline began operating the route in late October and currently flies between the two destinations every Tuesday and Sunday with Boeing 747-400 planes capable of carrying 110 tons of cargo. It has decided to begin flying on Thursdays and Fridays as well starting Jan. 13 in response to robust demand for cargo between the two cities. It may also add more flights if landing rights to Narita can be secured.

Flights from Shanghai to Narita have been operating at around 90% of capacity, with return flights at around 70% of capacity.

Air China Cargo also operates six cargo flights per week between Kansai International Airport and Shanghai and Beijing.

Japanese air carriers, meanwhile, are showing no interest in adding cargo flights, with Japan Airlines Corp. having effectively exited the cargo business at the end of October as it undergoes corporate restructuring and All Nippon Airways Co. (9202) giving priority to the profitability of operations based out of its Okinawa hub.

Consequently, the Chinese air carrier is capturing more of the air cargo market between China and Japan.

Shandong Air to buy 15 Boeing aircraft worth $1.2 bln

SHANGHAI, Dec 24 (Reuters) - China's Shandong Airlines Co Ltd said on Friday that it plans to buy 15 Boeing Co B737-800 aircraft worth up to $1.2 billion.

The purchases would be funded by business revenue and bank loans, with the aircraft to be delivered between 2014 and 2015, Shandong Airlines said in a statement to the stock exchange.

The carrier said the aircraft had a catalogue price of $75 million to $80 million each.

China Eastern says to buy 50 Airbus A320 aircraft

HONG KONG, Dec 30 (Reuters) - China Eastern Airlines , the country's third most valuable airline, agreed to buy 50 Airbus A320 aircraft to meet rising demand and lift its competitiveness in the air transportation market.

The new aircraft are valued at $3.224 billion based on the catalogue price in 2005, though they will be sold to the company with significant price concessions granted by Airbus, China Eastern said on Thursday.

"The purchase of the aircraft will further enhance the route coverage of the company and increase the economical benefit of the company," China Eastern said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Increasing leisure and business travel in China and the international market has helped regional airlines, such as China Eastern to report bumper quarterly profits this year.

That fuelled a buying spree among airlines in the region, including its rivals Air China , China Southern Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd .

Shanghai-based China Eastern said the new orders will increase its available tonne kilometres (ATKs), a measure of capacity in the airline industry, by 14.39 percent based on its ATKs at the end of 2009.

The combined ATKS of the company and Shanghai Airlines Co Ltd, its wholly owned unit, will rise by 11.24 percent, it added.

The aircraft are expected to be delivered to the company in stages from 2012 to 2015, China Eastern said.

It will fund the purchase by bank loans from commercial banks, it added.

Last month Airbus said it won orders from China for 102 jetliners valued at $14 billion and the deals were signed in front of French President Nicolas Sarkozy and visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao in Paris.

The deal signed in November included 50 A320 but it is unclear whether China Eastern's announcement on Thursday is part of the package."

China Eastern could not be reached for comment.

Spring Airlines to launch four chartered flights between Takamatsu and Shanghai next year
31 December 2010
Mainichi Daily News

TAKAMATSU -- Spring Airlines, a Shanghai-based low-cost carrier, intends to launch four chartered round-trip flights between Takamatsu and Shanghai a week, local government officials said.

Kagawa Gov. Keizo Hamada and Spring Airlines Chairman Wang Zhenghua signed an agreement on the flights in Shanghai on Dec. 30. The airline will apply with the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry for permission to launch the flights.

"The airline has recognized Takamatsu's position as the premiere airport in Shikoku," Vice Gov. Takayuki Takagi told a news conference.

The company and the prefectural government are also moving towards upgrading the chartered flights to regular flights in the future.

If inaugurated, the route will be the second in Japan for Spring Airlines after an Ibaraki-Shanghai route.

Although the lowest fares of the Ibaraki-Shanghai route -- a mere 4,000 yen -- have drawn attention from the public, Spring Airlines has not yet decided on the fare of the Takamatsu-Shanghai flights or the flight schedule.

Spring Airlines also says it is negotiating with the governments of Saga and Kumamoto over the possibility of launching flights in those prefectures.

Beijing Capital International: Government Extends Airport Fees
6 January 2011

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Beijing Capital International Airport Co. (0694.HK), the operator of the Chinese capital's international airport, said Wednesday the government has extended its right to collect airport fees through 2015.

The firm didn't give details on the fees it can collect during the period.

The Hong Kong-listed company said last month it shelved a plan to issue up to CNY5 billion worth of new H shares to its parent as some of its H-share holders were waiting for clarity on the airport fees it will be allowed to charge after the current arrangement expired at the end of 2010.

China removes airport construction fees on feeder line flights
4 January 2011

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) – China has cancelled airport construction fees on feeder line flights as of January 1, 2011.

The exemption of airport construction fees on feeder line flights will help boost the aviation market in the country's developing areas and it also implies that airport construction fees in other areas will continue to be levied.

The news will give a certain boost to airline and airport stocks.

The General Civil Aviation Administration of China announced last Friday that as of January 1, 2011, the airport construction fees will be exempted on feeder line flights particularly in economically less developed areas, which are mainly in the country's central and western parts, and ethnic minority, border and poverty-stricken regions.

The exemption policy will be mainly given to small airports and short and medium-distance flights.

China Eastern Airline (CEA.NYSE; 00670.HK; 600115.SH) opened one percent higher Monday after gaining 2.02 percent in the last trading day on the A-share market, and China Southern Airline (ZNH.NYSE; 01055.HK; 600029.SH), opened one percent higher after closing 2.01 percent last Friday.

#HU | Hainan Airlines/Grand China Air

Hainan is definitely making a big splash now that it's the newest five-star airline by Skytrax.

Definitely be interested to see which air alliance the airline will eventually join.

China Southern Airlines: See 2010 Net Profit 15 Times Bigger Than 2009
11 January 2011

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--China Southern Airlines Co. (ZNH) said Tuesday it expects its 2010 net profit rose 15 times from a year earlier, boosted by increased demand for air travel and a foreign-exchange gain.

The Guangzhou-based company didn't give a figure for its expected earnings. It reported a net profit of CNY358 million in 2009, based on Chinese accounting standards.

GRAND CHINA AIRLINES PLANS US$1.5BLN HONG KONG IPO

BEIJING, Jan 7 Asia Pulse - Grand China Airlines, the flagship of the country's fourth-largest airline company HNA Group, plans to raise 10 billion yuan (US$1.50 billion) in private placement and then float shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange this year.

The move is part of the parent company's plan to increase its presence in the regional air market, industry insiders said.

HNA Group originally tried to list Grand China in 2006, but this time it aims to raise 10 billion yuan in a private placement first, according to the Economy & Nation Weekly.

The funds will be used to develop Grand China into a national carrier by combining its operations with those of other regional carriers, including Chongqing-based West Air and Tianjin-based Tianjin Air, formerly known as Grand China Express, a HNA-controlled business. The two companies are valued about 5 billion yuan ($759 million) each.

Industry analysts said the timing is ripe for the carrier to go public.

"Last year, the airline industry witnessed historic growth in terms of market growth and profits," said Li Lei, an analyst at Citic China Securities (SSE:600030). He said the growth was at least 200 per cent, with profits of between 20 and 30 billion yuan.

The speculation about the airline's public listing in Hong Kong came as a result of the group's restructuring during the past year to optimize the company's portfolio.

Analysts believe that Grand China's listing will provide the company with more resources to expand its regional flight market.

"HNA Group has a long tradition of growing up with the support of the capital market. Now, facing a bottleneck in its development, the Hong Kong listing will provide the company with more capital to enhance its domestic regional flight market," said Li Xiaojin, a professor with the Civil Aviation University of China.

HNA Group owns 24.07 per cent of Grand China and 7.21 per cent of the Shanghai-listed Hainan Airlines (SSE:600221). With 19.7 billion yuan in revenue and 220 million in net profit in 2009, Grand China Airline owns 41.6 per cent of Hainan Airlines and gains its 90 per cent revenue from it, said the weekly.

The controlling shareholder of Grand China Airlines is the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the Hainan provincial government.

It's sort of ridiculous for Skytrax to give Hainan a 5 star rating. I haven't personally travelled with Hainan, but I have heard many good stories and ratings. Still, that doesn't mean they can just get 5 stars! This means Skytrax is rating it at par with CX, SQ, etc. Is Hainan really better than ANA, Swiss, and Lufthansa? I personally doubt it, but again, I haven't actually taken them either.

Not that Skytrax is too credible anyway, but this just makes them look even more foolish. There needs to be another review agency that conducts reasonable, realistic reviews of airlines. I would say Skytrax ratings are really out of touch, and many need to be updated and re-reviewed.
