14 February 2011

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Passenger traffic at Beijing's international airport rose 14% in January from a year earlier, boosted by China's growing demand for air travel, according to data issued Monday by airport operator Beijing Capital International Airport Co. (0694.HK).

The airport operator said in a statement Beijing airport handled 6.18 million passengers in January, while aircraft movements during the month rose 7.6% to 44,050. It didn't provide year-earlier figures for comparison.

Beijing Capital is China's busiest airport in terms of passenger throughput. It overtook major airports such as Chicago's O'Hare and Paris's Charles de Gaulle in 2009 to become the world's third-busiest airport by passenger traffic, up from eighth place in 2008.

China air passenger growth to lead global market - IATA

HONG KONG, Feb 16 (Reuters) - The number of international air passengers from mainland China will rise by an average of 10.8 percent per year through to 2014, making it the world's fastest-growing market, industry association IATA forecast.

Hong Kong would be the world's fastest-growing air cargo market, with growth seen at an average of 12.2 percent per year in the same period, said International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Giovanni Bisignani.

"Asia is the most profitable region in the world," he told reporters ahead of an industry forum in Hong Kong on Wednesday. "Of the 800 million new passengers who will fly by 2014, 360 million will be in Asia-Pacific and 214 million of those in China," he added.

IATA forecast the number of Chinese international passengers to rise to 82.1 million by 2014 from 49.2 million in 2009, making it the eighth largest market in the world, up from the ninth place in 2009.

Airlines worldwide were expected to report a combined profit of $15.1 billion in 2010, including $7.7 billion from Asia-Pacific carriers, IATA said, adding that it expected the region's airlines to earn a total of $4.6 billion 2011, compared with the world's total of $9.1 billion.

All of China's top three airlines, Air China Ltd, China Southern Airlines Co Ltd and China Eastern Airlines Corp Ltd, as well as Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd have forecast strong profit growth of between two and 15 times for 2010.

China has been investing heavily in transport infrastructure. It has said it will plough about 30 billion yuan ($4.56 billion) over the next five years into new airport projects in the western region of Xinjiang alone.

China's air cargo volume would rise 11.7 percent per year to 3.8 million tonnes in 2014 from 2.1 million tonnes in 2009, it said. The increase would just trail that of Hong Kong, whose air cargo volume should grow to 5.3 million tonnes in 2014 from 3 million in 2009.

Bisignani urged Hong Kong to build a third runway for its international airport. "A third runway is needed and the time to start planning is now."

Hainan Airlines expects to report sixfold earnings increase for 2010
Created 2011-02-09 16:38
http://atwonline.com/airline-finance...ease-2010-0209

Hainan Airlines said it expects to report 2010 net income of more than CNY2.01 billion ($306 million), a sixfold increase over a CNY335 million net profit reported for 2009 (ATW Daily News, April 26, 2010 [2]).

The Haikou-based carrier credited "rapid growth of market demand stimulated by the global economic recovery and robust domestic economic growth," favorable government policy that aims to build Hainan as a vacation destination and increase operating efficiency.

Owing in large part to surging domestic growth, Chinese carriers earned a collective net profit of CNY35.1 billion ($5.28 billion) in 2010, according to CAAC (ATW Daily News, Jan. 12 [3]).

Government slams graft in China airport building boom

BEIJING, Feb 14 (Reuters) - China's airport building boom over the past five years has caused a litany of graft and environmental problems, but has managed to boost local economies, the government's spending watchdog said on Monday.

Ten airport projects across the country cost taxpayers some 159 million yuan ($24.12 million) in false accounting and tax avoidance, while one northeastern airport cost double the amount it should have due to inflated contracts, the audit office said.

A total of 23 airports spent 1.94 billion yuan on projects that were not open to public tenders as they were supposed to have been, the audit office said, implying contracts were open to abuse.

"Relevant government departments are investigating further in accordance with the law and will ... find out who is responsible and hold them accountable," it said in a statement on its website ( www.audit.gov.cn ).

Other new airports were guilty of opening before final environmental impact studies had been completed, and some simply dumped their untreated waste water in nearby rivers and fields, the body added, saying this issue was now being addressed.

China has spent more than 68 billion yuan over the past five years building or expanding a total of 53 airports, and despite the problems encountered the process has been worth it, the watchdog said.

"Airport building has, to a definite degree, driven regional economic development and improved the local investment environment," it said, adding that subsidies to airports in remote areas boosted growth and created almost 60,000 jobs.

Air travel is developing rapidly in China amid a booming economy.

China has big plans for its airport network, especially in poorer and more remote regions in the far west, though many of these stylish new airports have struggled to attract customers and handle just a few flights a week, or none at all.

The country's massive infrastructure spending has provided officials with plenty of opportunity for graft.

Over the weekend state media announced the railways minister had been put under investigation for "serious disciplinary violations", which usually refers to corruption and abuses of power that can lead to criminal charges.
