Sichuan Airlines to fly between Chengdu and Melbourne

CHENGDU, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Sichuan Airlines will offer direct flights between the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu and Melbourne of Australia starting from Feb. 28.

It will be the first non-stop flights connecting western China with Australia, the airline said in a statement on Monday.

The air carrier is scheduled to fly on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. A one-way trip is about 4,800 nautical miles and takes about 10 and a half hours, it said.

The airline estimates it will carry more than 70,000 passengers between the two cities annually as Australia witnesses a tourism boom from Chinese travelers.

China has overtaken the UK to become Australia's second biggest market in tourism behind New Zealand, according to a Tourism Research Australia survey released in December.

China Southern Airlines flys-high in Australia

SYDNEY, Jan, 30 (Xinhua) -- China Southern Airlines' (CSA) first scheduled Cairns flight arrived in the far north Wednesday, cementing its position as Australia's key connection into China.

With services three times a week running throughout February to cater for high season demand, CSA will operate 41 weekly services to five Australian ports throughout the summer peak, continuing its rapid expansion down under.

In 2010, China Southern flew just 14 times a week to only two Australian destinations.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2013 and Asia's largest airline has ambitions to move beyond 50 flights a week.

China Southern Regional General Manager Australia/New Zealand, Henry He said, "We're on track to offer 55 scheduled weekly flights to Australia and New Zealand by the end of 2015."

The Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines has operated into Australia for more than 12 years now.

With twice daily flights between Sydney and Guangzhou, twice daily from Melbourne and three times a week from Perth. Between January 29 and February 28, Brisbane flights increase to daily to connect with thrice-weekly flights from Cairns, China Southern has become Australia's leading connection into the Middle Kingdom.

He said the first air bridge between Cairns and the airline's modern hub in Guangzhou was a unique connection.

"This is a very proud day for China Southern Airlines as our inaugural scheduled service to Cairns arrives and we open up a new direct link between far north Queensland and southern China," He said.

"We know Chinese tourists want to travel to great Australian destinations like Cairns and are pleased to be able to offer a way to do this during the summer travel peak." He added.

The first scheduled Cairns flight was greeted by Cairns Airport representatives including Cairns Mayor Bob Manning; Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer Rob Giason; and a collection of some of Queensland's more serpentine Year of the Snake.

China Southern has also been chartered by Chinese tour operators for seven Guangzhou-to-Cairns services and two Guangzhou- to-Adelaide services during the Chinese New Year festivities.

China Southern will operate thrice-weekly flights between Guangzhou and Cairns (via Brisbane), which will increase to daily services during the same period, until February 28, 2013.

CSA, with a growing reputation as the largest carrier in China and Asia (and the third largest in the world), spirited 385,706 passengers to Australia last year, a more than 56 per cent increase on the 246,000 passengers the airline flew to Australia in 2011.

Due to growing demand CSA also offers daily direct services from Auckland to Guangzhou. China Southern operates the largest airline fleet in Asia and with more than 86 million passengers carried in 2012. It is the third largest carrier in the world.

Air China launches Beijing-Geneva nonstop service

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Air China has announced it will offer nonstop flights between Beijing and Geneva four times a week from May 7 this year, in a latest move to expand its network in Europe.

The flight, operated with an Airbus A330-200, is scheduled to leave Beijing at 1:30 p.m. (Beijing time) and arrive at 6:25 p.m. (Geneva time) on the same day. The return flight is expected to take off from Geneva at 8:25 p.m. and arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport at 12:55 p.m. the next day.

The new service will bring the number of European destinations served by Air China, which includes cities such as Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, London, Paris, Stockholm, Milan, Rome and Madrid, to 12, said the airline's president, Cai Jianjiang.

The flight numbers of the Beijing-Geneva service will be CA861/862.

China's jumbo air freighter test flight a success: Xinhua
Sat, Jan 26, 2013

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has conducted a successful test flight of its first domestically developed jumbo air freighter, the official state news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday.

The Yun-20, or Transport-20, is designed for long-distance air transport of both cargo and passengers, Xinhua reported.

"The successful maiden flight of Yun-20 is significant in promoting China's economic and national defense build-up as well as bettering its emergency handling such as disaster relief and humanitarian aid," Xinhua said, adding that further test flights are scheduled.

China is determined to reduce dependency on foreign firms such as Boeing , Airbus , General Electric and Rolls Royce Plc for the country's soaring demand for planes and engines.

Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the country's dominant military and commercial aviation contractor, has lobbied for Beijing to back a multi-billion dollar plan to build a high-performance engine.

Meanwhile a host of design flaws has delayed approval by the Civil Aviation Administration of China for the country's homegrown 90-seat ARJ21 regional passenger jet.

At last November's China Airshow, China unveiled 50 new orders for its COMAC C919 passenger jet which is designed to challenge Airbus and Boeing in the largest segment of the $100 billion annual jetliner market.

The orders for the 150-seat jet boosted the official tally to 380, reaching the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China's declared breakeven point of 300-400 orders.

However, analysts say it will be some time before the aircraft, due to make its maiden flight in 2014, proves both its technical worth and its financial viability.

Seems like a great boost for China Southern, considering they have only had 10 weekly services to Australia in 2009.

Anyone know of possibilities that China Southern will go to 3 daily to SYD? I heard that their Sydney flights are very profitable.

Passenger plane makes emergency landing in NE China

HARBIN, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- A passenger plane was forced to make an emergency landing Monday at an airport in northeast China shortly after it took off, as the housing on its left engine fell off, according to a statement from a local airline company.

China Southern Airlines flight CZ 3624, which was en route from Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang province, to the southern city of Guangzhou, made a successful emergency landing at 9:52 a.m. after it took off at 8:29 a.m., said a statement issued by the company's Heilongjiang office.

The office then sent another plane, which took off at 11:03 a.m. to help transport the stranded passengers, it said.

Although the company has refused to reveal what type of aircraft was involved, local media have reported that it was an Airbus A320.

An investigation into the cause of the incident is under way.

Plane emergency-lands after fake bomb call

NANCHANG, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- A domestic passenger plane made an emergency landing in the early hours of Thursday after airport sources received a telephone call which claimed there were explosives on board.

The airport of Hefei, capital of eastern Anhui Province, received the warning via telephone at around midnight on Wednesday, shortly after flight ZH9786 bound for Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, departed from the airport.

The plane landed in the airport of Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province. A strict examination of the aircraft did not find any explosives.

Police are investigating the case.
