China Eastern Airlines Sees Profits Plunge Nearly 100% In First Half

It’s going to be a rough day for investors in China Eastern Airlines stock. Good thing for the ADR holders in the U.S. that the market here is closed on Monday. The stock opened 0.4% lower in Shanghai on Monday but rose by the same amount in Hong Kong. Its ADRs settled 2.5% lower on Friday.

Recent earnings numbers could hit the stock if investors have not already priced in a rough first half. The company is trading at nearly 14 times trailing earnings, right around the same as Lufthansa in Frankfurt and much more expensive than Delta Airlines, which is trading at around three times.

China Eastern posted a whopping 97.7% plunge in net profit in the first half of 2014. Its net profit of 14 million yuan (a relatively paltry $2.3 million) was made on revenue of 42.59 billion yuan in the first six months, up 2.68% from the same period of last year, according to a statement the airline filed to the Shanghai Stock Exchange this weekend.

The airline attributed the lackluster performance to “geopolitical instability, fewer high-end business travelers and more convenient high-speed railway services.”

China expected to need 6,020 new aircraft in 20 years: Boeing

BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Air carriers in China are expected to receive delivery of 6,020 new airplanes over the next 20 years, nearly 45 percent of the total demand in the Asia-Pacific region, according to an annual market outlook released by Boeing Co. on Thursday.

The market value for the predicted purchases will amount to approximately 870 billion U.S. dollars, it said.

New business models like low-cost carriers, airplane-leasing companies, a new generation of fuel-efficient airplanes and evolving consumer needs are driving demand for more direct flights to more destinations, said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Tourism in China and intra-Asia travel support a strong demand for single-aisle airplanes, with total deliveries to reach 4,340 through 2033, the report said.

Chinese airlines with large global networks continue to look for opportunities to expand, as international flying increases from second-tier cities apart from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Growth in the long-haul segment is expected to result in demand for an additional 1,480 new fuel-efficient widebodies, such as the Boeing-777, 787 Dreamliner and 747-8 Intercontinental, it said.

Globally, Boeing projects investments of 5.2 trillion U.S. dollars for 36,770 new commercial airplanes to be delivered during the next 20 years. China accounts for more than 16 percent of the total demand in terms of both new deliveries and market value.

Currently, more than 50 percent of all commercial jetliners operating in China are Boeing airplanes, Boeing said.

Chinese needs 98,000 new pilots in next 20 years

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- China will need 98,000 more pilots and 101,000 maintenance technicians in the next 20 years, according to latest estimates of Boeing.

For the whole Asia Pacific region, the demand for pilots and technicians over the same period is forecast to be 216,000 and 224,000, respectively, according the 2014 Boeing Pilot and Technician Outlook.

From now to 2033, the Asia Pacific region will account for 39 percent of the world's total demand for new commercial airline technicians, more than Europe and North America combined, it said.

"The Asia Pacific region is seeing tremendous economic growth and is set to become the largest air travel market in the world," said Bob Bellitto, director of Customer Group, Boeing Flight Services.

A booming market means more jobs and career opportunities for those interested in becoming commercial airline pilots and maintenance technicians over the next two decades, Bellitto added.

The Asia Pacific region also leads the world's demand for new commercial airplane deliveries over the next 20 years, with 13,460 new aircraft needed by 2033, according to Boeing.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) – China Southern Airlines (ZNH.NYSE; 01055.HK; 600029.SH), the country's largest airline by fleet size, has decided to open a new route in December from Guangzhou to San Francisco with a stopover in Wuhan.

The round-trip flights for Guangzhou-Wuhan-San Francisco route will be the fourth passenger air line of China Southern Airlines from Guangzhou to North America and Boeing 787 Dreamliner will carry the flights under flight number CZ659/660.

Statistics show that in 2013, 17 Chinese and US airlines transferred 4.4 million passengers and about 150,000 metric tons (tonnes) of cargo between the two countries.

A brand-new Xiamen Airlines B787 had an incident with a jet bridge at Beijing airport. Luckily only the engine cowling seems to be damaged.

China Eastern Airlines to open New Zealand direct flights

WELLINGTON, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines is to start a daily direct service between Auckland and Shanghai over the southern summer, the airline and Auckland Airport said Tuesday.

Starting on Dec. 9, the service will initially operate four flights per week, rising to seven flights a week from January to March 28 next year, subject to regulatory approval.

The service would add an extra 47,000 seats on the route, contributing an estimated 54 million NZ dollars (42.05 million U.S. dollars) to the New Zealand economy over the peak New Zealand period, Charles Spillane, Auckland Airport acting general manager aeronautical commercial, said in a statement.

"When we look at the year ending June 2014, we saw almost 36, 000 visitors arriving from Shanghai, an increase of 20 percent when compared to the same period the year before," said Spillane.

The service would compete with Air New Zealand, which offers the only other direct service on the Auckland-Shanghai route.

Kathy Zhang, China Eastern Airlines general manager Oceania, said the carrier had seen great demand when it operated two charter flights on the Shanghai-Auckland route during the 2014 Chinese New Year.

"That success has played a crucial role in our decision to offer this new seasonal operation. New Zealand is one of the most popular destinations for Chinese travelers and we are confident we will experience strong demand for our new service," Zhang said.

China is New Zealand's second largest tourist market after Australia.
